that was so inspiring. I bought a bw200 a month ago because of your videos. What was the pitch on that slope?
Very steep and the rocks slant sideways Most 4wd’s have to winch up
Those climbs look steep in the video so I can only imagine what they looked like in person. The right tool for the job!
Yeah it’s a constant climb Gold miners hauled equipment up there in the 1800s losing a few livestock through hard labour ( deadstock) it was the toughest climb on what was the first road of four going into skippers canyon
Is it true that they have issues in the mud? too heavy?
No not at all They’re a heavy bike by modern standards but with decent mud tyres they are brilliant in the mud Possibly that opinion has come about because they originally came out with grass type tyres which would be hopeless
I can't see riding anything else up that hill that would be more enjoyable or easy? Dirtbike would be more difficult and a atv and even an atc wouldn't be as much fun. @ 4:15min
Atv wouldn’t fit , it’s a goat track on the side of a very steep hill with some trees just wider than the handlebars
@@notsorare Yah exactly, so cool, do you guys still have these bikes? I'm about to do a trade for a 1986 bw200. I have a 2001 honda cr250r but want to do more trail riding. The only thing wrong with the bw is the electric start, he says the motor wont turn fast enough to start the bike. New batteries installed so maybe it's the starter motor?
I just watched the entire video, you guys have some balls! lol
@@IIBLaCKBeaRDII yes it will probably need new brushes and a good clean I use a gel battery in mine
@@IIBLaCKBeaRDII thanks (replied in a high voice)
Hey. Do you still have these bikes? Thanks. Andrew NZ
Yes
That bike made easy work of those rocks and crossings. Looks super fun for trails, I want one!!!
Thanks Jay They absorb rocks well
1 thumbs down from a city dwelling Karen, apparently.
Hi, looks good. You still have your bw200? Cheers Louis
Yes Louis Still going well with an o/hauled engine and gearbox
@@notsorare hi, thanks for getting back to me. Sounds cool.. I have always liked them. I'm actually looking for one but the seem rare as hens teeth in NZ. Theres Heaps of them in the USA so maybe importing one is my only option. I have never seen one in person either.
Not many going here My first one sold for $3000 a few+ years ago I got it from Auckland Most seem to be in the north island My friend has Three
A 350 would be good never sold them in nz
A Honda 300x? Trike is a good donor for a conversion
Straight up mad dog
Wonder why a company doesn't still make these I would buy a few myself
The standard carb isn’t great. The Mikuni sounds good
I’ve never seen an 85 , not sure if any came to nz
Great bike that can go lots of places...had an 85...geared it down and had flat slide Mikuni carb n Supertrap exhaust...miss her I do....still got a BW350....
The skippers road runs alongside the Shotover River Skippers creek is a tributary only
Im American, and from what I've heard, actually driving up Skipper's creek is probably easier and safer than taking Skipper's Canyon Road
Pyrus Rex Skippers Canyon Rd runs above the Shotover River not skippers creek which is a tributary
@@eddybell3435 my mistake. I probably should have known that, that is jet boat paradise. i live on the payette river in the state of idaho, so we're definitely familiar with Sir Hamilton's invention. NZ rocks!
Pyrus Rex thanks I’ll google it when I’m home I’m too chicken to take my boat in the Shotover 🐥
@@eddybell3435 cheers
Skippers Canyon RD is easy. It is just a dirt road. If you are scared of heights, I guess it could be a bit much. Being from Colorado I am used to similar roads.
ha ha.. hes always yelling at that guy to pick his feet up.
Because ... it dont look professional paddling up a mountain
The track has now been re-routed around that bog by the local 4WD club.
thats not news to me but thanks
love the footage..and bikes . Sure wish you didn't traverse those fragile streams though :(
Thanks for your comments This fragile stream has been known to Flash flood at times once killing about 30 miners that were working its bed and is pretty awe inspiring in flood cant see us doing more damage that nature itself does. please dont get carried away
Great video! I was holding my breath at times!!
How's the ride? Do you feel to hunched over?
Those things look awesome. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the BW200? I am thinking of buying an RV 90 clone.
+Paul Dykstra They are great in Rocks which they absorb well, in mud and slippery steep terrain. only real fault i can see for a bike designed in the 80s is the swingarm can get caught up on steep sidlings and highside the rider. An Rv 90 is best used as a boat anchor . maybe as transport along the hard sand on a beach at best
What about a DR200?
