St. John asks a question seemingly interrupting Jesus' teaching on being childlike which began last week. Our Lord answers St. John, but then goes back to what it means to be childlike and how we shouldn't tolerate anything that causes us to sin i.e. stumble.

I have this prayer book. It's excellent for those who are attending the Traditional Mass
I have a question sorry if I sound ignorant I’m new here. The pope Pius 12 psalter is not included in here right ?
They do not use the Pius XII psalms. The "Bea Psalms" are not in use anymore and the Benedictines never adopted that translation. They stayed with the Vulgate. So this diurnal uses the traditional Vulgate for the Latin. I do not know what translation is used for the English.
@ thank you. 🙏 I probably buy it in the near future. I just bought the 1961 baronius Press breviary they didn’t include the Pope Pius 12 Psalter either.
I recently bought this set and was very pleased. I didn't buy the slipcase, since I don't plan on bringing the volumes with me outside my home. As I do with all my more expensive books, I cut off the frayed end of the ribbons and apply clear nail polish to them. This might be a weird take, but in some sense, it is "too user friendly". For example, many of the texts in the Ordinary (both the "ordinary Ordinary" and the "Ordinary of the Season") are also in the Psalter itself, like the Nunc Dimittis at Compline, the readings at the Capitular Office of Prime, and the antiphons for the minor Hours during Advent and Lent. Lot less page flipping than anticipated. Not really a complaint; it just shows the love and care that went into it. This has made it easier for me to pray the Divine Office devoutly, as I now have a book instead of an app.
Oh! How do you properly read it if you’re doing it for personal prayer and devotion? I’ve been reading today’s date each day. So if it’s December 20th I read that days Martyrs
To your first question, I believe ICEL (icelweb.org/) is in charge of the translation. Since the Martyrology itself isn't as popularly known, I don't think there's really a rush to finish its translation. Traditionally, the next day's entry was read, so on Dec 20th, you would read the entry for Dec 21st. As for reading it as a devotional, yes, you can simply read through however many entries for the day you like.
I have one but it’s not the newest update like yours. So this newer one is only in Latin and not English the eh? Any idea when the English might come out?
This is a great gift for a fellow Catholic. I use my book mostly for the nine days of prayer for the Dead. It is also wonderful for Adoration. I was unaware of the excerpts from the Imitation of Christ or details on the four last things. Thank you so much for the video Deacon. Ave Maria!
Glad to see that such a book like this has art work or woodcuts that match its beauty and reverence.
I have the chapel edition printed in 2015, and obviously, Joseph is mentioned
I have the chapel edition which includes some additional texts of new saints canonized since the altar sized version was published
Wow, what a beautiful book! Thanks for letting us look inisde. God bless you.
Are you a transitional or permanent deacon?
transitional with priestly ordination hopefully in mid 2025 please keep me and all clergy/seminarians in your prayers
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbispleaae keep it up and we will keep praying.
Thanks for making this review video.
the one with the gold guilding is sold out everywhere right now.
Beautiful binding. I first became aware of the CA as inserts in “The Sunday Sermons of the Great Fathers”.
Does this have more than the blessed trinity prayer book? That’s the one I have and want to know if it’s worth getting this too?
I'm not familiar with the Blessed Trinity prayer book. If you look in the description of this video you should find a link to some pictures of the table of contents for this book which you can then compare to the Blessed Trinity prayer book.
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis thank you!
Hi, I heard you said the English was not approved but wouldn’t all of the book be approved by authorities thus making it liturgical?
There are 3 things we might see at the beginning of an ecclesiastical work. There is a difference between the "nihil obstat" granted when no errors prevent the book from being published, the "imprimi potest" which is granted by a religious superior for a work written by one in the religious community, and the "imprimatur" which is when the bishop of the place gives permission for it to be printed. Yet all of these don't necessarily include the approval of vernacular translations of liturigcal texts. Since the Divine Office is a liturgical prayer, any cleric who is bound to pray the Divine Office would need to either use the original latin text, or an approved vernacular translation such as those prepared by ICEL or some other group. A similar example would be the 1962 latin-english hand missals used by many people. While these have an english translation of the missal texts, it was mean for an individual's own enrichment and not for official use
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis oh this makes sense, thank you for this detailed explanation Deacon!
