Chris Meyer's Alias Zone
США
Добавлен 28 фев 2021
Alias Zone is Chris Meyer of LearningModular.com. Active as both a designer and user of electronic instruments, he has designed synthesizers, samplers, and digital audio recorders for Sequential Circuits, Digidesign, and Roland R&D, including creating Vector Synthesis. In 2001, he and a group of musician friends released the ambient groove + spoken word album Lucid Dreams, which won the AFIM award for best independent electronic/new age release at the time. After a detour for a couple of decades creating graphics for television and film, he has returned to music, teaching his fellow musicians how to master modular synthesizers under the Learning Modular banner. Most recently he has started composing and performing under the Alias Zone name again, combining his former influences with brand new synthetic yet still organic soundscapes.
Chris Meyer’s Alias Zone: Paradise Lost (live at Knobcon 2024)
This was the first public performance of the piece Paradise Lost, composed at the end of summer 2024.
modular & virtual synthesizers, sample playback, and more: Chris Meyer
visual wizardry: gordonswireworks
additional camera: Nick Peck
audio capture: Golf Shoes Music
post production: Chris Meyer
The performance was in quadraphonic sound; the fold-down to stereo unfortunately is not as clear as the original audio - but it’s a good deal better than a camera video and sound… ;-)

Something different for a "music video": getting to watch the Ableton Live timeline of the recorded piece to see where layers come in and out, and where edits were made. This is the final track I'm creating for my next album (Finite Space, previously called Eastern Front), and will be cleaned up and edited before the album is released - but I wanted to share some new material with you before th...

This performance premiered on April 1 2022 as part of SynthFest France. It’s a mythical, musical exploration of the Lod Cave in Thailand, with the various musical parts rushing off to explore its various chambers and celebrate its mystery and beauty, while others are more apprehensive and suggest caution. This performance of Iceland was created for the 2021 edition of SoundMiT. In a slight change from my recent instrumentation, I played my smaller portable modular synthesizer system, as well as several of my polyphonic synthesizers. Two days in the land of Nahua where the Aztecs and other great civilizations lived. We start as the first morning breaks, rising out of the mystery and implied danger of night. After a pleasant day, the sun sets again, bringing back the darkness and mystery. The second day is considerably more active - a hunting party? a skirmish? - before dreamtime descends again. This set was composed and per...

