The Return of MV Loch Shira
After 4 months out of service with ramp issues the resident Cumbrae vessel Loch Shira has returned, after a period of disruption on the service with 6 vessels covering for the Shira over her absence. The return is certainly welcome as during weekends waiting times for the service often was hours due to smaller vessels operating. Thankfully now that looks to be in the past with the large Loch Shira now having returned.
Hope you enjoy the video!

The Bute Ferries
Просмотров 306Месяц назад
With disruption on the Clyde being a massive issue this Summer season for the Calmac network with problems with Caledonian Isles and Loch Shira one service on the Clyde that remained pretty problem free is the Wemyss Bay to Rothesay service. As a result I decided to take a trip over to Bute and back on both the resident ferries for the run, heading over on MV Argyle before returning on MV Bute....

With the sun beaming down on the Clyde it was a lovely day for some sailing and Gourock was the location. Having arrived we sailed over to Kilcreggan on the MV Chieftain and after an hour ashore sailed back over to Gourock where the two Dunoon ferries changed over allowing us to see all 3 Gourock based boats at the same time. A once potential future in the making since Hebrides was speculated to have been earmarked for transfer to Oban to serve as running mate to Isle of Mull back when Glen Rosa was still her intended replacement. With Caledonian Isles now apparently set to outright replace Isle of Mull next year, I'm wondering if she's now destined for the Barra run since Isle of Lewis is also on the chopping block.

There seems to be a lot of people complain about CalMac but I can honestly say every time I have travelled with them they have been great, the staff always seem helpful and the smaller vessels the staff are chatty too which for a geek like me makes the trip.

Thank goodness Andrew Banks chartered his ship, the MV Alfred to CMAL/CalMac. This ferry has saved the island of Arran’s economy. Maybe if the owners of CalMac had listened to John Rose (founder of Western Ferries) and chartered the MV Highland Seabird 40+ years ago, we would not be in such a mess). As for vested interest groups that are frightened of MV Alfred and putting about the lie that Pentland Ferries are making millions. The charter INCLUDES FUEL AND CREW COSTS. For those with the hidden agendas, maybe declare this fact next time you try and do down this valiant effort to help Islanders. Just out of interest, does anyone care to hazard a factual assessment of how much the MV Alfred fuel bill is for a full year? Also for fairness, how much fuel (in pound notes) does the MV Caledonian Isles go through each year? Whatever else, a HUGE round of thanks to Andrew Banks (and his brilliant Orcadian crew) at Pentland Ferries for saving the Arran economy. God help the other islands on the West Coast.

The majority of crew on the Alfred are from the West coast, very few Orcadians on it- most are on the Pentalina.

She has done the job well though. Remember, the boat was designed for the run from Gills Bay to St Margaret's Hope, it wasn't designed to be used at different berths. The fact she is very beamy at 22m affects this too. The system works well, few vehicles have to reverse on. It is far cheaper to run and to be fair, do vessels really require bars and restaurants for sailings taking less than an hour?
