F'hir a bhata (The Simon Fraser Collection #104)
This is a wee Sunday afternoon project.
Thanks to IMSLP I managed to get my hands on a very old copy of The Simon Fraser Collection. I had a look at some of the tunes and decided to play his version of this one.
I used my Low F whistle, along with an octave shifter to get the super-low notes for the "left hand" on the piano.
From the appendix of the book:
No. 104 - This air sings delightfully and expressively in Gaelic. The parties to the words were seemingly persons above the ordinary rank. Whether the lady alludes to the cabin of his vessel, or boat, or to some apartment of her lover's residence, called the green chamber, she mentions her delight at being there, where the best society met, ...

The Pretty Apron (Scottish pipe march) (wooden flute)
For some time I've had difficulties finding motivation to practice or mostly play at any time other than a session. Sometimes not even then. For many weeks I've only taken my flute or whistles out of of their case for our weekly session in Oviedo. Inspired by @GogsTurnbull 's winter project (ruclips.net/video/4a 9ZbMKT8/видео.html), I decided to learn a new tune and make a wee video of it. No b...
The Munster Cloak (Marcos Llope D flute)
This is the tune of the month of the Irish Flute Players FB Group. I always knew this tune as "Spanish Ladies" or the "The Spanish Cloak", but apparently it's mostly known as "The Munster Cloak". I'm playing with with a gorgeous 5-key D flute made of lemon tree wood by Marcos Llope in Asturies, which I only received a couple of hours ago. Still getting used to it, but it's a beast!
Inisheer (Wooden Flute & Whistle)
[ENG] I woke up this morning humming Inisheer, which I hadn't played for quite a while, so I decided to make a wee video. The tune was written by Thomas Walsh, accordionist from Dublin, in the 1970s. I learnt it from Katherine Macleod, one of my whistle tutors at the Glasgow Folk-Music Workshop when I first started learning the instrument a few years ago. She also wrote the harmony. Flute: Jil ...

Happy New Year! This is the "Irish Flute Players" FB group tune of the month (January 2022). Played on a Henry Wylde 8-key flute made in London some time between 1838 and 1852. I really like it but find it quite difficult to play and tune, so I don't play it much. You can probably tell I was struggling towards the end there.

This morning I received my new McManus ebonite D whistle. A friend asked me for a video so he could hear it and here's me fulfilling the request. Just a very quick thing, one take. Lately I've been struggling when recording myself so I've made this one while trying not to overthink it. :) These are a couple of Scottish tunes, composed by Alexander Walker (1819 - 1900), from Aberdeenshire. I hop...

Some moments in life deserve a tune. The possibility of regaining some sort of normality is one of them. Here's a tune to mark my second jag, which should hopefully allow me to play tunes with people again. Quick recording made with my phone, don't expect much :)
Emma (Traditional waltz from Finland/Vals finlandés)
[ENG] Lately I've been meaning to broaden my musical horizons and learn more about music from other traditions. I'm quite curious about Scandi music so a couple of days ago I got Vicki Swan's book of Scandinavian Fiddle Tunes. The second tune in the book is this this beautiful waltz from Finland. I have a very special relationship with the country, I studied over there, still keep friends and a...

[ENG] I first heard this gorgeous tune played by Scottish fiddler Lauren MacColl on her album Strewn with Ribbons. The tune turned out to be very old, looks like it was first published in the William Morrison's "Collection of Highland music, consisting of strathspeys, reels, marches, waltzes & slow airs", published in 1813. It's listed as "a St.Kilda Song". I decided to give that version, origi...

[ENG] Today is Mother's Day in Spain. I usually get it mixed up with Mother's Day in the UK... This year I got it right so I wrote a wee tune as a present for my mum.

Here's another wee tune that I wrote. After recording the Dog and the Quilt I was propmtly reminded that we have another dog and she also deserved a tune. She loves chasing lizards so here it goes :) This is also an experiment. I had never recorded anything with "proper" equipment. Just got a microphone and a wee audio interface for my PC and tried using it today. My other microphones were not ...

