Geno Washington and the Ram Jam and playing live at Butlins - Sound of the 70's March 2017. A little bit of hero worship since I listened to Hand Clappin, Foot Stompin, Funky-Butt ... Live! which I bought in 1979.

The fabulous and majestic Paul Buchanon singing Mid Air. Although this track is several years old, there is no mistaking the depths that Paul reaches to enrich this beautiful song with emotion. The lyrics are included for further enjoyment. Filmed for the BBC.
'Enjoy the Silence' Remix by KI Theory with Lyrics - Ghost in the Shell
Просмотров 10 тыс.8 лет назад
A Moody remix of ‘Enjoy the Silence’ (Depeche Mode) by KI Theory. The remix has changed the last line of the second verse and excluded the last two lines of the final chorus. I don’t think this is as good a cover as Gary Jules' and Michael Andrews' Mad World, but it’s great nevertheless. The lyrics are included for further enjoyment. Pictures are not the best quality, just film reference. Thank...
Paul Buchanan Bowie Prom - Ashes To Ashes 2 with Lyrics
Просмотров 92 тыс.8 лет назад
A gorgeous version of David Bowie’s ‘Ashes to Ashes’, featuring Jherek Bischoff and the amazing Stargaze orchestra, wonderfully sang by Paul Buchanan (The Blue Nile) at the recent BBC Bowie Proms. Like us all, we’ve heard this Bowie song many times, but this rendition is as good as it gets in my view. Paul Buchanan made me really listen to the words like never before so I’ve uploaded this with ...

I'm not sure The Blue Nile or Paul Buchanan are/is but after this I'll have to check out their own work. His voice sounds so much like John Cale's that it's uncanny. Joel
It does sound like 'Master Bates'.
Beautiful ❤
Very touching. Wonderfully to the point: " We know Major Tom's a junkie !
Stunning.
Find the ship's what? >_>
Roger the cabin boy 😮
Oh Matron!!!
40 years ago I discovered The Blue Nile. 40 years later I Love this Life.
This show is a little bit before my time so I remember hearing the urban myths and believing them. I was told there was a "Master Bates", "Seaman Staines", "Pirate Willy" (sometimes told as "Big Willy the Pirate"), and "Roger the Cabin Boy". Turns out only one of those was real (except I'm not so sure he was ever called "Big Willy the Pirate", just "Pirate Willy"), but it's so easy to see how the myth could spread. Pirate Willy being real and eliciting a few giggles and a few kids mishearing Master Mates as Bates and then along the line someone must have asked "what's the other seaman's name?" and someone says "I think Staines" and they giggle and start telling everyone the name of the other pirate ("Seaman Staines" was actually Pirate Barnabas). And then someone was like "And there was the cabin boy's name, what was it?" and a kid is about to say "Tom" but then decides on "Roger" and laughs to himself. And then a myth is born. The myth probably started within a month of the show's first airing, because you know how kids are.
I think there was an article about it too, making shit up
Pretty sure I saw this when it went out live, because I recalled it immediately. I remember being lucky enough to get tickets to see Blue Nile at what was the Colston Hall (now Bristol Beacon) on their last tour. They were utterly beautiful, but so modest with it. It’s so sad that they’ve not toured since. I’d happily go see them anywhere I could get to. I hope that they are well and thriving at whatever they’re doing now. Much missed.
Some people used to reckon The Magic Roundabout was full of drugs references! 😵💫 A shame the drivel about Captain Pugwash caused the collapse of The Sunday Correspondent, because they failed to check the facts of the story - ie it's rubbish! 🤨
But captain pugwash is sexual as pugwash is an old naval term for oral sex fact
That her niece was under the trapeze seems unwise. I hope she wasn’t badly hurt.
Sublime. 💫
Stunning vocals.....up there with Brian ferry and David sylvian
Dad ist ja aus meiner Kindheit von Spaß am Montag 😂😭.
Stunning. Words cannot express the pain and beauty in this song, the sadness and the joy......beautiful.
I was watching it on the Internet Archive just now and I genuinely thought that was his name
I wasn't aware of any controversy I just watched it for fun.
One of the rare, few men, who can bring you to the verge of tears, with his voice, words, melodies and music.
A beautiful singer. I could listen to him read the phone book.
Paul Buchanan is a great musician I'm puzzled as to why I never knew of back in the 80s. He and Blue Nile were/are fantastic, and so is this rendition of Major Tom.
This is a beautiful version of this classic song
I love Paul Buchanan: great performer
Simply brilliant.
I must admit I prefer Paul's other cover on the night off ' I Can’t Give Everything Away' and I have heard somewhere Paul had to be persuaded to do this song also but it's excellent stuff still. He's always excellent thou.
Paul added more pathos.
Leave it out pal it is bullshit cover
Genius song sung by a voice of gold
Espetáculo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Paul Buchanan has an extraordinary ability to write and sing with such beauty. Quite how both Paul and The Blue Nile are not acknowledged for their music is one of the great mysteries of the modern world.
