In all cases the microphones are connected to an external recorder. They are not connected to the camera at all. The G7X MII does not have a mic. jack so you can't connect an external mic to this camera. My apologies if my video is confusing. This is really a video on how to use an external recording set up with the camera so you can improve audio quality.

@@Daniflicks-bn1hk I bought mine on eBay from a seller in Japan. Almost freaked out when I turned it on and the menu was in Japanese. Took a little RUclips research to switch to English.

You don't hook the mic up to the camera. You hook the mic up to the recorder. Basically an external recorder setup.

@@Roger-oz2ct For daily shooting at work I like wide dr. I get a great consistent outcome and I don’t really have to do much if anything in post. I only have one C100 so I use standard in my multicam shots where I need quick turnaround. I don’t really like standard personally. If I have a personal project I like to play with clog. I love the clog look but I don’t really need it for work to get a solid outcome. It’s definitely a very different look than wide dr.

@@jz_glass I find WDR gives good results but the CLog seems to give more lifelike colors in the skin if you get exposure right. If you miss it by much it looks pretty bad. Kinda high stakes visual poker. If the EVF had waveforms, it might help, but setting and exposing zebras @ 70 and backing of 1-2 clicks usually works. Multiple faces, movement, skies….make it a bit harder. I use Canon 35mm f2.8 efs Macro with face tracking for heads; Tokina 11-16 for ultra wide; Sigma 18-35 for when I’m behind the camera and have planned shots where I can focus; and the Canon 18-135 efs for convenience or when a long lens is needed and the scene has decent lighting.

Yeah I’m really bummed. I love the Canon look. Not much out there in the point and shoot arena with good autofocus. I re-purchased the markII. I shot a lot of wrestling with it but I don’t think it has the distance for field sports.

There is nothing like the mark 11. Mine is being repaired and I shot a camping trip with the Sony ZV-1 that we use in the office for BTS. Skin tones were weird, the photos just seemed to be missing something. This experience cemented for me that the Mark II is a special camera and my number 1 choice for documenting my life.

There is nothing like that canon look.

You can connect various microphones to your iPhone. In particular the rode smart lav. And record audio on your iPhone.

I seriously considered that camera. A little pricey but the longest zoom in it's class. I can't remember why I didn't move forward on that one. I think it was minor and I was splitting hairs. That's a great camera.

Photos are fine. Still feels like half a camera to me. But if photo is pretty much your thing it will perform well.

You can shoot manual or on auto it doesn't really matter because you are recording to an external recorder. You will need to sync the external audio with the video recording in your editing software like adobe premier pro. Not sure if I answered your question. Let me know.

The ZV1 II is a better vlogging camera due to the mic jack and the image quality has that modern Sony look. It takes great pics for a point and shoot but no flash. You can get away with no flash unless you are in low light situations a lot. Then the flash is a game changer. You can still get great photos indoors, it's just that there is a point when you just need a flash. If those situations are not frequent for you then go with the Sony for vlogging. I think in the long run you will have fewer limitations with audio for video. I use my ZV1 at work for bts photo and video. I keep an external mic on it all the time. I don't really need a flash for this scenario. For work I go with the ZV1 all day long. It's my grab and go camera. That being said for my personal life I love my G7XII. It's my every day carry and I document all of my family and outdoor adventure trips with it. The mic is plenty good for this in my opinion. I do use the flash quite a bit as we maybe in a dark restaurant or at a theme park in the evening. If my family or friends are backlit by the sun I pop the flash. Honestly I am torn between the two and at the moment if I had to pic one I lean towards the Sony because the G7X II is getting long in the tooth, however if you logged the number of photos and video hours on each camera I grab my G7X II a lot more. I think a lot of that has to do with familiarity, my muscle memory shooting manual with the G7XII is much better but I am getting quicker with the Sony with more use. I need to use the Sony more this year and I will have more confidence in choosing one over the other. Logically I like the Sony better but practically I use the Canon more.

So much! really hamstrings the ZV-1 for photos. Finding that I really use the G7X II more so for that reason.

Never noticed until you pointed it out. I don't really use the G7X II for this kind of video every day so never noticed. Mostly I use it to document my life and that involves being behind the camera on travel trips where I don't usually have stationary backgrounds. It is what it is.

Yes. The internal mic is pretty darn good.

What, my g7x mark ii audio is horrific. It has instant muffled soundz is it broken?

@@pheobepeach i realized that it's only muffled when you listen to it on camera. Try it on a computer or once you export it, it should sound better

From what I have heard in the comments the Mark III is fine for photos. I shoot a lot of video along with photos so the video aspect is as important as the photo aspect for me. If you think you might shoot some video with the camera and you want the same look I would buy a used G7X Mark II on ebay, adorama or B&H. I was lucky and found a new Mark II on ebay. I hear that a lot of people that like the vintage look shoot on fuji, however I have never shot fuji so that is not from experience. If you really want that old style look I would consider an old point and shoot film camera like the Olympus mju/Stylus. There are some old Minoltas that are very affordable.

