Biblical, systematic (required) tithes were not normalized to be received from earned wages or proceeds. Every compulsory tithe in the Bible was received from either the tithe of the land or the tithe of the herd. All consumable items. All from within Israel. And yes, money was widely traded and wages were earned during those times.

My parents go to Jubilee church in Washington. Both do. My dad did not always go to church with us, maybe 90% of the time he did not. He did not agree with the philosophy of the church meaning what they stood for. He was hurt many times by chruches in his life. My parents both started going to Jubilee in Washington. My dad LOVES going there. It is a joy to hear him talk about it. i have firm confidence both my parents are saved by observing their actions and how they talk about the church and what they are doing. I am thankful to Jubilee. This is a good message. It is real and honest. It should be shared by others to those that are on the fence or maybe they were also hurt by the church.

One of my big issue with slavery in the bible stems from Exodus 21:20-21. For context, this happens right after the 10 commandments and is a continuation of the laws given to Moses. For full transparency Exodus 21:20-21 (KJV) reads: 20 “And if a man beats his male or female servant with a rod, so that he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished. 21 Notwithstanding, if he remains alive a day or two, he shall not be punished; for he is his property. For a moment lets put aside the entire slavery issue. Here is my question "Is someone being property a good reason to not punish a Master for beating their slave?" Stated more bluntly, "Is some being property good justification to not punish the person assaulting them?" I have asked many this question, and for some odd reason it typically goes back to a biblical justification of slavery. Not to be rude, but to keep this conversation productive, if your response contains a reference to slavery beyond talking about the slave which was assaulted there is high probability your not answering my question. I do intend to connect this back to the slavery itself, but before laying all that bare, I want to ensure that can at least agree on a few things.

Hebrews were allowed to beat foreign slaves to near death, appalling anyone who would condone this bible law. Exodus 21:21:20 "If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, 21:21 but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.

You're pretty much ignoring what all the Old Testament has to say about slavery. If your title had been "Slavery and the New Testament" I probably wouldn't have even listened. Of course it would have been problematic for Paul to tell Christians to release all their slaves. They were under Roman rule at the time and Paul was a Roman! But why did early Christians like Philemon even own slaves in the first place? Because the Bible they had (the old Testament) told them that it was ok. It condoned the practice of slavery. So long as the slave wasn't a Hebrew. THIS is the slavery in the Bible. It's not an honest conversation on slavery in the Bible to simply say that in the NT they couldn't just free their slaves. So what? They wouldn't have even owned slaves in the first place if the OT hadn't told them that it was ok. THIS is where the issue and the question lies. Why did God Himself tell the Jews that they could own lifelong, generational chattel slaves if they wanted to? If they could just afford to buy them. That's the question. And it's the question that's completely ignored in this video entitled "Slavery & the Bible".

  • @cygnusustus

The Bible condones and commands chattel slavery. Chattel slavery is defined as "the enslaving and owning of human beings and their offspring as property, able to be bought, sold, and forced to work without wages" Another definition is: "The condition in which one person is owned as property by another and is under the owner's control, especially in involuntary servitude." Leviticus 25 precisely describes chattel slavery: "Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour." Under Mosaic law, foreign slaves were chattel slaves. They could be bought, sold, separated from their families, beaten, raped, killed, kept for life, and passed down as inherited property. Every reference to foreign slaves in the Bible is to deny them rights and protections afforded to Hebrew slaves. The treatment of foreign slaves was every bit was bad, or worse, than slavery in the Antebellum south. Foreign slaves were considered God's gift to the Israelites. Psalm 2:8 "Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession."

Hey Cygnus. I like the way you laid that out here. A couple of quibbles though. The Bible does not "command" slavery. You shouldn't say that because it simply isn't true. And under Mosaic law they could not be killed as you claim here. You should take that out. They specifically could not be killed. And they were not denied "every" right afforded Hebrews. Like even the foreign slave got the Sabbath off. And the beating limitations seems to have applied to both. I wouldn't say that whole sentence. Just say Hebrews got released and foreign slaves didn't. That's the whole point. And slavery in the Bible was not every bit as bad or worse than slavery in the Bible. In many ways it was exactly the same is all you have to point out. All someone has to do is point to the day off every week for foreign slaves in the Bible to show your statement as false. And personally I don't like the Psalms reference. This is poetry, not law.

