I shop regularly at Sainsburys Deepdale store and the fire alarm went off for real on one day. It was ‘stage one’ going into ‘stage two’ but the staff didn’t seem to know what to do. The store was built in 1991, opened in January 1992 and was fitted out with Clarkson Safety System conventional fire alarm system with Appolo series 30 ionisation smoke detectors through the store with some heat detectors. I wasn’t sure what equipment was in the store at the time ( as it’s now a new Clarkson System with Appolo Discovery analogue addressable )but the alarm went off and we all had stand in the car park whilst the fire brigade attended. I can’t remember how long we had to stand outside whilst the fire brigade attended but if it happened now it would be a quick look on the panel for the exact address that’s gone into fire mode. The Deepdale store had been through one refurb plus an extension to house a new Argos. I used to work on the shop floor at this store in the mid 90s when the old system was in. Homebase in Preston that was built in 1994 -95 also had Clarkson equipment in as that was owned by Sainsbury’s. I am not sure if Clarkson Safety Systems are in all Sainsbury’s supermarkets as a lot of their stores are now on lease including the the Deepdale Store but as Clarkson new equipment is in this store is reasonable to assume it’s used across all their stores uk wide. Clarkson manufacture their own panels but use Appolo smoke and heat detectors. It’s not known how much sales losses occur to Sainsbury’s when incidents like this occur but I know for sure some customers got back in their cars and drove off. I walked to Sainsbury’s that day so waited patiently until everyone was allowed back in the store. I used to work there part time in the early to mid 90s but I was never on duty when the fire alarm was tested.
