Had this happen on a jet ski when i worked as a mechanic at a kawi dealer.....

Fuel tank vent hose should work both ways but a lot of people and aftermarket fools think that they can reinvent the wheel...as a long time rider and mechanic I always try to share everything that I know makes motorcycling the most enjoyable, and another bad habit is letting the bike sit at idle especially when the engine is already hot which I can pretty much guarantee was part of this cause.

Impressive how you guys all jumped into action to help your friend. Another reason to never go out on a ride alone. Crazy things can happen at anytime. Glad he is ok.

Blocked fuel pump? Boiling fuel is scary.

My 890 Adventure did this in my garage the other day. Has 400 miles on it. Pissed me off. Back at the dealership so we will see.

My Husky 350S did this to me on a ride from Pagosa Springs to Leadville Colorado. I opened the tank at altitude after stopping and it just Geyser'd fuel on me

It's an emission standard that forced KTM to build a closed fuel tank vent system that explodes like that. I bet other bikes under emission standards also have similar. You can't vent gas tank into the atmosphere - it's considered a pollution. Find "desmogging kit" anywhere on large MX stores if you want to get rid of it.

Completely crazy. What if some of the fuel started a fire on the header pipe? Extremely dangerous. Could also start a forest fire. Someone in Belfry Montana started a huge fire checking for spark on their two stoke last year, you can look it up....

Mine did this at altitude in the Andes. It's their stupid venting system that causes the positive pressure. The vent combines with the canister hose then goes down to a larger hose which is plugged at the bottom. Pull that plug and you'll be ok. My eyelid flapped like a dogs lip when he sticks his head out the car window. I was all over KTM Canada on this and other things. They didn't give a crap. Glad you're ok.
