I thought they were called penny farthing bikes.
they are
@MarquisDeSang why are they calling high wheel bikes in the video then?
@@travisazzopardi8024 Maybe it is a description instead of the name of the device? Be seeing you.
At the time they were called "ordinaries," as distinguished from the "safeties" which were being developed into the design that we use to this day. Penny farthing was a nickname that originated in England and caught on over here mostly after they became obsolete.
@@GCDaysSJ It looks like the most dangerous thing to rie and I ride superbikes.
San Jose's Municipal Stadium was renamed Excite Park (home of the San Jose Giants). I was born and raised and still live in Mountain View. I played at Municipal Stadium in the 70's and 80's. My son was born and raised and still lives in Mountain View. Ralph Horio is my Great Uncle (my son's Great-Great Uncle). I guess I have Uncle Ralph's passion for taking video. My son (Logan Tokunaga) is 15 years old. Yesterday (8/10/24) was the Mike Gin Memorial Game at Excite Park. Logan was the starting pitcher. My son (Logan Tokunaga) is 15 years old; a Hinaga and Horio descendant. Yesterday (8/10/24) was the Mike Gin Memorial Game. Here is that game at Excite Park (San Jose Muni). Coincidence? History repeats itself? Full circle? ruclips.net/user/liveUBV-IGKHyJs?feature=shared
Thank you for posting. I didn't know about this book or event. Lots of familiar names. Russell Hinaga and his brothers and sisters are my great-uncles and great-aunts; as were the Horios. I see Uncle Ernie and Auntie Lil in the video. I played for the San Jose Royals (Fred Watanabe) in the 80s.
Sorry you didn't make it. Lillian, Helen, and Aiko were there, as well as Ralph and Sumito. Fred Watanabe's wife Carolyn was there too. Harry and Bernice Yoshioka showed up at the book sale and signing held afterwards. I was really glad to be able to preserve the story for the guys and the community. I just wish that a few more of the guys could have been around for the finished product.
Thank you for posting. This is an OMG discovery for me. My grandfather was John Horio and grandmother Mary Hinaga Horio. My mother June Horio (Tokunaga). Her brothers and sisters George, Fred, Mike, Rosie. My mom and Auntie Rosie are in the video. I see my grandmother (Mary Horio) with either my Uncle Fred or Uncle George as well. Auntie Rosie and Uncle Mike are still around. I will ask them. Anyone out there that can identify some of the other people in the video?
Amazing discovery for me. My grandfather was John Horio.
Incredible find. My grandfather was John Horio. My Great-Uncles were the baseball Hinagas and Horios. Thank you for posting. I started a Facebook "Hinaga Clan of San Jose" page. Lots of baseball pics and many more to come.
OMG! That's my mom (June Horio) and her sister Rosie Horio (my aunt) in the thumbnail. Their father (my grandfather) was John Horio. Far left is Marion Horio.
What a crazy find for me. My grandfather was John Horio. He is in the video at 2:33 (far right). Thank you for posting.
I’ve been searching for this - if it’s the one between capitol car dealership off to the right of 87 on communication hill? I went down and Almaden rd -I went down in there when I was around 15 in 1988? We made it to a lake at the bottom- it was terrifying, there were arrows and string everywhere, our flashlights were dying , not sure how we made it out 😮
Yup, this is just a short distance north of the one you went into. I got photos and very brief footage of the one you're describing, but by the time I went back for more footage it had been sealed (presumably by the fire dept. Here's the location of the one in this video: www.google.com/maps/place/San+Jose,+CA/@37.290225,-121.8661006,89a,35y,180.56h,23.28t/data=!3m1!1e3!4m6!3m5!1s0x808fcae48af93ff5:0xb99d8c0aca9f717b!8m2!3d37.33874!4d-121.8852525!16zL20vMGYwNHY?entry=ttu
And here's the approximate location of the larger mine you were in. I believe the dark spot in the middle is where the entrance was filled in: www.google.com/maps/@37.2904687,-121.8643542,34a,35y,184.42h,43.91t/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu
Ah, cool. I live on the hill. Always wondered what it looked like down there and if there are any cool rocks.
