A Sydney/Bathurst-based Brit exploring the NSW Railway System (and more) since 2016.
Most of my content revolves around NSW Railway films, released under the 158 Films banner. These include:
- Regular films (6+ mins)
- Quickie films (5 mins or less)
- The Bathurst Volumes series
- Wild West Chases
You'll find a mix of trains here and plenty of history too. Passenger, freight, heritage and more; I film the lot!
Occasionally, I also upload content outside the world of trains, including LEGO builds, the odd Thomas the Tank Engine video and other projects that aren't any of those things.
Films are released on a "when they're ready" basis, but I aim for one every few weeks at least.
Enjoy the journey!

TheBritFromOz 2024 Awards (2024 In Review)
The annual BritFromOz 2024 Awards ceremony, recognising the great, the good, the new, the old and the crap of this channel's work in 2024.
Over the course of this film, I award sixteen awards to recognise what I loved and what I didn't about this year. Once again, these awards are all completely arbritary (apart from "Highest Ratings"), but I like it more than a straight compilation. For once though, I've got it out before the end of the year!

Are you doing more lachlan valley railway and the picnic train footage
Yes I have been waiting for this since last year, I love these keep up the great work
That ricketty and partly burnt out building near the Pitnacree Road bridge has been there in that condition for years. I'm surprised it hasn't been blown over in one of the frequent summer storms. East Maitland is certainly a location where it is easy to waste a few hours watching trains!
Thanks and a Merry Xmas to you!
Happy Xmas mate and thanks for the vids
I wonder if they will be like the Spanish Trams which suffered from Cracking Chassis
Apparently some XPT sleeper cars will be overhauled
They did say XPTs will remain in service for long after the roll out of these so I assume they’ll use XPTs for night time Melbourne - Sydney and Sydney to Brisbane services, and the Civitys for all other times.
The NRF looks like a class 700
The Hunter Railcars are only seventeen years old so they be classed as near new
Hi Do you know what locos are at cowra depot and orange east fork
The black building was built last year, probably for the metro electricity and the top managers building was renovated too, the shelter area also has been added The rest room is mostly locked
I live along the line to Port Kembla. I will be keeping an eye out for these new locos, it's also good to see that SSR has won another contract.
Excellent coverage of the changeover.
Interesting to see the sign on Bathurst platform "This Way To The Other Platform" as it used to be closed to the public? Will the Chinese built hoppers stand the test of time and reliability like the Australian built Ruwolt flour hoppers? Great collection.
The platform is still closed to regular passengers, but nobody’s bothered to remove the sign. Maybe because it’s part of the heritage listing, which would mean they can’t.
Hey there! Due to being an adult (and also not having access to a computer that can handle Sibelius, the software I used to use to create my music themes and cues), I don't really make videos anymore and only lurk. But I very much appreciate you using my music, and giving me credit to boot! Especially loved the expressiveness of your narration, the stop-motion aspects, and the cheeky TARDIS among other cameos and Easter eggs in the vid ;)
Hi What steam train rides do you film in 2024
@@jamesm2101 Nowhere near as many; I did record a few and hopefully might get a few more.
At Brewongle 1:42 the house at the top right, wasn't that the formers Stationmasters cottage? Where you filmed at Marrangaroo was the site of Newbolds Siding (opened 1913) which ran off the Down Main, it was used up until the late 1990's I think as a RIC ballast loading point. Opposite, used to be the Marrangaroo Wheat Siding which opened in 1918 used to store bagged wheat, it closed in 1921. Traces of the Newbolds Siding road (probably below where you were standing) can be seen in the long grass with a section of track still there. There was some history about Dargan too, but my memory fails me. Great video, the locations alone were the making!
Brewongle signal box was a casualty of the same resignalling scheme that dispensed with Raglan and Locksley in 1988. It was only occasionally used in its later years and was mostly 'switched out', making the section Raglan - Locksley. I was lucky enough to pass through one day in the early 1980s when the signal box was switched in for local trackwork. The SM's house survives opposite the site of the station. Nice choice of locations, it can be a tough chase through that area but the train speed was obviously low enough to make it achievable.
