Washington Native Bee Society (WaNBS)
США
Добавлен 11 окт 2022
The Washington Native Bee Society (WaNBS) was created in 2020 with the aim of providing a common location for all of Washington's solitary bee enthusiasts to convene in a semi-social way. We may not have a hive mind but will work together to share resources and information. We strive to build productive relationships and to make a positive impact by promoting awareness and conservation of Washington’s native bees.

Will spent eight years monitoring bee populations at weedy sites around the central Puget Sound, most notably at an abandoned golf course off the end of runway 34R at SeaTac Airport. He will be stringing together anecdotes about nets, traps, and boxes full of bees, in the hope that a story about restoration and discovery falls out at the end.
Pollination biology of the Willamette daisy: conservation implications for endangered prairie plant
Просмотров 685 месяцев назад
The Willamette daisy (Erigeron decumbens) is an endangered species with just a few small populations in the Willamette Valley. The Institute for Applied Ecology has been instrumental in investigating what this species requires for successful recovery. In our presentation, we focus on pollination. To what extent does E. decumbens require pollinators? Is pollen a limiting resource for the plant’s...
Flower Phenology at Heather Meadows, North Cascades

This presentation will discuss results from a five-year study of flower phenology and pollinator foraging at Heather Meadows. We observed 70 flowering plant species in seven transects at elevations ranging from 1,260 to 1,582 meters. In a typical year, there was continuity of floral resources within each transect and across the elevational gradient for the duration of the growing season. Black ...
Using detection probabilities to find rare bumble bees - an example from the Midwest

Bees are small and highly mobile animals, which can make them difficult to detect in the landscape. Whether searching for bees for research, monitoring, or recreation, sometimes a species is present at a site but goes undetected. This phenomenon, known as imperfect detection, points to the need to consider factors that influence the detectability of target species. Is a specific bee species mor...

While the Pacific Northwest is famous for vast forested landscapes, expansive, sunny wildflower meadows once occupied tens of thousands of acres in a thin linear band extending from British Columbia to Northern California. Largely erased from contemporary memory, these regional “prairies” were biologically supercharged with pollinators and grassland birds, aesthetically captivating, and they we...
Barcoding the Bees of the PNW

Species identity is an important consideration when trying to understand how communities are organized, how they change, and how they function. For most bee genera however, there lack modern identification resources and many of these genera still contain many undescribed or otherwise cryptic species. Integrative taxonomy with a focus on morphology and DNA barcoding is an effective strategy for ...
The Fairy Bees and Allies Found in North America with a Focus on Washington State

The fairy bees and their allies (Andrenidae: Panurginae) are a group of small, rarely observed bees which are most diverse in arid regions of western North America. Nathaniel Green will cover various genera of Panurginae found in North America, discussing their identification and natural history. The main emphasis will be on the genera found in Washington, with particular attention given to the...
Plant Pollinator Networks and Global Environmental Change
Просмотров 566 месяцев назад
The structure of interactions between plants and pollinators has strikingly consistent features across the world, irrespective of ecosystem type. These structures may help buffer plant-pollinator systems from disturbances like global environmental change, but also have some puzzling features. I will discuss some of my lab’s work on this topic while also introducing some new (and new to us) rela...
Fall... The Perfect time to plant a P-------r Bee Garden
Просмотров 376 месяцев назад
Fall is the best time to plant as it gives plants time to establish themselves, and some are fully settled by the following summer. Peak planting time in most of Washington is from late September through early October or so, with grasses going in earlier in September for extra rooting time. Spend an hour with Michael talking about pollinator garden planning and what native bees you might be abl...

Brood Cell Mutualists: Solitary Bees and Mites

Acarinaria are specialized anatomical structures found on a variety of bees and wasps that provide safe-harbor for beneficial mites. While these mite species provide advantageous services, other hitchhiking mites can be deleterious to the host. Sarah Gardner's presentation at the Jan 26, 2023 meeting of the Washington Native Bee Society examines the relationships between these mites and their h...
