Coach Education is Broken - Episode 7 - 'Deconstructed Delivery'
What have a lemon meringue pie and coach education got in common?
In this episode, I talk about how we can deconstruct coach education to help make coach education more 'learner-centred'. I explain the limitations of existing delivery methods and outline ways that we can work towards models that allow for more individualised learning pathways.
I explain how a shift away from qualifications towards a professional standards framework offers greater flexibility and transferability across various coaching roles and activity domains allowing for a more dynamic and effective workforce.

    'High performance ' as Jonny wilkinson says, and I would agree, is 'total engagement ' in what you are doing. That can be done with anything you do. The fact I'd have to prove I could, or have worked with 'high performance ' athletes in order to take a certain level shows, in my mind, a misunderstanding of what high performance actually means. Just because someone is good at something it doesn't mean they are high performance and just because someone has a level 5 coaching badge it certainly doesn't make then that either. It's all labels , granted I don't have the answers but yes, it's all labels.

    Over my 30+ years in tennis, id say a huge percentage of coaches who are not head coaches , are only there while they are studying. It's a nice way for them to earn a bit while they do a degree and then get a 'real job'. Head coaches here (Australia) have to pay so much rent It's ridiculous and it to me is not an attractive proposition. So to your point about retaining good coaches there seems no way a club would actually pay a 'retainer', the head coach is under pressure to make rent so pays the assistance low rates which makes it again not an attractive position for the long term,..and round and round we go! Love the channel , keep up the good work, cheers from Perth!

    Ben Shapiro alt right? Ben Shapiro talk about religion? Look I am your fan but you are very wrong on both your comments. Ben is Jewish but a political commentator who never talks about religion. Now alt-right, a jew alt-right? Really?so as academic I class yourself as far left woke progressive? I think you should stick to sports science. You know nothing about Mr Shapiro, nothing about Jews, nothing about American politics. Honestly stick to sport

    I’ve used a similar approach with players by asking, ‘What did you see that led to your decision?’ The answer usually explains what the player did and to explore the situation further I’ll often ask, ‘Did you notice this or that?’, particularly when it is relevant to what I might be trying teach players to recognise, e.g. a cue to look for when teaching players when it’s on to make a wall pass. Just thought I’d share that with you.

    Great conversation. I wonder how much of a negative influence the historical nature of 2 touch has on peoples opinions of this constraint. It was the dominant, over used constraint in what was typically a very instructional old school football coaching culture. Is this a bias? I do believe there is a place for it in that as Stu raises, in football, holding onto the ball is a major attractor. My belief is this is both a social piece- society over values individual skills so this is what young kids think good looks like (how many passing coaches do you see on Insta vs. Skill coaches). Information wise- making a pass requires so much more information processing then just running head down with the ball. The 2 touch constraint in the right context can balance out the major head down dribble forward attractor (some ying to the yang) and I then always see much more scanning. Because they can’t just head down run. For context I coach >U11 grassroots. So very early development where dare I even say, block un contested practice has some validity.

    I coach in an EFL league one club academy U11 so will try this. Topic is defending from the middle third. Like the idea of dripping the limitations in and then I will aim to slowly take those limitations back away and use it like a dynamic whole part whole model.

    I've called them "superpowers". Everybody on your team has at least one thing they are great at. Could be physical skills (shooting, passing, defending), mental skills (game visiin, tactics), or emotional skills (positive attitude, selfconfidence). As coach, identify them, highlight them to the player, and use them as examples to teammates. Conversely, players will also have "kryptonites". Weaknesses in their play, knowledge, or even character. Again, identify them, highlight them to the player (gently, as works ons), and maybe pair them up with teammates who have that superpower.

    I came across this in 'Early Years' (EYFS) education some years ago and it struck a real chord. The context was that rather than praising a child for washing their hands after going to the toilet, one should say something like 'You've washed your hands'. The rationale was that the child would process what they had done,they would then continue to do it as a good thing to do in itself, rather than doing it primarily as a means to get praise. Then the absence of the adult in the future would not impact the inherent merit of the action.

    Love it Stu. Would like to know more about how to deal with parents who think they know better without understanding the context of the session or playing in "game time" What may look rubbish to the parents is probably the chaos of learning in a real time situation. For a young coach its hard not to be undermined by some well meaning parents who only end up confusing the moments.

    Really good to hear this. I have been doing this in my sessions for a couple of years now, started out in football and then applied the same to handball. I love using cones as counters for score because we are never short on cones 😅 I also use cones as a feedback tool and for fun. So cone on the head, hand, foot anything where it can stay off the floor, always good fun, then you can add tennis balls in, gosh I could go on and on. Great video!

  • @michaelcrane1654
    @michaelcrane1654 4 года назад

    Stuart used your idea with cones tonight but I said they where Fifa coins. Gave coins out for good decisions, when to pass and when to dribble. At the end of the game if they won they could trade the coins and buy a player from the other team. U7s and U9s really enjoyed it plus intensity was great as advised.
