I was there in late March '67. The first bomb dump revetments were stacked sandbags. I know because I spent a week or so filling them down at the beach. I was there when the first '52 arrived from Guam. From there it was 24-7 bombing runs. We worked 12 hour shifts in the dump 6 days per week. Fun times for sure.

So here is my cognitive dissonance the good and the bad: I had a wonderful 1yr tour of duty 73-74 had a pretty good job, took leave time in country, traveled, learned to sail and ski gratis the Army special services, enjoyed Thai stick, women and food, bought a ton of stuff and sent it home free. On the dark side was the enormous waste on both sides and in the middle of lives, money, material. Agent orange hit me and many others...birth defects and so on to the natives denied for years. North Vietnam wins and we don't learn shit from the debacle. We continue to find enemies and keep it up. I never would have thought it. We are merchants of death and misery.

These videos bring back such great memories. I was there from July 68 to July 69 and so proud of guarding those big boys at night as a SP Sentry Dog Handler. Saw so many of them taking off loaded with bombs and each time wondering where they were going to be dropping them. A few years ago I ran into a Marine Company at a hotel in Olive Branch,MS having a reunion so stopped in to thank them for their service. They had served in Viet Nam and told me the different places they had been then asked me if I had served in any branch of the service. I told them that I had been in the Air Force and am sure I didn’t have it anywhere as bad as they did and that I was stationed at U-Tapoa guarding B-52s as a dog handler. They shook my hand, thanking me, and told me I had no idea how many times those B-52s had came to their rescue, saving many of their lives. You have no idea how proud that made me feel and I hope it does all of you, as well, who played some part in getting them loaded and safely flying and completing their mission. Although I was proud of serving my country and being a part of establishing the sentry dog program there, I wondered for a long time if I had accomplished any good by being there. After meeting those Marines and hearing their stories, and them thanking me, I know we all made a difference in our own way. I truly am proud to have been there doing what I did even if it didn’t seem to be a glamorous job at the time. Thank each of you who served during that time and God Bless each of you!

Nice to hear some of your stories. My name is Rick Eilers I worked Bibs 1969-70 and returned to the bomb dump in 1971-72, again in Bibs. The last half of my second tour I worked in the loading section with Ron Welch AKA Bubba. He and I are still good friends. I'll be visiting him in Washington state in 12 days. I live in Lebanon Oregon. The first time I watched this film I wondered who would be showing up in Bibs. Imagine my surprise to see myself and my Thai crew working on a load of MK82's. I do remember the day this was filmed. I asked why they were filming. The lead on the film team told me, "You people are making this whole thing work... we want film of every operation so we can make it work again in the next war." I and my crew appear in this video at time stamp 5 Minutes 13 seconds. After all these years I still speak passable Thai. Both tours I was assigned to Hootch 510. I did live most of my second tour in Ban Chang however.

I was there from June 1969 to June 1970, 635th MMS, worked in BABS (Bomb Assembly). We lived in the hooch is at the north end of the base next to the open air beer bar. Beer was $.10 a can if you wanted the premium stuff and five cents a can if you want to do less than premium stuff.

I was B52 ground crew/crew chief at Utapao in the 2nd half of 67. But, I don't remember any of us being allowed to be shirtless on the flight line. I know I always had my fatigue shirt on. Maybe it changed later on after I left in mid December 67.

I was at U-Tapao from June 1969 to June 1970. I was a munitions specialist assigned to the 635th MMS. Worked in Bomb Assembly (BABS) the last six months I was there. A 250 acre bomb dump with primarily 500 and 750 lb. bombs. We lived in hootches at the north end of the base, near the open air beer bar. I know what monsoon season is…rain, rain and more rain. I was there on 20 July 1969 when the B-52 taking off to the north aborted the takeoff, caught fire and exploded. All crew got away from a/c, but a rescue chopper, HH-43 Pedro, was too close when the munitions exploded and crew of three died. I was 20 years old and that was 54 years ago! Time Flies!

Brings back a lot of memories. I worked the fin pad from June, '68 to June of 1969 with a great bunch of guys. We all went through tech school together in Denver and were all assigned to the fin pad and to the same hooch. Despite the fact that it was the first time away from home for us, we had a great time in spite of working 12 hour shifts. Other than our bomb dump explosion in, I believe, August of '68 we never felt like we were in any danger. I guess we were all ten feet tall and bullet proof back then. Many thanks for the video.

Used my GI Bill wisely and flew for the Army for the next 16 years. God I loved those days of doing g so nothing important each and every day. Retired from INS/ICE/CBP in 2016; now nobody will let them do their jobs...sigh...Hammer

Terry, when you get footage from the National Archives, it doesn't have sound and you have to improvise. Since this was one of the first times I tried to make something like this to document what we did over there, I think I did well. Sorry you didn't like it, You are not the first to complain about the music. In retrospect I should have tried to fine engine sound effects.
