Fishing the conditions, Albury 27th September, Westons and Powdermills
This was my last chance to get onto the river before the season ended. I'd booked 1/2-day holiday and was anxiously checking the weather. The day before had been wet, very wet, and the forecast for the Friday morning was just as bad. I decided to go ready for the river but I also had the back up plan of fishing the lake at Powdermills. Driving across the Downs the weather wasn't looking good - rain and flooded roads. Arriving at Westons, the river didn't look too bad; a little more water than usually but pretty clear. Even though the rain was still coming down I had to give it a go. Went larger on the nymph at first to make sure it got down. The fish were willing participants but the hook...

Albury Estates 14th September 2024

September is racing by and, after some recent very wet weather, last week warmed up - lovely fresh mornings and warm sunshine - so Saturday morning saw me ready to visit the river again. I decided to start on a nymph hoping that the temperature would have warmed up by the time I got to Vale End and I could then switch to a dry fly. Well, the sun played its part but the fish hadn't read the scri...

After a tough couple of weeks at work, I needed some 'me time', and what better way to spend the day than casting a few flies. I thought long and hard about how to start - the river beckoned so the morning was spent on the river, and it was a day for nymphs. After lunch things got tough. Try what I might, the rainbows were just not interested until late in the afternoon when the sun went down b...

I saw this pattern on another RUclips video, ruclips.net/video/zFQjvhMOpEA/видео.htmlsi=h0vq91ywbPe2swkd and had to give it a try. Floats so well and there's a reason these old flies survive - they work! Thanks to Chris Matthews Fly Fishing and his channel for introducing me to this fly. Will definitely tie some more.

A lovely, relaxing, session at Albury Estates Fisheries on a hot Friday afternoon. As always, I was with my trusty Wychwood R&S #3, 5x leader and 6x tippet. It's close combat on the river at this time of year so happy to come away with just one lost fly, and 3 lovely trout to the net and safely released. The blackberries are also ready so picked some for a batch of blackberry vodka! I'd forgott...

The day started warm and got hotter. I planned to try the river first then head onto the lakes. Only saw one rising fish - wild brownie or small stocked rainbow - you decide?! Loved the Orange Herby I tied using ash grey and orange silks from Ephemera. Herby is the name of Sofi's share horse and as she gave me the silks as a Father's Day present she got to decide on the name of the fly. There w...
My trip to Derbyshire to fish The Derwent & The Wye, 16th & 17th May 2024

Having organised a day up in Derbyshire, I wanted the rush-hour to end before hitting the motorways. The answer - an early morning session on the Tillingbourne at Albury. Although nothing was rising, I started with a small emerger pattern until Cameron mentioned that with such a prolific mayfly hatch over the past few days, a mayfly pattern might be just what they were looking for. Say no more!...

After so much bad weather, and getting tired of playing 'dodge the rain' it was great to feel the warmth of the sun - remember that - and see some blue sky. A morning session at Albury was on the cards and I set myself two targets. The first was some trout for the freezer, and the second was to see if I could catch a few wild brownies from the river on a dry fly - my first of the year. Things s...

I only had a few hours so made sure I was down at Vale End for 7.30. Usual set-up #3, 7ft 6" rod, 9ft tapered leader down to 5x, and 12 inches of 6x tippet. Tried various nymphs over the next 3 hours at Vale End and Weston's with no success. Finally, as the sun started to warm things up, the fish started to show some interest,....
Day 2, Albury Estates Fisheries, 5th April 2024

After a cracking first day, I was watching the weather forecast closely. With more rain over night, and a big storm approaching, I was hoping that Day 2 would be just as kind to me. The drive to Albury over the Downs didn't give me much reason to be confident with flooded roads, but the rain cleared up as forecast. When I arrived at Albury, the river looked surprisingly good compared to day 1. ...

After so many missed opportunities this year to get on the rivers due to the incessant rain, I'd booked two days at Albury weeks in advance. The river was high, fast, and looked like hot chocolate. I decided to give ...

The forecast was bad and the rain arrived as promised! Still, I'd been tying some wet flies and so I set myself a challenge of catching my ticket only using the wets, no BFD's, or other big, shaggy lures today. Once I cracked the code - the fish were cruising the drop-off - the takes started coming! Apologies for the sound quality, or lack of, as it's been a while since I tried to record my fis...

After the rain had ended, and the weather had warmed up, I took a late night decision to have a quick session at Albury this morning. The weather decided it was in charge and the temperature plummeted overnight. It was -3 deg C when I arrived and -1 when I left two hours later. Fortunately the trout were happy to play and I had two lovely Spartics to the net.