I just wanted to ask how long did it take for it to be delivered to you? Thank you. I also ordered from the same site you put on the link.
I believe it was a few weeks - at least for me - since it had to be delivered internationally. Hopefully there's no problems with your shipment
I've searched the size, but I don't found that... can you tell me the Monastic Diurnal's sizes?
The measurements are approximately 6 inches tall, 4 inches deep, and 1.25 inches wide. The 8th edition is a good pocket size. The cover will make it larger but it will also keep the book protected
You need to have the 1924 edition. Before VII because print maybe changed 🙏
It's a 1960 reprint and VII began in 1962 so there is no cause for your concern. Additionally, I trust PCP to do an honest job reprinting older works
Any prayers for souls in purgatory. How big is the print
There are prayers for those who are dying and recently deceased. There is one prayer mentioning the holy souls in purgatory, but there isn't a section specifically for that devotion. The print is normal for the size of the book probably 12 or 11 point font. It's small but decently spaced and readable for me at least.
Great review! Just ordered mine today
Where can we buy the book from?
If you look on amazon it's available from a couple different vendors: www.amazon.com/s?k=visits+to+Jesus+in+the+tabernacle&crid=3CERC5YA8DOE9&sprefix=visits+to+jesus+in+the+tabernacle%2Caps%2C90&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
Great
Do you know the text size? Small text kills me! This is why I have held off buying a set of the Summa. The text seems so small on the Summa volumes, this Catena Aurea looks good though.
I have no way of telling the font size precisely. The text of the Gospel looks to be around 14 or 12 point with the commentary by the fathers being one level below that. I find it spaced out and large enough to read leisurely. Here is a sample page Baronius Press provides if you want to print it out and see www.baronius.com/media/sample_pages/sample_page__3200.pdf
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis This info is very useful, thank you so much. I am probably going to pick this up in large part due to this information.
the font on the summa isn't bad. it's bigger than it looks, especially with a bookmark.
I don't even know why I'm watching this I can't speak latin, but now I want one.
Com o tempo de aprender e muita oração
I personally use the edition published by Lancelot Andrewes Press. Matins and Vespers I use the 1928 Book of Common Prayer I personally love it as it's in line with the BCP with the seasonal collects. I do also use the Anglican Office Book as well
Would you happen to know which English translation of the Psalms it uses?
Since the Diurnal is published by an english community, my best guess would be some version of - or similar to - the Book of Common Prayer, although I have no way to verify this.
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis Thanks for the reply. I was guessing along similar lines and checked the Coverdale Psalms in the Book of Common Prayer. It's not them. Nor the KJV (which would be understandable) or an early version of the RSV, which also has thees and thous. Neither is it the Knox. Or the Douay-Rheims. If it is a modern (1960s or something) translation, it's strange that the language is anachronistic, imitating Elizabethan English. The reason I think it's a modern "anachronistic" translation is that the syntax and grammar isn't quite the same as genuine (slightly awkward) Elizabethan English. Either that, or it's been smoothed out in a revision. I'm still guessing :)
Did you procure this set from the publisher recently, or did you get them a few years ago? The binding looks a little finer than what I’ve seen in person over the last few years.
I believe I ordered this late 2018 or early 2019. I haven't seen many other copies in the wild so I haven't had a chance to compare
Thank you!
Did you see the Novo et Veteral Breviarium Romanum or one that online looks to me to be similar but likely not real leather from "Editions Iris", a French publisher that does a really nice leather Latin-French Roman Diurnal?
Such a niche publisher and niche book for that matter and I genuinely appreciate you posting all these reviews. I just submitted my order request today. God bless you
Stunningly beautiful breviary.
do you recommend the 7th over the 8th edition?
Unfortunately, I think the 7th edition is no longer available rendering such a question a moot point.
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis Not really. I found one that is why i am asking for opinions.