+Paul Dykstra sorry Paul I have no experience with a DR200 but i think they have normal size tyres? in which case its a different type of bike
@@notsorare the rv90 is ok on the beach with the rear tyre at the right pressure
kinda like a tractor lol looks like a lot of fun
Thats very helpful thanks for the advice yes i will give it a good spray im in england uk i bet nobody has seen one here before,i have a gas turbine engine i was thinking about mounting that on the back as well just for a laugh it will give it a boost you can see it running on my bike on here on my other channel type in (brens jet bike ) ha ; )
The idea would be to get a drive off a turbine like that (turboprops do this) and gear it to drive the jet unit . By mounting it on the kayak you may go so fast as to exceed the ability to steer /? The bike is impressive! Im glad there are other mad people out there
Hey thank you very much for your reply much appreciated people dont usually reply i should get them both by next week any idea where to get spares from in case they brake iv just ordered a wetsuit and boots cant wait to do some fishing off it did you sell yours? Cheers
Big Shed Idea's yes i sold mine , The first one i had was an adventurer with which I did a lot of river fishing but it did not feel stable while fishing at sea so I bought a brand new ex earthquake stock GTXL hawaii If you are in NZ there is a dealer in the north Island somewhere. The sth Island dealer doesnt handle them any more. Spray a lot of crc around All moving parts eg cables carby bits and joystick. The magnetic base for the cable that attaches to you is usually not very tight BUT if you tighten it up it may result in you having a motor that unexplainably wont start.
Big Shed Idea's on the lh side in the vid the yellow rope runs from the bow to near the stern . With a shark clip you can attach a small anchor to this running line and pull it to the bow after dropping anchor makes for stable craft in swells etc
Great video iv just bought 2 of them second hand cant wait to get them ,arw you wearing wet suits with water proof boot or dry suits? Any issues with them? Can you carry them easy or is it a 2 man job also do you get wet on them thanks
Big Shed Idea's Hi Thanks for the comment I was wearing a wetsuit with booties . Issues: The motors are ok but you really have to keep the electrics protected in salt water . The cooling system is a good concept and barely adequate .I made a small heat exchanger that eased my peace of mind . The gtxl Hawai model is great in rough water with its turned up nose but i had a standard model that used to ship water if driven slowly thru a chop even submarined on me once! Two men can carry them . I used a kayak trolley with pneumatic tires and could manage them easily. wouldnt like to paddle one far . the sit in one is better in rivers and easy to paddle
You fellas are just having a blast out there. Enjoyed the video
naioti Thanks Thats despite landowners dropping trees across the tracks to stop us ! Muscles and a tow rope get rid of these pesky obstacles
This is just awesome fun!
This is great stuff! Go big wheels!
i have two bw 200s.. this looks fun as hell. no wheel spin means go anywhere
Mike has at least three
Im down to one now Fully restored one and sold it.Ill keep this one till I progress to a walking frame
I prefer this view rather than the tip of a front guard
We dont have those orv tabs
Thats WITH a new chain and an extra block of Nylon! The new technology is light years away from these things but its nice to have something unique from the past that has its place
I hear you have the same problem that I do. The little chain flops around when off the throttle. I am making my own replacement chain rider from a block of nylon. Great fun these bikes, but I think I am ready to enter the 21 est century haha.
Yes I’ve started making my own sliders now
Verticly its a distance Im surprised myself a the time it took now you mention it!
Thanks for looking
those guys got some distance in just 10 minutes
Real men dont need armour! Too hot here for a helmet!
Crikey mate! Jagged rocks + shorts= carnage! Sweet BW!
Last time we went in there there was a slip further on than the willow but there were signs of trails bikes across it . Us old fullas dont take those risks anymore cos we cant carry the bikes over our shoulders anymore
yea i have heard that, my oldman has said about heading up there on bikes, ive only been part way into bullendale but there was a wash out along the track after i think its wong willow? but i imagine that when the river is low you could get up there? and yes rope is a good idea, DOC is only goin to get worse if they do end up getting rid of staff.
It would help if DOC looked after their tracks the way the farmers used to. It was easy enough to ride into Bullendale AND the dynamo in the 70s
really, dam 4wds reck everything ah, if you ever head in there again let me know id be keen to tag along,
That bog has been a major problem to 4wds . The road down from the hotel to the creek is dicey too . Theres a toyota below that in the bush you have to go down on foot itll never be retrieved
cool, we were going to go into skippers in the 4wd on friday, i am still planning on getting into bullendale as well. love the big wheels to, do you know of any for sale?
Sunday , went up to Archies hut at Mt Aurum flats
when did u head up there mate?
Looks cool I want one for my collection
I have just fitted a new motor to this as I had overheating problems from new caused by the header tank screws not tightened originally.so i have made and fitted an intercooler to boost the cooling system as a safeguard
