First Hunt of the Year and Lots of Comb Tooth
This is my first decent mushroom hunt of the year. My "season" starts in the fall when the weather cools down and the rain returns. This was a great diverse mushroom foraging trip.

Ouachita Mountains - Eagle Rock Loop
Просмотров 3887 месяцев назад
On April 5th and 6th I did the 27ish mile Eagle Rock Loop that follows two different forks of the Little Missouri River. This is a super cool route climbing through the Ouachita Mountains in Western Arkansas with lots of running water.

Just a couple of mushroom harvests from a couple different places and times. I harvested shiitakes from logs I inoculated two years ago. Everything else is wild harvested.
Gila River Loop
Просмотров 199Год назад
This is a 37-mile loop that I hiked in June 2023. I went off trail a time or two, and Alltrails has been known to be a little off with their mileage. I wound up getting 46 miles in 2 1/2 days. This is a beautiful area.

Seed Saving /Okinawan Pink Okra / Start to Finish
Просмотров 4552 года назад
Back in September of last year I got a spur of the moment idea that I would save the seed from my Okinawan Pink okra that I was growing for food. I wanted to use it as a teaching tool to people who maybe had never saved okra seed or any type of seed. I felt confident doing this because I have saved okra seed so many times in the past and did not expect to see anything new that I hadn't experien...

Rehydrating Crunchy Wood Ears

Here's a quick demonstration of rehydrating wood ears that have dried out naturally right on the logs that they were growing on. This is pretty cool!