Here's a quirky little tune I wrote yesterday. I was trying to come up with a name, heard one of my family members calling the dog and decided it would be a nice wee tune for him. He loves jumping on the beds and always messes with the quilts, hence the name. This is the first tune I've recorded with the lovely Killarney Brass D whistle that I got a couple of weeks ago. Nice wee instrument. If ...
La Cascada de Friera

[ENG] There's a little cascade in the area where I'm from in Asturias. It's called the "cascada de Friera" because it's a cascade that's in a halmlet called Friera. I always enjoy going there when I have the chance so I decided to write a little tune about it. The tune tries to describe the route you take when visitng the cascade. First you go uphill for a wee while, then walk a bit more with t...
Yanni Goes Folkie

Lately the Glastur gang seem to have been challenging ourselves to write some new tunes. I started humming what has become this little reel while listening to a track by one of my favourite composers and pianists, Yanni. Hence the name, "Yanni Goes Folkie". I hope you enjoy it :)
The Last Train from Loughrea (Comp. Vicent Broderick) (Low F Whistle)
Lately I've been looking into Vincent Broderick's compositions. This is the one I've been learning today. I believe it was written to commemorate the closure of Loughrea's railway station. The rythm kinda reminds me of a train! Loughrea is a town in County Galway. Low F whistle made by Colin Goldie.

Excelente!!! Felicitaciones
Buenísima David!!. Apúntatela para El Cuervo!!😊😊😊😊😊
Beautiful tone and style.Just wondering are Marcus flutes easy to play? Cheers Jim.
Nice playing! Love those Goldies.
Trying to learn about different types of flutes and whistles. I thought this looked like an irish flute... but it's a low whistle? Are irish flutes and tin whistles the same thing?
The main difference is that whistles have a fipple mouthpiece, somewhat similar to a recorder. Meanwhile, Irish flute is similar to a normal concert flute, so you hold it horizontally and shape the airstream with your lips so that it hits the embouchure hole the correct way. This is way more difficult than whistle and recorder where even a child can make a sound on first try. Irish flutes are often made out of wood and can be keyless with 6 fingerholes like the whistle, or then can have keys to allow playing extra notes.
I really like this arrangement. Is the music something you can share - I already have sheet music and I can play for the basic session notes but I would like to "up" my game with this arrangement.
Hi @Ubertubermeister. The variations are something I came up with on the stop. I never play it in the exact same way twice.
@Ubertubermeister u have 2 ears m8
Muito lindo! Teria partitura para compartilhar ?

Enorme!!!
Nicely done David! Great recording setup too.
Nice tune. Yet another i have never heard.
I love this tune but can’t find the sheet music. Can you help?
Hi Ann. Sorry, I lost the music for this arrangement shortly after I made the video. I no longer have it.
Brilliant! I've been wanting to learn this tune, but have sea lion flippers when I play it!
So good. Watched it like 5 times lol
I love this tune! Great rendition
Marvelous!
Absolutely lovely harmony! 😍🎶
Beautiful. Such a lovely song. Great job!
Alegre melodía!!
I had a day off and FINALLY learned the last part of this after a year.
Nada! Saludos :)
@@soydavidfm Un saludo! ;)

This is beautiful!! I’ll be listening to this and learning it from your version. So lovely with both whistles too! I don’t have an F yet though. It’s on the list.
Thank you! I’m glad you like it 🙂
¡Preciosa canción! ❤ Muy bien interpretada 👏👏
Gracias!
Beautiful tune and great vibrato! Are you basically wobbling your breath to achieve that effect?
Hi Carlos, yes, sometimes I do diaphragmatic vibrato.
This is beautiful!
Maravillosa melodia!!!👏👏
This is beautiful! Just found your channel. I love your uploads!
That's very kind, thank you so much!
Wow that whistle has an amazing sound!!! Fantastic tune!
Superb David, beautifully played and harmonised. You've certainly mastered the technical side of things.
Thanks John! Definitely didn't master the tech stuff, it took me so long!!! 🙈
by any change you would do a particular lesson to teach it ?
Que bonita y alegre la canción....." La farmacéutica "!!!!
¡Me encanta esa!
¡Gracias! 😊
Bravo!!!!
Very nice tune and playing. What st whistle is it?
It's a Killarney Brass D
Wow very nice tune! I like it! there is a new Facebook group started by a member of thesession that is for compositions, you are more than welcome in this group David! the name of the group is Tunesmiths: Composers of instrumental folk tunes.
That’s grand! Just joined, thanks 🙂
I really like your tune. Great job! 👏
Thanks!
excellent tune, really conveys the sound of the cascade.
Very nice playing and whistle, David.
That's a neat little tune :)
Beautifully played! 😊
What brand of flute? Thanks.
Hi Catie. It's a 6-key pratten model made by George Ormiston in Scotland.
