    I think the difference is more about tessatura than anything. A great example is Velma vs Roxie from Chicago. They are both usually classified as altos but I have sung through both roles in the show and Velma is frequently operating in a belt around G4-D5. Roxie is not, vast majority of her lines are easy to sing in chest voice and many of her higher notes (Bb is the highest) can be done in mixed voice by a skilled transitioner.

    There was no social media for the show, until after rehearsals started, and no way to build a following. There were no discounts during the preview period, Katie should have been on tv shows, singing her big songs and it never should have been at The Palace Theatre in the first place, The show isn't that big. When it made the jump across from London, the show got too overblown and it didn't need it. Also, the book was possibly too british in the writing, it had more of a british humour rather than a US voice. Despite all these, I lovd the show and saw it 3 imes in London and 2 times in NYC

    My range is somewhere around E3/F3 to around G5/A5. Although I can sing that high up, it is very breathy head voice. My more realistic range of what I can really sing is more F3 to F5. Am I contralto or mezzo? I find it difficult to belt those high notes like you described mezzos doing, but this could because I need more vocal training. thank you!

    • @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599
      @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599 28 дней назад

      @@as.31415 Hello! So contraltos can sing anywhere from D3 (low) to maybe as high as B-flat-5… just depends on your voice, tone and texture. You may have a breathy head voice but more developed chest voice. You can always increase your range with different exercises and techniques. You may want to try vocal lessons if that’s an option for you! Just remember to breathe properly, relax your jaw and open, don’t strain and tighten your throat to belt. Engage your diaphragm to hit belt notes. Hydrate and use your sinus cavities as “speakers”, let the sound resonate in your cheeks. If you sound breathy it may be because you are not getting breath support and you are letting the sound drift away…hope these tips helped. Thanks for watching!😀

    I know I’m coming along months later but….I’ve seen people try to make the argument that if they “allow” Audra to play Rose, then a white actress should be able to play Celie in The Color Purple or Harriet Tubman in a show about her life, which to me, is such a disingenuous argument. Their experience as Black women, is essential to the story. Harriet was part of the Underground Railroad ffs!!! Their identity as black women completely impacts how they experience the world and is part of the story. I don’t think you can make the case that Rose in Gypsy, that her whiteness is essential to her experience or the story. Gypsy is a bit more universal than that. They haven’t changed the book or lyrics at all. It’s all original Gypsy, with a black woman playing Rose. Which just inherently adds another layer of context to the character and the story, which I love! I saw the show last week, maybe their 8th or 9th preview, and it was amazing, and Audra is a powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with as Mama Rose! If some folks have an issue with it, then I guess it’s their loss, they’re missing an amazing experience 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599
      @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599 29 дней назад

      @@stacyh154 Ah! I knew Audra would be amazing in this role! She is in everything she does! Yeah… my point in the video is it is based (loosely ) on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee- they were real people and they were white. BUT were they soooo famous that they specifically must be played by white people and it if not it will detract from the show? I think not. I believe there are some shows where gender and race should absolutely be considered in the casting. Other biographical musicals, like Jersey Boys or Ain’t Too Proud To Beg I would never cast differently than what they were in real life. We can’t get past The Four Seasons being white and The Temptations being black. I think it depends on show…Thanks for sharing!😀👍

    Roxy, if people got upset at a non Jewish actress playing Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, and a non LGBTQ plus actress playing that role in Jagged little Pill, and we are saying we need authenticity in our casting, than this should also be a case of traditional casting due to it being based on real people, same with Sound of Music, based on real family, which was white, and based on a real nun during the take over of Hitler. Some roles are just not meant for every one to paly them, I don't care how big a star you are. If they do this, then Porgy and Bess needs to let other races perform the show, its only faire.