The Red Torch Mexican Sunflower and the Wild Sunflower
Really cool! Never seen the coralliodes before!
Thanks a bunch! I see them but they're usually pretty funky when I do. I find a lot more of the lion's mane here.
What a cool haul! First time seeing one of your videos with so many of that frilly variety. I always love when you run into those puffballs. They remind me of marshmallows 😄 That seemed like a nice fall weather day. Happy mushroom hunting season!
I think it's the most I ever found in one day. I just got done cooking a big batch of soup with a lot of the puffballs. I wish they were more spread out over the season because I finally had to stop picking them. They actually have a marshmallow texture sometimes. The season is on, Thanks!
Those are some pretty mushrooms.
Thanks, they tasted good too! I do think the comb tooths are one of the coolest looking ones yet.
Sweet haul, it's neat to see what grows in different regions. Looks like a great day for getting out there, nice intro also. Cheers and peace and positivity to everyone.
Thanks Metal! This did my mind and soul some good. I have some more mushroom videos coming your way, that's all I've been doing lately
I found a couple small hen of the woods but they died off because we didn't have enough rain. Hopefully it's not too wet here in Missouri and hopefully I'll still find some on my next day off. Hens are definitely my favorite next to morels. I just fry up the hens like they were morels and they are better tasting than morels.
Some of the first ones I have ever found had that happen here in central Arkansas. It gets so hot and dry here. But I found this one in late November or maybe even early December. I've been checking that sight every week when possible. I have yet to find the morels but I sure want to! Best of luck finding your's!
I have not yet found a way to cook hens that make it super tasty as everyone says. Lions mane is prolly my fav.
Interesting, it may not be the mushroom for you then. I love the lions but I'm hit and miss with cooking them right. I'm not much of a cook and I will eat almost anything
What is the music you use for your videos? It's really nice!
Thanks! I try to use cool stuff when I edit. I don't remember the names of any of the songs but I'm using Power Director to edit and they have a pretty decent collection of music to use.
Ha Ha funny Butt Crack mushroom 😄 Man, that’s an amazing find, that maitake mushroom. I didn’t even know that they grew wild in the U.S. The maitake mushrooms in the store that I’ve seen are always past their prime and stink, so I’ve never had an opportunity to eat a fresh one. Thanks for taking the time to show cooking it up. Such a huge specimen that you found too - so cool!
I wish you had of been around, I would like to see if it met the Vegan seal of approval! It really did add that "something" to whatever and was super filling. I love finding those butt cracks too, I've been lucky to find some nice specimens of some killer mushrooms now and again. Yeah the hens are native to the eastern half of the country it seems and I'm not sure if the same species is native in Asia too or if they just absolutely fell in love with it over there and started culturing it like crazy.
amazing brotha! great find super jealous of your lions mane
Hopefully I can start finding them again soon this season. Thanks man!
That's a monster haul, nice one man. There is Chicken of the Woods in B.C. where I am but I haven't heard of Hen of the Woods which doesn't mean it's not around I'm just not familiar with it. This year has been amazing for Chanterelle mushrooms like I have never seen. Good video and peace and positivity to everyone.
Thanks Metal! I'm not sure if they're up in NW but I was starting to think that they weren't in our swampy area but started finding a couple ruined ones around. This one was right under my nose and I keep checking that tree. I think your chanterelle situation crushes ours but I did see one of the most awesome flushes in Little Rock area this year. Some looked as big as my fist but I didn't harvest them because they were on the trail in the park (kinda against the rules there I think)
So, back in September I noticed a lions maine on a trail I run on. My wife and i harvested it, was about 2 servings worth. Talk about delicious!
That's awesome, yall must have got it right! I haven't found much of anything going into the fall just yet but feeling optimistic about today. I'm going later. I thought about you about a month ago, saw a sign that mentioned the C & O trail, didn't realize I was even in Maryland. Didn't you tell me once you were in the neighborhood of that trail?
@paxtianodirtfrog8947 that's correct! I live in Montgomery County, and hit the C&O often, it's a great park to have so close to home.
🎉❤ old school Geocache'
Thanks! I still find chickens here too!
We have those yellow sunflowers all over California
Really?! that is so cool, are they wild there?
Job well done, that's an amazing mushroom and very tasty.
I love the lion's mane but I don't always get it right when I cook them. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Everyone should appreciate your honesty.
Thanks, I try to keep it real. Especially with the mushrooms because I want everyone to be safe.
Its a bit small
It is, I've been thinking of doing another video about those things. It has it's place though and is fun.
I was wondering why it tastes like wood....
I want to try this again with some really fresh ones.
There as beautiful and as temporal as a rose but much more filling
This has got to be one of the prettiest things I find in the woods. I'm glad you liked it!
Wow those are some great big sunflowers 😅
U shud try a hammock if u r not comfortable in a tent. Thx for vid. I’ll do trail this fall wen it cools off
I have been wanting to try the hammock but haven't bought one yet. So much gear I want to play with. It's cooler now, I hope you got to hit the trail!
@ Not yet, I’ll go within the next couple of months. If u wanna go again let me know, I can do it with u. I’ll bring u a hammock set up to try. I’ve never done that trail
@@ST-hs7vz That sounds cool, I'm gonna have a hard time getting there in the next couple months but I definitely want to repeat it and want to try out a hammock. Hopefully our schedules with match up when you get ready! Finally got some rain and water in the creeks
Thanks for your video. I have been wanting to do the ERL for a couple years. I am glad you talked about the anxiety the first day of a backpacking trip. I deal with that as well. I am glad to know that I am not the only one.