Chris Meyer's Alias Zone: Dream Catcher
very cool, thank you !
Great stuff. Love the video effects 😊
Thank you for the description
Excellent music
Wonderful 🙂
Great track! I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
Sounds great
This one is my new favorite. Deeply affecting and compelling, even without the backstory.
Always beautiful music you do!
So wonderful, & 😃very inspiring
wow, this is incredible..such beautiful sounds & voice.
Brilliant tones, some very fine unexpected moments.
This is really beautifully done Chris! Great inspiring space as well!
Hey Chris, this video really motivates me to move forward with my creative ideas and music! I like how you creatively used Swords to Ploughshares virtual instrument. Best regards from Kyiv, Ukraine!
I really appreciate you connecting with me and letting me know about your Swords to Ploughshares. Everyone reacts very deeply when I explain your story to them. I'm happy I can return some of your inspiration back to you.
Wow. That's really moving. Thanks for this.
DANG, The A Frame is an Amazing controller !!!!!!!!!!! assuming you are midi from that to a midi>cv and into the eurorack rig(ok, now im confused is it running the Deluge or Polyend Play looking thing ????)....... BEAUTIFUL Set !!!!!!!
Thank you - I'm really glad you enjoyed it! The aFrame is actually NOT a controller; it is its own sound source. The skin is the oscillator, which goes through internal sound modeling to create different sounds. That's why it's so sensitive, and changes character depending if you're dragging your fingernails across it, tapping it with a fingertip, striking it with your palm, etc. You can set up two different sounds for the edge and the center.
@@AliasZone Double WOW !!!!!!!
Brilliant performance, thanks for sharing!
Thank _you_ for watching & listening! I do indeed do this to share; i'm glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Chris. I like the Korg M1ish choir, I use it in 80% of my compositions, what a clean visual done in the dark, wow you have a lot of controls at your fingertips, nice visuals too, beautiful relaxing music, I love artists that combine modulars with computers, that Behringer console is awesome!
Thank you! To fill in one question/mystery, the choir-like sounds are the software version of the Korg Wavestation. And yes, the system was designed to give me maximum control in something that would fit inside my wingspan while performing, and carry-on luggage plus one checked bag while traveling.
Fantastic sounding and a visual feast. I am thinking of expanding with a Push 2 (again as sold my last one what a fool but then I have said that a lot in my time. don't remind me of my beloved Minimoog). If possible and not to big a question, how are you using the Push 2?
Hi - I'm using it for 3 main tasks: 1) To play notes on virtual synths. This includes loading notes into the arpeggiator that sits in front of the Wavestation virtual instrument, and playing the occasional pad and slow-motion lead. Key to getting me comfortable doing that was tweaking out its sensitivity so I wasn't killing my fingers by striking or pressing too hard, and switching to the Scale mode where each horizontal row contains an octave of the valid notes in the chosen scale (I find that easier to adapt to from piano, than to learn guitar fretboard-like layouts). 2) Launch rhythm loops, long samples, and ambiences. Loop clips are Live's forte, and harder to do in Eurorack as so few modules sync sample playback to an external clock (props to 1010 and the Disting). The atmospheric vocals are long non-looping clips I launch in Session mode, quantized by Live to start on the downbeat (so I can cue them up ahead of time). I also have been using the sample player plugins to launch ambiences I want to loop and therefore play for an indefinite period of time (like the water) - a latching foot switch (a Boss FS-5L) allows me to "keep the note held down" while I switch to other tracks. 3) Tweak some plugin parameters, such as arpeggiator settings (including latch on/off) and the new Channel EQ effect that shows the harmonic spectra of the sound playing with the EQ curve overlaid on top - great visual confirmation for finding harmonics to emphasize or suppress.
Excellent ❣️
Serine. Thank you for a great piece.
More good stuff from Alias Zone. This guy is definitely getting better. (I am a bit biased)
And he has an amazing (and free) motion graphics designer too!
Absolutely brilliant track. I bought the album on bandcamp.
So good. If this were pressed to vinyl I'd buy it.
Thank you! And as for vinyl, tell Bluetech & Behind the Sky - I'd be happy to work with them.
Nice! Thanks
Phew!!! Chills down my spine!
Oh wow. That's so beautiful 👌
Hi again. Nice to meet you during soundMit. Very interesting presentation of your setup.
Thanks for watching!
Omygosh !!!!!!!! This streamlined rig is just as spacious sounding as the large studio rig !!!!!!! Beautiful composition, Chris....! And Thank You for the patch lead signal flow concepts, totally makes sense now !!!!
Thank you! I compensated a bit by involving more polysynths. Another change was adding in the percussion from the smaller case, which is not in the big case.
@@AliasZone indeed, the percussion that you employ as a Synthesist is incredibly fitting for each song !!!!!, whether minimal, as in this song, or with more elements, as in 4oclock..... pretty amazing regardless of the rig !!!!!!! You have songs where the synth voices provide the feeling of time division, without the need for traditional percussion voices.... an often overlooked technique !
@@AliasZone oh I need to mention this to you, though I know you don’t go around tooting your own horn.... Your music NEEDS to be showcased on a Science oriented YT channel, COOL WORLDS..... Prof David Kipling is the content provider. So besides trying to get Sonicstate or Gaz Williams on the live-streams, I want to introduce your music to Cool Worlds, for their science videos.... I hope you don’t mind me “spreading the word” about your Art and your Educational Website..... ruclips.net/user/CoolWorldsLab My request to have them audition your channels is in the pinned comment by Cool Worlds.
@@paultorbert6929 I don't mind at all - I love to share, and am happy to share through different outlets. Thank you for "championing" me!
Just magnificent Chris, absolutely sublime. So many questions, to many in fact so I will just rewind and enjoy again.
Feel free to ask any questions here - plus I break down all of my tracks in great detail on my Patreon channel (patreon.com/learningmodular - 5v level or above).
question: do you use a "color coding scheme" for the eurorack routing ?..... like yellow for envs, green for osc, red for switches, blue for filters, etc..... it looks like you have some kind of "order" to patching........
Yes. I started color-coding them for my training videos, and have carried over the practice for my own patches. The color coding chart is part way down this article: learningmodular.com/choosing-patch-cables/
I do indeed use a color-coded scheme: yellow for audio, white for pitch CV, blue for modulation CV, red for triggers & gates, green for clocks.
beautiful peice
This piece was also shown at the start of the Chill Out Room performances at Knobcon 2021. I had originally planned to attend and play in person, but a broken leg meant I was unable to travel (especially with gear), so they kindly played this pre-recorded video in my place.
Yep, would definitely pick up an album's worth of this kind of beauty. BTW, I think one of your plugs is out of place... :~))
v.nice!
Awesome tones, excellent work on this Chris !
Lovely sense of organic flow - sub'd
Amazing
Love this one!!
Chris, Very cool piece. Great looking system. Thanks for the upload!!
An awesome sounding piece... brilliant work on this Chris !
*Beautiful!!*
Very nice!
outstanding! this would make for a superb movie soundtrack. Would love to see you collaborate with Hans Zimmer one day as he is big modular guy as well.
Nice one Jedi master!
I love the progression of this performance!
I really enjoyed! Well done!
Nice being here along for the ride...
Great works, thanks to you Chris
Fantastic! Also the graphic fades/wipes etc really add to the enjoyment! Thanks Chris.