And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee. And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath given thee." The Bible commands slavery. You shouldn't deny this, because it is simply true. "And under Mosaic law they could not be killed as you claim here." Cite the law stating the foreign chattel slaves could not be killed. "And they were not denied "every" right afforded Hebrews." Cite any verse granting any rights to foreign chattel slaves. "All someone has to do is point to the day off every week for foreign slaves in the Bible to show your statement as false." First, that is not stated explicitly anywhere. Also, the sabbath day was on obligation, not a right. "And personally I don't like the Psalms reference. This is poetry, not law." Too bad for you. It shows how the Israelites viewed slavery.

@@cygnusustus If you get into the Hebrew used in the Deuteronomy passage you mentioned, you'll understand that this is not talking about slaves or slavery. These people became vassals of Israel, not slaves of Israel. Two very different things. Look into it for yourself. I don't know if you can read Hebrew or not? But plenty of stuff out there that will walk you through it. "Cite the law stating the foreign chattel slaves could not be killed" Exodus 21:20; “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result" There is no distinction between foreign and Hebrew here. The law covers both. And in all fairness, please cite the law that says you can kill your foreign chattel slave? There isn't one. Which is why I pushed back on your claim. Look I'm on your side here. Does the Bible condone lifelong, generational chattel slavery? Yes. 100% yes. Does it "command" it, or say you can kill your slaves? No. "Cite any verse granting any rights to foreign chattel slaves" I did that in my first comment. They had a right not to be killed. They had the right to the Sabbath off (Exodus 23:12). They had the right not to be beaten so badly that you knocked out an eye or a tooth. They had the right, if they converted, to participate in the Passover meal. How do you not know this? You are simply taking your argument to far with this, and you don't need to. My only point. You've probably read dozens of my comments and discussions with Christians on this topic. You even replied to some. Not every push back or criticism is invalid. Not even to me.

"There is no distinction between foreign and Hebrew here. " The distinction is clear in Exodus 21:2. Exodus 21, pretty much the entire chapter, deals with how Hebrews should treat fellow Hebrews. "And in all fairness, please cite the law that says you can kill your foreign chattel slave? " Exodus 21 says you can beat your Hebrew slaves as long as they don't die within 2 or 3 days. Leviticus 25:44-46 says you can treat your foreign slaves more harshly. "I did that in my first comment. They had a right not to be killed." You cited no such law in your first comment. Stop lying, and cite your verse.

@@cygnusustus What are you talking about? You are taking this way to personally man. You referenced Deuteronomy 20:10-14 in support of your claim that the Bible "commands" slavery. I pointed out this passage does not make these people "slaves" but rather a vassal state to Israel. To which your response is Lev. 25:44-46? This has nothing to do with your claim of a "command" of slavery. I completely agree that the passages in Lev. describes chattel slavery. 100%. They just didn't come from Israels wars. These passages themselves tell you where they came from in verse 44. They were purchased from the nations around Israel. There's plenty of slavery in the OT man, it's just not "commanded" in the passages in Deu. as you claimed. All I'm saying. And Exodus 21:2-11 applies to Hebrew Indentured servants, I completely agree. But that doesn't mean that the remainder of the chapter also only applies to Hebrew to Hebrew. Take verse 12 for example. By your interpretation that only applies to Hebrew on Hebrew, and that Hebrews could freely kill any foreigner they want without any ramification. To be consistent with your argument you would have to conclude this. And almost nobody would agree with you on that. Which leads me to your complete failure to cite any verse that says you can kill your foreign slave. Which was your claim. You claim you can kill your foreign slave but have no verse in the Bible that says this. Because it doesn't. Anywhere. So why are you claiming it? Look, if you want to stand firm that 20-21 only applied to beating Hebrew slaves then fine. You think that. But that in no way means you're free to kill any foreign slave. One does not follow from the other. Not even the "rigor" line in Lev. So you really should stop saying this. And I did cite a law in my first comment. Stop lying.

Hebrews 9:15 defines what the New covenant was from..."the transgressions committed under the old covenant" It's odd you stopped short of that verse.

Turn to your neighbor and say: Modern christianity is false. It claims that people are redeemed from the curse of the old covenant law today. The law was only given to Israel and hasnt existed for nearly 2,000 years. No one alive today was ever "under the works of the law" and no one alive today was ever under its curse. Three questions: Were you ever part of the Old Covenant? Were you born subject to the Mosaic law? Did Christ redeem you from the curse of the law that Paul is referring to in Galatians 3? If any of your answers are "no" then they are all "no". Wake up and be self thinkers.