Nope, definitely not the only one! I think it's part of the ride though, makes you work for the real thing. I love my stove but it's definitely got its limitations. I want to do a review soon. Thanks for watching and I hope you're getting in the miles.
Amazing camping and adventure content, my friend! Thank you for this wonderful share. Keep up the awesome work~
Thanks! That makes me feel good. I love these trips, it keeps me sane... sorta....
Cool stove. Can you use it in wet weather? I would think it would be very hard to use if all the leaves and pine needles were wet. ERL is an amazing place. You can't just do it once. :)
I love it but it has its limitations for sure. It would be hard. I want to do another video reviewing it but I will say I think to get good use out of it you need really decent and dry fuel. But it is fun. Thanks for watching!
I always find natural springs fascinating. Thanks for showing 2! BTW, great videography and choice in music, really pulled the whole hike in together.
Thanks and yeah, I can't get enough of the natural springs. Definitely a repeat. I liked the way the video came out but I need to work on the low light stuff with the grainy footage. That's my next goal. Thanks again for watching!
What beautiful scenery! Look like you had perfect weather during your trip! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!
Oh yeah, the weather was perfect. I might try it next winter when its colder too. This is a good one, tough climbs but good. Thanks for hanging out!
I like how you call it a "little" 26 - 27 mile trip; I would have been huffing and puffing up and down those ups and downs! Beautiful water areas through there although that snake made me nervous 😄 I know what you're saying about the tent camping part because I never get a very good night sleep. We're looking at getting a bigger tent so that we aren't stuffed in there like sardines and maybe that will help. I was looking at your meals thinking how some pad thai would have been tasty! Great trip and thanks for sharing the experience.
I think you would have done fine but that second day was a tough one at times. I would like to use this trail to condition on in the future. I have a couple ideas on what to change in my set up to make more comfortable but I have to be careful because this pad keeps me warm in cold weather(wasn't an issue on this trip). Definitely would try some of your pack meals on this, the grits was pretty cool. I'll show what I'm doing with it one day, they're not instant grits. Thanks for hanging out!
it looks like a really nice area and some very good weather for the trip. Peace and positivity to everyone.
Peace and positivity to you Metal, that's what these trips are about. Maybe one of these days I'll get to hike up there in BC. I really lucked out on the weather on this one for sure. Thanks for watching man!
nice work dude, looks fun
Thanks man! This one was good and it's close by so I'll be back. Definitely a cool loop!
Hello! Thanks for sharing your fantastic adventure content with us here, keep up the awesome work too! Stay safeee~
Thanks! And I'll try to stay safe!
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO
Good video and explaining 🌠✋️😎👍
No problem and thanks for watching. Hope it was useful!
Great video , I got 1 Cincinnatus Chicken last year, the rest were Sulfur. I also enjoyed soon Puffballs from a tree like that.🌠✋️😎👍
I'm drinking some tea right now from Ganoderma found in the woods. I don't know what it tastes or smells like. It's odd. Ours in the Pacific Northwest look different from yours there.
Yeah, I would love to forage up that way!
Congratulations on your amazing find! 🍄 I haven't been lucky enough to find chicken of the woods yet, maybe next year.
I hope you find one, they are so cool. Happy Hunting!
Good to see nice variety of mushrooms 🍄
Nice that the shiitake logs are still producing 😊 Cool that you found that big lion’s mane, and then that big stack of chickens at the end! Love the duck find too 🦆😄👍
Thanks! Had a lot of fun with the mushrooms lately and I find those old decoys every so often. I have a collection of them that I don't know what I'll do with.
What on earth do you have there at 9:13? Love this video, seeing things I've not seen before!
I will have to look that thing up still because I don't know what it is. I'm pretty sure it's a fungus, I've seen it before but still haven't looked it up. Glad you liked it, I thought it would be a fun one. Thanks!
@@paxtianodirtfrog8947 I've seen a similar fungus, growing on a windowsill.
LIONS MANE ASSEMBLE
Oh but they have assembled! I have been finding some nice ones lately, like a lot of them. Maybe I'll start regrowing some of those crisped brain cells.
Thanks for the videos, man, these are great!
Thanks! That makes me feel good, I sure hope you found them useful!
How do you keep all those so clean from aphids?
Nobody likes using computers! It's "work". That's the dirty little secret of the tech industry. But your videos are great and you're doing good.
Thanks a bunch, I love them and hate them! I'm getting a little better now!
Amazing views and cool to see the change in ecosystems. Man, deer flies are the worst! Those cliff dwellings are a mystery. It seems like such a beautiful place to live. I wonder why they left. I sent you an email. I'm headed out to Colorado this Wednesday.
Watching your new video, 9-30-23, made me want to watch this video again. I'm wondering if you have any plans to revisit this trail?
Yeah I want to, but parts of it are closed now from fire damage. I was right close to that trail in the beginning of the 9-30-23 video but not nearly so high up the mountain.
Whenever I see a CDT video and they take this alternate, I always say to myself that I need to get out there and take it all in. I'm glad you got the chance and thanks for sharing it with us.
If you ever get the chance it is totally worth it I think. I actually saw that exact sign after I got back from this trail on one of Jupiter's videos of the Grand Enchantment. It was definitely cool to think I was walking a tiny section or alternate section of the big trail. Thanks for watching!
Is that a snake in the water at 8:48?
Yep, a little guy eating a fish or something. Him and the rattler were the only two I saw.
@@paxtianodirtfrog8947 thought I saw it move👍🏼
Truly enchanting! I can see where you could feel the next level in a place like this! What is the elevation of your location?
I didn't talk to many people at all on trail but what few I did said this place felt spiritual to them. I got the same vibe. I'll have to look up the elevation but I want to say 7-8 thousand. Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!
Good video. Good info. Thanks
It's large but not even close to my 82 pounder. 💪😎
❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank u for sharing brother