I so agree. Love listening, drinking my wine, and sobbing so happily. lol
I can kind of understand why John Ryan got upset by those jokes but come on, with a name like Master Mate (and the way Peter Hawking's said it) you must have seen the jokes coming.
I remember someone telling me that the cabin boy was called Roger, when I told him he was wrong because I have the tapes and he's called Tom. He told me I was wrong and was hearing things. There is a myth that there are lots of rude joke in captain Pugwash. I have some of the original episodes. Master Mate is the only one I know of. I'm not easily offended, I love dark humour, especially Bo selecta, but my mum only likes feel good stuff. If you like darker stuff try watching the Ren and Stimpy show, or some 70's and 80's TV programmes if you can find them. People today are complainy pants anyway. Were way too offended these days, everything fun is being ousted. 25 years ago all the good stuff was on TV, Now were stuck with Dr' who and Peppa pig. If I was going to watch Dr' Who, I would go to an antique shop and get the 70's originals. TV is going down hill, there now even considering having a female Bond. All the good stuff is not, "Un fashionable!" There is no Ronald McDonald any more, thanks to super size me!
Actually the word "wank" has effectively been used in "Goodnight Sweetheart". Not the actual word, of course, but some character who's incapable of pronouncing his "R's" properly saying "You outrank me". Comedy is often littered with similar puns.
To be blessed with such a voice!
It’s Master Mate. “Master Bates” is part of an urban legend.
Indeed... The writer of Pugwash even won a libel case against The Guardian over it
It's still funny though. I know his name is Master Mate but still John Ryan could have picked a better name that didn't sound rude if you misheard it, like Ben Dover.
@@Nakeethus_Hunter I think he successfully sued 2 newspapers....dunno which ones they were...a student rag was also blamed for upsetting John Ryan intensely!
"Who left their breeches in my cabin ??" "Seaman Staines, cap'n "
I clearly remember "Master Bates". It may have been written as Mates in the script, but who has never heard narrators having a little fun. Roger the Cabin boy (not Tom) appeared in more than one episode. Shag the Dog, and Flay Sho the Cunning Linguist (captain of a Chinese junk) also appeared over the years, but these reels can't be found. Lost in the fire, or floods, of 1966 or whenever.
Not true. Urban myth. It was never ever Master Bates or Roger
Why is Roger the cabin boy dirty?
@@grog3514well mate, to “roger the cabin boy “, is a double entendres, a bit like, first mate, seaman stains, and master bates, does this help
I love those other characters that I have never heard of but I’m chuckling at the thought of them now especially Fla Sho, and Shag the Dog is just brilliant lol thanks for making me laugh my bag off
He really dropped the ball on this night. Paul was one of my faves.
I'm sure this was deliberate - In one episode, a character says ( In reference to a large sea creature they caught ) "Cor, what a whopper ! Can we handle that ?"
And? What is your point? Any fisherman would say something like that.
@@lennyweb3178all my lovers must have been fisherman so lol😂😂
Master Bates was a Seaman
sheer vocal power
For everything that life was worth the fallen snow, the virgin birth yes, I can see you standing in mid-air. I can see you standing in mid-air.
!
Just absolutely beautiful yet so simple. The greatest voice to come out of Scotland.
Was this show really for kids? XD
Yes, the show was real. However, many of the names i.e 'Roger the Cabin Boy', 'Seaman Stains' were either changed or simply urban myths. There is a sexual term that uses 'Pugwash', but it's also 'a shoal', in reference to a reef near the mouth of the harbour. You can see how this might attract double entendre's.
@@francisohare3299 They were urban myths as John Ryan successfully sued the Sunday Correspondent and The Guardian in a liable case in 1991
Huh?? Ive had it wrong all these years.....Master Mate?? But there the other one aswell, seaman staines isnt there??
No. It was all a myth. Master Mates was the only one. Seaman Stains, Roger the cabin boy and all the other made up names did not exist.
@@lennyweb3178 I see!!! Thank you for the clarification........I had believed that myth for decades lol
@@SA77888 If you look into it ,it actually kind of ruined the writers life. It was totally innocent, yes it had a character called Master Mates but he didn't intend it to sound like Masterbates. It was some comedian in the 70's who started it, I have forgotten his name now but he was doing stand up and because one of the characters was called Master Mates he made up the rest of the names and it just caught on. That is how it started.
WOW! I am knocked out by this. Excellent.
Nahh
This brings my extroverted, caring, crazy mum to me... Not shoulder to shoulder, but her cradled in my arms. In my heart ❤️ forever
The same for mine
So when does Seaman Staines make an appearance?
He doesn't it was all a myth. Made up nonsense.
He never did
Usually after Master Bates
@@Lord_Skepticrogered the cabin boy lol
This is beautiful. You can tell he is an awesome guy too.
How lovely this was ....thankyou
Thank you.
