ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Joe Gdovin [1944 - 2024] lives in Binghamton, New York. He’s always been very active - training for marathons, hunting in Alaska, and mountain climbing. But in the '90s, doctors found a blood clot had lodged into his heart, causing a mild heart attack.
He underwent bypass surgery after finding more blockage, but it wasn’t enough. 17 years later, he suffered a massive heart attack and was sent to Rochester General Hospital (RGH) for treatment.
There, doctors helped save the life of on...

I grew up in Connecticut and was 10 when President Kennedy was assassinated, it was obviously tragic and we were all deeply affected. If you weren't around at that time it's hard to imagine the importance and influence of WTIC radio and TV(channel 3) and have fond memories of personnel including Bob Steele and "Hap" Richard's. At the time, on our B&W TV, we had a total of five channels to choose from; 3, 8, 18, 22 and 30!

Stephen R. Rintoul...so that's where WSRR (WSTC) got the callsign. I worked for an iteration of WSTC called Fairfield County News Radio. WSTC teamed up with Norwalk's WNLK 1350 in the late 1990's doing part-time news reporting and anchoring a Sunday AM news shift from 7am-noon also running the board for some live call-in programs. Both stations aired news and talk programs including the likes of Neal Boortz out of Atlanta as Cox once owned the stations. There were two news shifts...6-9 AM and 4-7 PM. We also aired sports like high school football and UCONN basketball. And...I got to work with Don Russell who had worked for CT Public Radio's WEDW 88.5FM doing a calendar of events weekly. Mr. Russell did a talk radio program at WSTC...and I served as "call screener." As of 2011 WSTC is a part of WSHU Public Radio with NPR's news and talk. All news is done from the WSHU studios at the Sacred Heart University campus. WNLK is now a Catholic radio station Veritas Radio which also airs EWTN Radio programs. All "on the bird" to quote the shop talk...nothing local.

Ah the mundanity of human life was being discussed and how beautifully banal it sounded, it's what really defines us to be honest. And then in a flash, came one of the most important news events of the 20th century, just like that.

That teletype SFX heard at the end of the newscast behind Mr. Bertel was Track B14, "Teletypes," from the "Authentic Sound Effects, Vol. 2" album (Elektra EKS-7252) issued around 1964. From about the mid-to-late 1980's to 2020, 1010 WINS in New York used a loop derived from that track.

Being only 3 months old when it happened I of course don't recall the time it happened but I've studied that assassination for many years and I'm thankful I was only a baby. Listening to this broadcast it seemed as though the United States was quite vulnerable to foreign hostility. That's frightening

I remember that evening, I think, it was so many years ago. Around the time of the move to Broadcast House, one of CT's sculptors, Frances Wadsworth, presented the new station with a sculpture called "The Broadcaster", a farmer with a basket hung from his left arm, his right arm/hand looked as if he had just withdrawn it from the basket with seeds in the palm of his hand. For some time after that, the sculpture would appear near the Channel 3 Logo, perhaps when it was time for the news. Have not seen it in many, many years.

If you follow the comments here, you'll see some possibilities as to the delay. The first delay was on NBC Radio. Robert MacNeil filed his first report possibly just before Merriman Smith's first UPI report hit the wire at 12:35, CST. (My times here will be CST...it's an hour behind EST) However, the guy on the NYC end of NBC Radio did not check the recording immediately. It's known that the first radio report was a local report by John Allen of WFAA radio in Dallas, from Allen following Dallas Police Radio chatter. The first national broadcast report was by Don Gardiner(sp?) of ABC Radio, who went live at 12:36 PM. I think it took longer on CBS TV. Walter Cronkite saw the report from his former UP colleague Smith, and decided to go live, but he had to wait until the TV cameras in the CBS TV newsroom for a picture, so he had to use a radio studio, and get the audio from the radio studio patched into the TV network, which showed a "CBS Bulletin" card on air. I wonder if there was a delay on CBS Radio. WCBS in New York (heard on another RUclips video) interrupted a local program with news from its own newsroom, before CBS Radio sent its first Net Alert broadcast by Allan Jackson around 12:40. Much stuff on the air and behind the scenes.