Unlike the 7th ed. I havent used the 8th ed. for an extended time as I borrowed it for the video. While the 8th may not seem as durable I think the case it ships with makes up for the difference. If they're both the same price go with the 8th. If the 7th is significantly cheaper and you want to just try it out then go that route
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis Thank you last question. The 7th was significantly more expensive so does it have something the 8th does not?
@@gegaoli I dont know what shop you were looking at but it's possible the older edition has gone up precisely because it is no longer in print and thus considered a "limited" edition by someone looking to make more. Other than that the two are the same as I noted in the video so I dont see why one would be more than another
Hello Benjamin, I know that they are two different books, but between this and Blessed Be God ~ if you could only choose one, which would you choose? Thanks so much, and God Bless!!
If I was going for portability I'd choose this smaller book; if I was looking for the most prayers in a devotional book, I'd likely choose "Blessed Be God"
I just ordered this, helpful review. I don’t attend TLM, but I figure I can repurpose the readings as just a general selection of scripture to read whenever. Also, really cool that I’d have a TLM missile basically right there in case I ever wanted to attend one! Also, from looking at the table or contents, I think even if you ignore the third or so of the book dedicated to the Latin mass, the other 2/3 still packs way more content than any modern prayer book you could buy today. Modern publishers need to step it up!
Thanks for the review. I do have a couple of questions: Are there any prayers before/after Mass? Are there any other additional prayers (e.g. the seven penitential psalms)?
It does include the penitential psalms and Litany and prayers for those who are dying. I dont believe it has preparatory prayers for Mass as it's meant as a breviary and not a devotional book
I'm guessing the 2020 version has all the typos fixed from the the first print Baronius put out (I think it was back in 2013)? Another blogger I follow had complained about too many typos... also: is the extra price worth it or is the PCP version just as good? Great review!
I haven't noticed any typos but I also haven't read it very thoroughly using it more for reference than continual reading. Also I'm sorry, but I'm not aware of the differences between it the PCP and Baronius versions I'd have to look into it more.
Where did you purchase this wonderful print edition?
I left a link in the description. I'm sure there's other places you could obtain one, but the vatican bookstore is the main place www.vaticanum.com/en/martyrologium-romanum-editio-typica-altera-2004
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis Thank you. I’ve wanted a copy of this for a long time.
Out of curiosity, do you know which Bible the English translation came from?
The book itself doesn't say. I did a little looking around but nothing came up too easily except it's a reprint of the 1963 edition. Perhaps an older edition might state which translation has been used. Otherwise it seems the only option is to sit down and compare it with another to figure it out.
@@StatCruxVolviturOrbis Ok. Thank you so much for replying.
I was going to ask exactly the same question! When I bought it, I expected it to be the Douay-Rheims. It reads well though.
How thorough is matins in this?
If by thorough you mean those bound to recite the divine office can fulfill their obligation using matins as it is in this edition, then it's thorough. It doesn't have English and it's after the reforms of St. John XXIII so matins may not be as "thorough" as the benedictine office or any older versions of the roman breviary you find, but this edition has the standard 9 psalms and 3 readings and then 9 readings for certain feasts
I have a copy from 1926. I love it and recently took it to a bookbinder to have it rebound as the cover has finally become worn out. I won’t get it back for about 6 months and I miss it terribly. The review made me miss it all the more because he is absolutely correct. It is an exquisite book in design, art, and prayer.
I have one of the originals from my late mother
That sounds like a wonderful spiritual treasure!

The Barroux Abbey in France sells the Novo et Vetera Breviarium Romanum as well. Their website is more modern and secure than Novo et Vetera's.
I was just looking for info on this!! prefect timing!!

I used this as a child in the 1950’s and it was my daily companion through high school. Unfortunately, I no loner have my original.
Are the psalms arranged on a single column? I don’t think you showed a psalm in this review.
No, the psalms and the rest of the breviary follow the 2 column layout of the propers. They have more pictures on their website www.breviariumromanum.com/inside.html
Can you do a review on the Baronius press missal
I do have a copy of Baronius' 62 missal but I have some other books I'd like to review first. There are some decent video reviews and comparisons about the Baronius Press missal available online though
How much is that?
If you follow the links in the description you'll find it's about 35-40 USD
