It's a smart play kinda you attempt a 50 yard field goal turn it into a punt and if they muff the ball possesion is yours its not the worst trick play

Yes teams have done this many more times than once. That’s why it’s in there to for fringe long filed goals, that you’d rather trick them from returning it I guess.

Fake Field Goal punts are an actual thing that happens. Basically, it catches the defense out of position and helps flip field position.

There’s a part of the field called the dead zone where a lot of teams go for it on 4th cuz kicks would be 50+ yards and punts you’d like to average 40+ yards. A kicker wouldn’t have the leg for a drop kick (in theory) and might get you good field position

Teams do a fake field goal punt in the nfl it’s not that strange it’s just to make sure the other team doesn’t get a huge return

Um, it exists for the obvious reason of faking a long field goal attempt into a punt with no chance to be returned.

Fake field goal punt, in case you line up far and missing the field goal would result in the other team taking over at that spot... Or punt and put them deeper into their territory.

If you don't have faith that your kicker can make it from a long distance you would do this and try to pin them deep. As long as nobody's back there to return the punt you don't have to worry about them running it back
