Are boken historically used for sparring?
yes, since the muromachi period ( 1366-1600 ). Before that they would only use katanas, even to spare, which had 2 major issues : the katanas would dent and break, and it was really expensive to fix them, but the biggest one was that most fights would end up in lifetime injuries and death. To avoid that, they used bokken to show skillmanship, especially by mutilating the opponent ( chopping noses, ears and fingers ) when used to face off other schools or challengers, but a lot of fights would end up with death too ( a blow to the head is most likely a kill, just like a baseball bat ). Before that period it was used by kids before they were 6-10 years old, when they would start sparing with real swords. Life expectancy was pretty short for samurais, even when they were not in wartime.
@@grandvizir The videogame Kengo: Master of Bushido, is set in the Genroku period, your character is a samurai in training, you join one of the several dojos, he trains and do sparring with a boken, once you graduate, you can can challenge rival schools, the fights are also done with wooden swords, and there's a chance (random) of killing the school's master during the duel. If that happens, the students of that school will try avenge their master with real swords in hand, so you will have to fight for your life, and this time you get to use your real sword. The shinai was invented to further avoid serious injuries. Even with the bougu padded training armour, the boken can still hurt pretty bad.
@@Xerxes1688 gonna check the game out, it definitely seems to be “inspired” from the historical of musashi, the most famous samouraï, against the yoshioka family clan dojo. He killed the 2 elder adult brothers, very respected and skilled samuraïs, and the members of the school went for revenge. Some records show that he fought up to 70 opponents at once, which I don’t believe at all lol but there was definitely a battle where he fought 4 to 10 opponents, which is still incredible ( even sneaking on a couple of them, and he did hahaha ). He did that by age 20 ! But to the point of duels, yes even with today’s equipment and kendo rules you can get hurt, and if you ask any practitioner if they would ever spare seriously with a Bokken and plain clothes they would laugh, it’s just like getting hit with a baseball bat, a hit to the head and you’re most likely dead from the sequels in the next days…
@@grandvizir I have a feeling what you’re saying starts with some truths but kinda derails a bit. Before the muromachi period, so during the Heian and kamakura periods, Samurai made up the majority of the army and only during the late kamakura period after the mongol invasions did they begin to use more conscripted peasants. Because of this they didn’t actually die too often during sparring. While they were obscenely rich and could afford multiple swords, it is far more likely they would order a very cheaply made blunt sword from a swordsmith to spar with. (Think of a kazaridachi kind of quality) Now even though the extent/ease of a katana’s damage is pretty over exaggerated due to people not knowing the tons of niku left on period blades, they still wouldn’t have wanted to damage them on something as mundane as sparring practice. They still valued realism at the time and wanted to get as close as they could to a real fight so cheaply made swords that roughly fit the dimensions of their sword were most likely used. This could’ve still resulted in injury and possibly even death but not extremely common compared to sharp swords. Now this also isn’t the rule, I’m sure somewhere there was a particular clan or school that wanted their samurai to practice with real blade but you have to keep in mind that is the exception. And no children did not spar with live blades in their teens. Samurai were a warrior class expected to fight at that top of their game in battle and there’s just no way they would’ve risked death for their children. This likely comes from the fact that children were given real blades but for test cutting and learning proper form/edge alignment. The Samurai class was a highly valued part of the military and society, especially before the muromachi period, so if they really died often from all out live blade sparring and had short life expectancies then daimyo would’ve really cracked down on it much sooner. What good is a ruling class to run the country if they keep dying over small sparring matches? And even when they had bokken they were still *sparring* not trying to kill each other. There’s something called control that we still have to use in todays sparring. (Also idk what you mean by mutilating their opponents when you also said they were using bokken. Maybe you phrased it weird or I just can’t read lol)
@@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 that’s why I said since the muromachi period, before that Japan was pretty peaceful and the numbers of soldiers were ridiculous, that’s how up until the muromachi period you could have an army of 0.05% of the population ( the nobles and landlords kids, less than 5000 compared to the 5 millions inhabitants ). Same with samurais, they didn’t exist before the muromachi period, as you said it was exclusively noble houses ( kondei and bushi, not samurais yet since they were mostly nobles by blood and not by skill since they were t a lot of wars to prove yourself and be granted titles and land )and the sword skills weren’t used or popular at all compared to later times. If we take the example of musashi, the first official and certified duel and kill, so most likely to death, was before he was 13 ( sources put it between 11-13, definitely before 15 ). If he went to war ( not proven but commonly accepted ) he would have been 16, the biggest battle in the history of Japan. And his major fights were before 30, after that duels were ceremonial and arranged by high ranking officials, never personal. And even when it was “sparring” with bokken or blades it was very common to die, there are numerous recollection of ceremonial sparring that ended in death, with Bokken and swords. When at war kids get involved too, ieyasu Tokugawa was 17 when he went to war with 25000 man… And yes, your point is not only valid but historically accurate, the muromachi period was unstable politically because family trees disappeared due to young offsprings dying before the senior members who had less to prove by fighting and were more recognized as administrators, hence way more valuable in times of war. Not only that, the more powerful houses had to send more and younger kids to battle. Average age for first battles is 15 ( if there is a war going on of course ), and although more uncommon there are recollections of age 11 on the battlefield… majority was 14-15 at the time, and conscription started at age 14 noble or not. For the mutilating part, that how dojo teachers and trainees would settle disrespect. Killing someone in an organized school vs school ( the sparring The op is referring to I believe ) was seen as poor sword skill. But to prove absolute superiority was to “cut” off ( or shred, as you wish ) extremities in a bokken sparring, especially the facial ones : nose, eyes, ears and jaw. It would mark the loser for life and would be considered good press for your school, and also a free living walking brutal advertisement of your dojo… if you were a wandering samurai fighting schools for glory, you would choose the weapon and although it was supposed to be a sparring none of the participants would expect to walk out alive or at least without permanent injury, it was a serious matter and people would wager their lives for it obviously, winning means regional fame for the winner, a title and a job as teacher or ranking official, and the end of you dojo and sword style for the master. Plenty of reasons to kill if you ask me.