I am not into steam, but loved the shots of 4501 leading. Pity about the chatter in the background of some of your shots, but then again, it's hard to get away from people when steam is running! Great history narration too, I enjoy those, thank you.
Thank you 😊 4501’s definitely playing a supporting role in this film; it gets a leading role in Great Western Garratt though which will (hopefully) be out soon.
Another much enjoyed production, well done. About four or five years back I done a history walk at Sodwalls covering the length of the old route and the viaducts, kind permission was obtained from George, the property manager of the absent landowners. I might post a series of the still pictures I took covering the walk someday.
Nice video - Goninan is pronounced - GO - NIN - AN - there is no "Gone" in it.
That’s the first I’ve heard of that pronunciation.
Good video. That XPT is nice and smokey. I love the smell of burnt diesel in the morning.
Great history narration, I learned a few things from you, well researched. Looks like a good turn out of enthusiasts for the event. Just love the Bagpipes at the end of the video!
Qube's 8037 is the only member of their fleet to have two "Gemco" or "Coote" symbols on the side panel, suggesting a replacement panel has came from another locomotive. GM22 (1962) is actually 10 years younger, not five, than GM10 (1952) in caption at 7:42 mark. Another great variety of trains with lovely locations, I also hang out for the Bagpipes at the end too, I dips me lid to you, well done.
Thanks mate. Good stuff👍
Excellent collection there, at 9:43 I can see a Loading Bank on the Down Main side, that I presume is the old Bathurst "Stock Siding" remains?
I presume so - that’s an old sheep run there, heavily overgrown now. Until early last decade it had a siding of its own too. The sheep run is why I refer to that particular spot as “Lloyds Farm”.
@@TheBritFromOz008 I walked around that stock siding about four of five years back, I forget its proper name, I kept walking up to Orton Park where the passenger platform once stood.
I like that NSW TrainLink orange and yellow livery (3:58 mark), I think it would have suited the XPT but none have been painted in it and not likely to as their curtain begins to fall. Very enjoyable video, we are indeed blessed in western NSW to have such beautiful scenery. "Silver City Explorer" used to be the "Outback Explorer" when I last travelled on it three years back, rebranded. Great quality and variety from you once again.😉
There was concept art released of the XPTs & XPLorers in NSWTL livery; they even showed up as USBs you could buy onboard. I personally wasn’t a fan: It looked like an even more garish version of the Virgin/ LNER livery the East Coast Main Line HSTs had in their last years (which, contradictorily, I didn’t mind a bit). As for the “Outback XPLorer” or “Silver City XPLorer”, both are unused legacy names that have equally valid origins. “Outback XPLorer” was because it replaced the Outback Express of course, whilst “Silver City XPLorer” is after the Silver City Comet. I personally lean towards the latter as there’s a plaque at Broken Hill commemorating the commencement of the “Silver City XPLorer” and the current train reuses the Comet’s headcodes: W(P)45 & W(P)46.
Very enjoyable, a great variety of western line trains, well done!
Very enjoyable, especially the history narrations, I look forward to each one, you missed the history of Tarana Quarry which is quite interesting. I walked up to the quarry site a few years back with kind permission of the landholder. Of interest at 8:58 in the background is former "Granite Siding" site, to the direct left you can see the original single line embankment from the steam days. A lot of the gravel once used on Sydney suburban platforms came from Granite Siding. Great variety and well presented, thank you.
Jolly goods show there old boy! Really enjoyed your video, quality narration and well researched. There are some clips of 631/731 on my site if you are interested. Was Phil (Keg) driving the set? Another piece of Rydal railway history is that the night duty station assistant was shot dead by a deranged (drunk) local gunman outside the signal box door, a small garden and memorial plaque used to be on the platform in memory of the tragic event. His name was Noel Hawley, working at Rydal but from Lithgow, it happened in 1973.
