Kettlesnout Miniature Shetland Ponies is a small family stud, based in West Yorkshire. We breed miniature Shetland ponies - all adorable, well mannered and friendly.
Here are some videos of our ponies including births. We strive to be present at all foalings, using CCTV, milk testing and regular checks, we bond with the foals from birth and spend lots of time with them in their first months. It's amazing to see how quick the foals are on their feet and active, sometimes within minutes!

Lottie having her filly foal, she was eating grass one minute and got down to foal the next .... Trixie is a super friendly foal, loves to sit down on your knee in the field? We don't pull on the foal as the mare is doing well on her own, just making sure a leg isn't crooked at all. The gap in the middle of the video was just checking this and just a little movement meant the foal was born with...

This video shows the simple test procedure for predicting mare foaling time. It involves collecting just a half ml of mares milk which can be tested and the test result will then indicate proximity of foaling. Here's Suki giving birth to her colt on 11th May at noon. There's a gap in the middle where I stopped to break the bag and check all was well. Suki's milk had tested in the 85% foaling range the day before, using the Mother Natures Kit. Our mare Charlotte's Moonlight [Lottie] was being watched on CCTV at 2am on 1st May 2012 and started to foal. All was well, I just had to break the bag when the foal was well out and it hadn't broken. She was having a hard time foaling, so human intervention was needed in order for her to have the foal. If it took her a long time to have it, the foal could have suffocated and died.

What an absolutely cute foal and beautiful mother. Why don't we have a method to somehow "freeze then in time" to stay tiny and foal-like throughout their lives? Yeah, I know, complications would arise, but it's one of my fantastical what-if notions - particularly if you could prevent any innate physical troubles. Perhaps some day they'll make it happen and we'll have house-horses.

We put her a dog rug on Summer initially as she was born early, out in the field in March and she was quite cold, it might not look it but the temperature was low. We don't generally rug our shetlands but occasionally there are times when we may do for welfare reasons, she was less than 24 hours old here and the rug was to ensure she conserved her body heat. Granted a native will have to brave the cold in the wild but we'd rather be on the safe side with an early foal.
minishetlandponies I bought a mare a couple of months ago and she gave me a beautiful little foal, mare, ten days ago. Born almost 16 days early but very strong and doing great.

Yes, he is a fully registered, licensed stallion with the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society. He has now been sold to Finland and will be travelling there soon! We will be sad to see him go but glad that he's going to a good home with other shetland ponies.
