The harpsichord used in this recording is certainly a meaty sounding instrument. And just listen to the elements of almost swing rhythms in this work! You gotta love this eccentric composer.

If only she’d had been given the opportunity to perform this song at The Boar’s 🐗 Nest in good old Hazzard County in an episode of the classic 1979-85 CBS action adventure comedy series titled “THE DUKES OF HAZZARD” in the USA 🇺🇸?!

An excellent example of how lyrical the viola and the double bass can be. Dittersdorf used to play 2nd violin in a Viennese string quartet with Haydn (1st violin), Mozart (viola), and Czech composer Jan Wanhal on cello.

Absolutely the most lyrical double bass that I have ever heard and I've heard quite a few as its my favorite string instrument.

I like this older recording very much, all the notes are heard as the layers of music unfold. Zelenka is enjoying a well-deserved rediscovery of late.

I can't get enough of this work, so beautiful in it's deliberate naivete and simplicity. It brings me great comfort every time I listen to it. The animal sounds are a delight and I love the little bell.

No place to hide in this closely miked early CD recording, perhaps an engineering faux pas. So vocal forward, and such lovely voices.

Still my favorite B Minor Mass recording.

My father who came from a Swiss background loved this type of European nightclub music. I heard lots of it growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. as he had a number of LPs. He would have loved this clip. Me, I loved the monster. I was actually at Tivoli Gardens in 1964, 3 years after this movie was made. I was 12 at the time. To date REPTILICUS is the only Danish monster movie and that was 63 years ago.. Thanks, Anna for this trip down memory lane.

Next to violin, Vivaldi's favorite solo instrument was the bassoon.

Vanhal enjoyed a rather enviable career, playing music with the greats of the day and making a solid living.

The bass line used here is similar to the one used by Handel in the SARABANDE from his HARPSICHORD SUITE #4 that was orchestrated for Stanley Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON (1975). The Sarabande dates from the 16th century and was originally a folk dance like LA FOLIA. It has been used by many composers from the Baroque to the present day.

So, once again, I'll mention Gunar Letzbor is my most admired violinist performing today.

Boys and men sang church music for a very long while, male voices dominated for centuries, well into the mid 19th century. Most Baroque choral works, as we hear them today, with female altos and sopranos, is very different from how an audience of that day would have heard them performed.

The trombone remains a favorite brass instrument of Czechs/Bohemians/Moravians. You'll find it in folk music, sonatas, sinfonias, and often used in requiems, where its mellow tones are quite appropriate.

More vocal forward than the newer Vaclav Luks Collegium Vocale 1704 recording. I actually prefer this recording, and the vocalists in it. PBMS's straightforward interpretation allows the notes to stand out, plus there are delicious bits of reedy organ in the background.

I love Tůma. He is so unique. His music occupies, almost to perfection, the transitional space from Baroque to Classical. To listen to it is to be reminded at times of Fux, at other times of early Haydn, at times of Vivaldi, at times of the Mannheim school. Now and then the results are awkward, but more often than not there is an attractive stylistic complexity and tension to the music. This performance by Czech Ensemble Baroque captures all of this.

Weinberger studied at the Prague Conservatory with Vitězslav Novák and with Max Reger in Leipzig, and later worked with the Slovak National Theatre. The Fugue is a tribute to Reger.

The title literally means 'The Free Shot' or 'Free Shooter' as it refers to the hero who is using magic bullets, the last of which is directed by the Devil to whatever target the Devil chooses. The opera is commonly translated as 'The Marksman'.