Thank you :). I’m not sure quite who was driving the set on this occasion. The plaque and garden are still present on the platform next to the signal cabin. I did see them and got a photograph, but was unaware of the story behind them until after I made the film. It did strike me at the time that the man commemorated by the plaque was taken rather young. When I next make a video on Rydal, which I probably will at some point, I’ll be sure include it.
A huge shout out for making the effort to go out and film in those atrocious conditions. An excellent result!!
Awesome captures mate.
Noticed you haven’t narrated the last few videos Duck. Really enjoyed hearing your quick history lessons on locations. Hope it comes back mate.
It’ll be back don’t worry. Some bits of history don’t lend themselves to being narrated, which was true of virtually all the history in this film. The Bathurst Volumes don’t generally have narration as they’re quite history-lite: V43 was the exception.
I want my 4807 back it served the Junee to Griffith passenger service for decades along with frieght !
Great Video
I caught a train to Millthorpe in the early 1980s, so the station was still open then. I’m not sure when it closed but it could have been when the XPT service started in 1982, or possibly some time after. Nice cross section of Bathurst area traffic.
the QE's have the same looks as the operators that has these ones too.that includes SCT/pacific national/Whitehaven coal/ one rail & SSR. & progress rail.
All those are variants of the GT46Cace model of locomotive that Downer manufactures. Basically the same engine but with a few differences, the most obvious being the paint and the classifications.

Hi I was on the lvr transfer bathurst to orange east fork
Excellent production. In your text you say the first station was north of the current Scarborough, it was actually built 'south' of the current location. Clifton Tunnel is officially known as Coal Cliff Tunnel and is 1003 metres long. There is another single track section between Coal Cliff and Unanderra that being Coniston to Unanderra North Junction (a small section) And as pointed out the 1100 class at Clifton is a 1200 class
Thanks for those. I sourced the information on Clifton Tunnel from NSWRail.net, which gave me what you see in the film. It hasn’t been updated in a while I don’t think. Wasn’t aware Coniston to Unanderra North was single-line (I’ve just checked and that bit is - it’s paralleled by the lines in/ out of PK which probably threw me). As for the station being to the south, I can’t place where I got north from; I probably confused it with the second Clifton Station back in 2020 (a big portion of the history scripting was lifted from that film, which barely mentions the other Clifton, to save time). On reflection, south makes more sense as 673m north would put it very close to Clifton. Nice to know it did actually exist though as I’ve found virtually no other info or photos to confirm or deny it. This film was made in a hurry, so the history in particular didn’t get the same thoroughness I usually try and give it. Good to see that people actually watch the history portions as I thought a lot of people just skipped over them to get to more trains. Thanks for your corrections too; no doubt I’ll make a third Scarborough film in due course which will clear all this up! Would you be able to provide your sources? No doubt they’re a bit more thorough than mine.
The name of the 'Clifton tunnel' was officially changed to 'Coal Cliff Tunnel' in the Weekly Notice 10 of 1984. I have also heard it referred to as the 'Scarborough tunnel' The locations and name changing of the various 'Cliftons', 'South Clifton', 'Scarborough', and 'North Clifton' was very complicated. All this is explained clearly on page 25 of John Oakes book 'Sydneys Forgotten Illawarra Railways' @@TheBritFromOz008
The rail car shown at 04:56 is a 1200 class (not an 1100 class), which changes the possible date range by about a decade.
Thanks for that. That would narrow it down to 1970 - 1983 in that case.

So The Picnic Train owns 42107 - thanks. A caption about the locomotive ownership didn’t really fit anywhere in this film without being intrusive unfortunately so I left it out. I’d never heard of “B Rail” before making the earlier 5917 film either because I thought ‘07 was owned by Picnic Train - am I right in saying they’re one and the same?
cool video mate love it
