Don Garlits home track. Golden Triangle Drag Strip. I was the flagger.
In 1960 I was the flagger at Golden Triangle Drag Strip in Oldsmar, Florioda. The strip was run by the Blockbusters car club. I was the Secretary of the club. All the famous drag racers of the day would come down in the wintertime to run against Don Garlits. Don, Pat, and Ed Garlits ran there almost every weekend. It was a great time for a 19 year old kid.

The First Detroit Autorama 1953
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.21 день назад
As a 13 year old kid, I went to the first Detroit Autorama. I was, from that moment, hooked on hotrods and customs. Three cars really made an impression on me. The Frank Mack 1927 Ford T roadster, The Tommy Foster 1932 roadster, and especially the 1940 Mercury convertible, originally built by Dick Rheame, and sold to Jerry Yatch. He had Bill Hines turn it into a full custom that dominated the f...

In our continuing Old Farts Car Club video series, we present the Beatnik Bandit by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. His most famous bubble top show car that was the star of the show car circuit in the early sixties. Restored by the National Auto Museum in Reno, and featured this week at the National Capitol in Washington D.C. I hired it for a car show in 1961 in St. Petersburg, Fl. It featured a very prof...

Fact everyone goes to hell based on sin. Just one. Calling on jesus is the only way to avoid hell. And Don called on jesus. The son of god.
Everyone goes to hell unless your born again.
Don is saved , born again.
Awful disrespectful name.
I thought that 32 looked like the Ala Kart, except not purple.
I LIKE IT I LOVE IT I WANT SOME MORE OF IT ❣️
Thanks for sharing your video and the history. Damn you were part of the legendary era and all the stories you must have. Thanks for mentioning Pat Garlits as she was a very nice lady and I remember her to this day from my childhood at the drags. She made me a sandwich once and took the time to talk to me at Dragway 42 when I was still in my single digit years. Years later after moving to California my dad and I were at Fremont in 72 for the Northern Nationals and I crossed paths with her in Dons pits and told her about the sandwich incident in Ohio and she remembered 👍......R.I.P. Pat 🙏
No one r I p s. Heaven or hell
Looking forward to your next production. Keep up the good work!
I remember the Golden Triangle very well. Attended races there many times. I saw Ed Garlits in his twin engine dragster lose the right front wheel in the traps and spin around several times before popping the chute and yanking her back straight. I saw Chris Karamasenies (bad spelling) blow his supercharger with a wonderful ball of fire but he was able to stop straight ahead and was unhurt. Those were great days in drag racing. Thanks for posting. Bob

Thanks, Sir. I'm glad you liked it and yes, more on the way!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm subbed.
On the way to work I snapped the throttle cable on my little VW Beetle one day. I tied a string to the carburetor arm, looped around the tailpipe once and came in my vent window! I continued on to work like nothing was wrong!
WOW! Really enjoyed the pinstriping effect and the editing of the photographs. You're really stepping up your game here! I am truly amazed! Maybe you can't teach an old dog new tricks, But you can teach an Old Fart! Sure hope your channel grows. Other custom fans really need to see this work. Great artistry on display in terms of the customs and these videos. Hope you're having fun with them! I sure am. Could you answer a question for me? I was doing research on the Pink Panther mobile which seemed to be designed and built by committee. Was Bob Reisner just a promoter, or was he actually a customizer or builder of cars like the Invader and such as Ed Roth or Bill Cushenberry was? Was he like a film pruducer some of whom put up the money for others to do the work, or was he like Chip Foose chopping and grinding metal and molding fiberglass like Roth to create cars?
Nice video of some beauties Thanks for posting and where they are.
Glad you like them! some great old stuff still around after all these years. More to come.
So awesome. Three great cars. Those cars when I saw them in the little pages made me into the car lover I am today. Happy New Year from another Old Fart. Ron

Would it have broken the bank to have an actual automotive journalist narrate this story
I am learning as I go.
the car on the album cover Is a Duce Coup But the one in the Beach Boys Song had a Flat head, The Car suits the song custom Machine.
Correct, We put the Olds in when we first got it. I drove it to school with a coat hanger thru thye firewall. Clarence didn't have his license yet and I did.
Que autos tan bonitos, muy elegantes.

@@Pappy1940 Your a Hot Rodder
This is among the top 10 GOAT cars !!!! How Iconic that your car club was called "The Trumpers!" Go TRUMP. This is one of those cars you just in awe of. WOW
I've got the Album too! . Back in the 1960's in New Zealand, a well known hot rodder ,Graham Berry ,built a tribute copy of Clarence's car ,which ,from memory was the Ist OHV Hot Rod in New Zealand, with a Y block adapted to a four speed Moss box from a jag. Many years later I knew the young people who had the coupe minus the Y block and Jag gear box. My younger brother was gathering parts to build a T bucket and ended up with the old trans. (he also had a 322 buick adapted to another jag box with over drive that had been in Allard Sports car. ).
Thank you, Sir. That the whole purpose of what I am doing here is to record the history of hotrodding in the old days.
I'm now 75, and I was interested in hot rods way before I was old enough to drive. I remember the BB's album cover, but I vaguely recall that this car was known as "The Starlight Coupe", according to an article in Hot Rod Magazine (early 1960's). More recently, Wayne Carini obtained it and featured it in an episode of "Chasing Classic Cars". Love it or hate it - there's no mistaking that custom front grille & quad headlights.
The car originally was called the silver sapphire. Still owned by the Catallo family.not the car you mentioned. Thanks for the post.
I saw this car, also built the model, very cool
Thank you , Sir.
1:25 That looks like the model they used for the HOT WHEELS " SILLOUTE" about 1966/67
The Silhouette was built by Bill Cushenbery at that time. It does look similar to this one as it had a bubble top also. Cushenbery also built the El Matador, that I owned in the seventies.
A version of the Beatnik Bandit and a version of the Silhouette were both part of the original "Sweet 16" Hot Wheels in '68. You may be combining or confusing the two different cars in your memory. I believe since Ed Roth was under contract for the plastic model company AMT is why that some books credit Bill Cushenberry for doing the drawing of the Beatnik Bandit to create it as a Hot Wheel for MATTEL/Hot Wheels designer (and friend) Harry Bradley. All the final drawings were done by Bradley. Bradley was an instructor at an art school where Chip Foose was a student. Perhaps they all once ate bacon at a diner near a table where Kevin Bacon once ate breakfast as well, IDK...
See post re: Silhouette and Beatnik Bandit Hot Wheels history.
@@davidparker8221 I know little about the models. You are correct about the Bandit, as I was speaking of the Cushenbery's Silhouette that was designed by Don Varner. and how both it and the bandit had bubble tops.