Officially I have no idea if Canon has discontinued. The Mark II is listed on Canon USA's website but on backorder. Everywhere I looked the new ones were on backorder. I ended up finding a vendor on ebay that had a new one for sale in Japan. Bought that one. Interestingly enough the menu was in Japanese. It was impossible for me to read. I had to do a little youtube research to set it to English.

@@jz_glass Today I called Canon to clarify conflicting info. They said they haven't actually "discontinued" supporting their Powershot cameras, but they never actually repaired these cameras. It was not cost effective. Rather, the ones under warranty were replaced. For owners of Powershots out of warranty Canon simply recommended replacement. They don't make the Mark II anymore, but residual stock may still be available and sold. I cannot say why places list the Mk II as on backorder, unless this is a default setting on their websites. I suspect if you wait for them to fill their backorder, you will never see it. The Mark III replaced the Mk II. I hope this help you and others.

Agreed. At least Sony is still playing the game. Canon seems to have checked out of this part of the market. Agree 100... I much prefer an actual camera than my phone.

I didn't take many photos with the mark iii. I imagine for photos it is probably fine.

I'm a big Canon fan but the reality is that the Sony ZV1 i is probably the best camera in this class right now. I like the ZV1 i better than the ZV1 ii for your daughter's competitions because it has a 75m zoom vs the ZV1 ii maxes out at 50mm. I own the ZV1 i. It's really good. The autofocus is incredible and you can hook up a microphone if you want. If you want a little more reach the Canon G7X Mii is good because it has a 100mm equivalent zoom, however you can not hook up a microphone and it only shoots in 1080, no 4k. The internal mic is good but not as good as hooking up an external. I had a hard time finding a new G7X ii, but ended up overpaying on ebay for one. I use the G7X ii for hiking because the mic for that kind of shooting isn't that important to me. The ZV1 is probably the better camera with more features these days, the only downside on the photo side is that there is no built in flash.

Except for a little lower level build quality and trash autofocus the mark iii would be amazing. Canon really missed an opportunity here. I ended up getting a Mark II because just like you I love the look. I did get a ZV1 but the look is not the same. Don't get me wrong the ZV1 has an excellent image quality but there is something about the Canon look.

​@@jz_glass Interesting about the build, I got mine in silver metal and it feels very heavy and premium. (Maybe too heavy hence I dropped it). Yea, I don't know what Canon is thinking, Their G7x line has had a cult following for a decade, it doesn't make sense that they don't take advantage of it. It's due an update, it would sell out so fast.

@@TheVirgin If Canon fixes the autofocus it I would be happy. If they fix the autofocus and have build quality as good as the mark ii, I would snap it up in a minute.

So... I ended up purchasing the Mark II and the ZV1. If The G7X MII does not have a mic jack so if you want audio that is better than the built in mic you need to record audio externally. This makes this a bit cumbersome. If having a compact camera with a built in mic jack is important to you go with the ZV1.

I go spartan with this bag. It’s tiny. I don’t bring another lens because I bring my light meter instead. I think this bag is too small for a mirrorless camera with a viewfinder that protrudes on top. This is best for a range finder or maybe a mirror less without a viewfinder like a Canon M6 or Sony A6400. There is room for an extra small prime like a 35 or 50mm.

@@prizepictures1 Anytime. By the way you can easily store your keys in the inside net on the top if you don’t already have a lot in there. I store 3 rolls of film there so I hang my keys off the side with a Cari Inter.

It came installed. I checked. Funny... I am watching the footage right now. I thought maybe I was over reacting then the footage reminded me why it was such a good idea to send the mark iii back.

What a shame because I had been seeing some reviews and they indicated that with the update this problem practically disappeared. I guess I'll have to look for another camera.

@@DanielCabanillasArriaga I saw a lot of those too. Especially when I was scrambling for a fix. There is an option to shoot the way the camera originally came with the old firmware and also with the new firmware. I tried the old firmware option to see what it was like and it was unusable. The new firmware is a vast improvement from that but still junk when compared to the G7XM II. If you are going to point the camera at your own face at arm's distance most of the time I don't think you will have too many issues. I don't use the camera like that so it's a problem for me. If I didn't love the G7X Mark II so much I would have purchased the Sony ZV-1.

I am at my house at the moment and only have my hex mini sling bag to try this with. For the hex mini-sling the dividers are a little tall, however the mini sling is much shallower than the hex sling. I will try it out with the full size hex tomorrow when I'm in the office. You are genius! I just noticed that Peak Design will sell their dividers individually as replacements. If this works I am going to replace my hex dividers with peak design dividers. I'll keep you posted. Will hit you back tomorrow.

It’s not a real good fit with the peak design dividers. They are designed for a deeper bag so they stick out of the hex bag a bit. I noticed that Peak Design sells replacement camera cube dividers. They look like they might be a better fit. I don’t actually have any of those to test.
