Stroke of Genius ~ Language Dances to Its Own Here

Stroke of Genius ~ A Memoir
This is not thought I would be doing in 2024. In November of 2023, I had a stroke and consequently, I have aphasia and apraxia that messes up language - both speaking and writing. And for some more fun, sometime in February my 3rd generation Canadian accent disappeared and in its place, I began speaking with an East European accent. Foreign Accent Syndrom is fun!
In my videos, I share my experience, both professional and personal, and try to share gathered "wisdom" with inspiration and humour.
My name is Tara and I’m coming to you from near the Rocky Mountains. I used to tell people about my background by saying... I met my husband at a nudist park, it turns out he was a rock star and then I decided to become a priest! I’m much too lazy to write a book. Intrigued? You can all find my podcasts in my series You Should Write a Book ~ the Podcast on my RUclips Channel.
And send me a note, comment or an email...it's lonely being a podcaster!

I hope you enjoy this peek into what living with a condition like this is like. This is one of his favourite websites for information about the condition. neurosymptoms.org/en/ Functional Neurological Disorder ...

I had the opportunity to speak to some specialists in the Stroke community. I was invited to talk about my experience in the hospital as a patient with aphasia, apraxia of speech and foreign accent syndrome. I'm grateful that the organizers included voices like mine, a patient with lived experience, along with clinicians, doctors, therapists, and researchers. Hosted jointly by the CanStroke Rec...

Mom, you're having a stroke. I'm calling 9 1 1 and I'm on my way. A, stroke? But my body was fine. I could walk normally. And when I checked the mirror, I saw my. My face wasn't dropping. So it can't be a stroke. My dad had a stroke and I'd seen his whole left body paralyzed. That was stroke.

Do you have a meditation practice? I laughed when the doctor in the stroke unit told me that I had to get more rest and less my stress... I can you imagine having a life without any stress? Yeah. I can't imagine it either. Today my speech was "normal" meaning that I had my Tatiana voice and aphasia but this amazing thing happened. In a group "GRX" we did a practice of meditation and....I got my...

Thanks for sharing your story and for making this presentation Tara! 💕
Beautiful Tara. Thank you for sharing💕
Happy Thanksgiving to you too Tara! Thrilled that time with your family is a success and that you’re leaning into curiosity and enjoying your day!
Thank you so much!
👏👏👏 Thank you for sharing.
We will do another interview with David to hear his voice again! He's so brave
Thank you, there are very few videos on foreign accent syndrome and FND. It is wonderful to hear about the condition directly from those with lived experience. Thank you for spreading awareness. Great interview 👏👏👏 wishing all the best for both of you.
Glad it was helpful! If you want to share please do this. This is the fourth interview on my channel, have a look. And subscribe if you can!
Thank you for your video and spreading awareness about foreign accent syndrome ❤
@fndtogether-tnfensemble1228 thank you! It's an important conversation to have and who better to talk about it..is someone with it!
Tara thank you for sharing your struggle. I am so sorry that you are having it as well. Everything you say resonates with me. I have always loved singing! And had such a great memory for lyrics etc., but I have lost almost all my lyrics as well. On the metronome app are there different tones you can pick? I can't take the one you played. It would definitely cause me to have a seizure for a long period. I am currently on 7 mos without one! Woo hoo!
Hello. I searched on Google Play store and found some either metronome. This app seems to have other tones you can choose. You might have to try a few to find that has a good match for your brain. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eumlab.android.prometronome
Thank you so much!
Singing! So helpful lol. Look on RUclips for karaoke and belt out some of your favourites
Tara, this is exactly what I experience.
Have you had speech therapy? I did find some help from them. I will share some tricks soon! Thanks for watching
@@strokeofgeniusamemoir I did in the beginning, 3 years ago because it was really bad, and my stuttering was really bad. Knock on wood lost the stutter. But, when I asked for more therapy, I was told by the neurologist, "you've had enough therapy."
@MizzMac108 as I mentioned I'm not a professional. Having said that I know some stuff lol. I'm going to share some little tips that have helped me life with aphasia. There is help. And there is hope. And for my videos watch them at 1.5 speed...it is a better listening experience lol.
Thanks for sharing and teaching us more about aphasia Tara. Glad you can still drive and cook for yourself. ❤
Thanks Catherine! This is me thinking that my brain is fascinating lol
Your recuperation is amazing and may you continue to succeed in your journey forward. My mother died of Alzheimer's disease in 2007, and as her caregiver I learned first hand about how language devolves and words are distorted as the illness progresses. It's like tabula rasa in reverse and it's difficult to explain unless you have lived through the experience.
Thank you for your comment! While I'm searching for the right word my brain is flooded with nonsense sounds, words that might rhyme or...words from the back of memory. I'm sorry you lost your mom. It's hard to watch someone you love disappear with this disease. Thank you for sharing
Thank you Kelly. I feel so supported by you. ❤
Well said. Huge hugs to you.
Super!!! Kido so happy for you. ❤

Thanks, Ellen!
Beautiful! Thank you for writing this for Tony & Natalie, for the SPTV Community and for all who are fortunate enough to have their hearts embraced by your words. ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it! It was my pleasure.
Nice to hear this interview. Thanks for sharing ladies ❤️
Thanks Ellen! Hopefully we'll see you soon!
I believe what @Erin is talking about is called a nebulizer. Basically it is a machine that holds the broncho-dilating medication and bubbles it up into a vapor that is inhaled to open up the airways so one can breathe better.
Thank you, Tara! This is wonderful advice! I have had to learn to live with a body that can't always do what I need it to do and I am learning, like you, to do what I can, strategize to make things easier when I can, and accept that good enough really is good enough. Those the greatest gifts we can give ourselves, aren't they? Have a gentle day, my friend.
You have nothing to prove to anyone. Take care of yourself and those close to you...and if you can find "ease" sometimes, take it! Have a hopeful day, my friend.
What a cute house!
Thanks you so much
Thank you for sharing! FAS is a fascinating condition and I'm amazed to see how you're not letting it hold you back from speaking to us. In my opinion, you sound great! Don't worry about negative reactions from people who are too ignorant to overcome their prejudice.
Thank you! I'm trying to embrace it lol

Thanks David! I'm SO curious about what is happening in my brain lol. Good to hear from you.
Thanks Derwyn!
This is a lovely way to explore and explain your brain :)
Hi Tara, sending you lots of love💜
Hi! I've been working intensively on a crime documentary, and I value your opinion. If you could take some time to watch the video and share your thoughts, I would greatly appreciate it.
Love it🙏😍♥️👏
Thanks Karin!
Someone asked me why I can't sing in a choir. You saw me singing to a karaoke Blue Christmas...and I can follow by the words. For song I knows well and that is slow I can manage. But if I try to sing a song with a radio or one of my Playlist that I know all, no words come. The tune..and a la la it's all I can mange