    • @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599
      @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599 Месяц назад

      @@wwozanewmusical Well… I have been debating this with theatre friends . I believe the problem with the Fanny Brice casting was that the very essence of her comedy was making fun of her own “Jewish-ness” and if a person is not Jewish then they don’t understand what it is to be Jewish and therefore won’t get the humor or understand the character. As for non LGTBQ+ people taking on gay roles…the same could be said in reverse. LGTBQ+ actors play in straight roles all the time… There are definitely some biographical pieces I would not change like MJ the Musical- that needs to be cast a certain way, as does The Cher Musical. I think there are times to take liberties and times when it makes sense to stay true to the story and the cultural aspects of the piece. Just my thoughts. Thanks for watching. 😀

    I think the reason it was a hit in the UK and not in the USA is because the audience in the West End are far removed from the crimes of the protagonists at the center of this story, whereas for US audiences it could seem that a musical would be making light of a nasty topic. I'm guessing that what may have drawn Elton John and Jake Shears to Tammy's story is her LGBT and AIDS advocacy perhaps 🤷‍♂️

    • @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599
      @roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599 Месяц назад

      For sure Elton John was drawn to it for those reasons. US audiences may have also been able to make light of Tammy Faye because no doubt she and her husband have been a source of comedy for years. So we have no problem with a “spoof” of their life story. But at this particular juncture in time many Americans are feeling anger, depression, grief, and anxiety about what is to come. And the Christian Nationalist movement/ MAGA is at the heart of it. We are not ready to laugh at what we feel got us here. It would be like doing Cabaret in 1945 Germany. Too soon.

      @@SmilesWalker Hello, so some employers like a form of post secondary education. Depending on your interests it can be a stepping stone into a variety of fields. All education can help enhance personal skills like critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration. My channel focuses on theatre so if you are looking to go into that field of being a performer that doesn’t necessarily require a degree but it would make you a more well rounded performer. If you are looking to get into production work, marketing, IT, graphic art, publishing, teaching this maybe a great degree for you. There are many options of course outside the realm of theatre in administration, web design, physical therapy or wherever your creativity and talents take you. A degree is a piece of paper that you do work hard for grant it, but you are the person with the skills, talent and dreams! Think big! Good luck😀👍Thanks for sharing.

      @@roxiesbroadwaybreakdown5599 Yeah I've been a theater major. I graduated from a performing art high school, shortly after I attended college in Hollywood at AMDA. I got excused because I oversleep and then had to take an absence. I was trying to work on getting my BFA. Now afterwards though out the decade I did get bit jobs with a listers from music videos to extra work with a listers, and a few short films I got to act in and the list goes on. I always decided to work on prop work and sound and lighting and got paid behind the scenes for that, now the college im going to attend to continue where I left off has classes for that and so I can better align myself with the work back stage and being an actor. Yes I have gotten alot of nay saysers close to me saying get a job this do part time that and I NEED MONEY. Now I want to finish with a degree in associates, bachelor, and masters. I just hope my family and partner can hang in there with me. I'm also trying to get a job at a movie theater part time before my classes start. Im trying to regain strength again to continue on. My partner asked reccently what do I hope to get out of my degree and what will that go to..I was appalled a little and simply stated that theater work behind the scenes and on stage. Im in Flordia right now and no longer in California, hopefully Flordia treats me well.

    I could never sing Jesus Christ. He has some really crazy high notes. But Judas is a lot of fun to sing, despite from the fact that my timbre is to warm and soft compared to a tenor. ;) To be honest, there are not much tenor songs I couldn't sing. Sometimes I can do a bariton song too, the question is not: Can I hit the notes? The question is more about: Can I sing them beautyful and in the way they are ment to be sung. And the honest answer is: It always sounds wrong. Like a androgynous something or strange female voice... I don't know. Songs are written for special voices and they are never written for voices like mine. So no matter what I try to sing, it sounds not like it is ment to sound.

      @@mijalheinrich4331 Oh, so I just read this comment. I replied to your other one and asked what kind of songs/voices you identify with? Judas is a huge role! It sounds like you have a very unique voice and should embrace it! If you can hit tenor notes you are definitely a contralto, perhaps mezzo mix. If you can belt the notes totally embrace that for musical theatre! As for softening the tones or being more melodic that may take practice to smooth transition to your head voice. There are exercises and breathing techniques for that. Are you currently taking voice lessons?😀 Just curious..one on one training can really help with vocal technique and hone your natural talent. It seems like you have a huge range, it may take someone to guide you in finding the right mix for your vocal abilities and learn smooth transitions.😊👍Thanks for reaching out! Hope this helps.