I know next to nothing about fishing, as Rob knows. However I appreciate the skill and experience of anglers. And this is another episode of both. Well done, Bro. 👍
I see you've gone for the neck mount Robert. I like it as you can take it off and hang it up somewhere for a different shot. I did add a short curved extension arm to mine just to push the camera away so I didn't keep hitting it with my jacket. I think this winter, I will look at some sort of magnet fixed to my shirt so the camera stats put when i lean forward. Just the 5 1/2 month wait now😢
The only issue I found with it was when I have the camera in its waterproof case it tended to angle down a bit too far. Other than that just user error. Yep, the start of next season feels a long way off. Grayling time tho 👍
@robertalp3878 alas Grayling in the South West are a bit hit and miss. If you know where to go then they are in the Tamar and Exe systems but I generally have a blankety blank.
I love the tillingbourne and cant wait to do some trout fishing there! do you have to buya day ticket only to fish the small streams there? or is that free?
@@frxgzy it’s all in your day ticket so you can fish the beats at Westons and Vale End. At Weston’s you can’t go onto Turbine beat that runs beside the main lake/Lodge Pool as that’s syndicate water, unfortunately
@@robertalp3878 ah okay, so in order to fish the beats like the stream next to the road you need the day ticket? but don't need any fish tokens if your doing catch and release on the beats?
@@frxgzy yep. I have a season rod. It’s a bit of money up front but then I can go and fish the river beats, plus Powdermills lake and river beats when I want at no charge. Only need me fish tickets and you can get a discount on those too.
Where did the season go, Robert?
@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 I know, the season has flown by. Trying to grab every opportunity over the next few weeks
Another fishing classic from my bro. If Paul Whitehead is unavailable for the next series of "Gone Fishing", our Rob could easily partner Bob Mortimer.
Just watched the one on the Dee in Wales grayling fishing 🎣
Cheers for the link Robert, as you rightly say rightly, say there's a reason these old patrerns survive👍
Thank you Robert always interesting, especially for me as I fish there also.
@@nigelriley6480 fish appear to be smaller this year-something anglers have mentioned in other rivers. Don’t know if it’s a cyclical thing or if the bigger fish come out to play in the evening. 🤔🤔
Well fished, most would not even attempt to fish such a small stream / river, just shows fish are everywhere if you look.
@@JohnRitson78 yep, the river can fish very well sometimes
Hot weather, adjacent to a busy road. And still you fished and triumphed.
Impressive views of that fast running river and your fishing.
The more you demonstrate how much you know about angling, the more I see that I don't!!! 😊
Some lovely looking water there, Robert. It is surprising just where a fish will hold. To us, it appears too turbulent, but for a trout, it's cover👍
@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 yep, few fish in the deeper slower pools, but skinny, fast, water was packed!
@@robertalp3878 Yet another area for the list Robert, I need to become a man of leisure, somehow 🤔
@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 you and me both! If you get up there you must try the Elan-water straight from the reservoir, cold, full of oxygen, the fish was hard fighting
Excellent weather for an excellent day's fishing there for you Rob. And a brace of nice fish as a result, good to see the new flies are doing the business. Hopefully one day I'll join you there and you can show a coarse angler the finer points of your sport
Hey, Paul, there’s some right good places to fish up your way so name the day-I look forward to leading you to the light! 😂👍
Somehow managed to catch 11 last time I went, it really was my lucky day!!!
That’s cracking! 👍🏆
Well done with that duo of catches, Bro. An exciting video of the effort required to net them both.
Another classic clip. 👍
Evening Rob, most anglers would just walk past that ‘tiny drain’ looking for somewhere to cast a line, another pleasant video , thanks for sharing
Thanks Chris, it’s a tiny stream but holds some beautiful fish. Was slightly over awed by the Derwent and Wye yesterday but soon got the hang of it.
Looks like a fantastic day to be outdoors… and added bonus of some lovely fish!
Thanks Paul, wasn’t easy but I wouldn’t want it to be 😂👍
Some lovely fish Rob, thanks for sharing
Super water clarity … I was there later in the day: couldnt tempt them with anything !
They were super picky!
Sunshine and fishing ... idyllic.
Excellent Rob, gotta get out there!!
Well done Robert. I wonder how many car drivers have a double take as they see you into a fish?
Don’t forget the cyclists! Just seen your video-will be watching tomorrow 👍
Looking good there, Rob!!! 😊
Nice to see Robert, we're still at 1/2 a meter over fishable height on our Crediton streams with about an inch of visibility. Still the best things come to those who wait.
Definitely, fingers crossed for you 🤞🤞
Your expertise and experience surpass all of the challenges of water and mud etc.
I was a river flyfisher for 40 years and only tried Stillwater fishing as a friend of mine didn’t do rivers and wanted to take up fishing again. I was dubious about its attractions but I learned very quickly that I can be as hard and sometimes more difficult than river fishing. It took me two years to get my head around the different tactics required and the conditions and fish feeding habits change from day to day….I can honestly say I now love Stillwater fishing. I also have the same issue with my local river which is very often in spate…..a problem I don’t have on my local Llyn.
You’re right, each has its place with the advantage of stocking the freezer with ‘catch & keep’. Nothing beats the take of a wildie but stillwaters are good fun
You had it windy! …but I know how tricky Dartmoor can be. SHORT casts only - into little pools, and often fished on your knees is best. Wickham’s Fancy / Red Spinner works best up there.
They loved the Dynamite Harry but were so quick!
Agreed about the rivers as mine in wales have been non fishable since the end of sept last year, seeing you fishing there brought back memories as I was born and raised between Albury and Chilworth by the Tillingbourne at Postford mill before all the houses there now existed .
At least your trout season has started, we still have to wait until the 1st April and work commitments prevent me taking days off to travel to Wales 😞
As a river and wild stream fisherman this always looks to me like catching fish in a barrel and I have to wonder if going for wild grayling would be a better idea.
It can be but Albury doesn’t overstock so if you get it wrong you can still blank. And yes, I tried to get some time on the rivers for grayling but down this way we have had more than enough rain and every time I tried to get out the rivers were unfishable
Great feeling when the fishing been slow, then the method clicks
Well done….a lovely video showing persistence and intelligence pays off in the end!
Thanks for the comment and for watching my video. The upper cascade was nice, quiet and secluded. It was definitely not a case of just chucking bright big flies and hoping for a take.
I didn’t think you were allowed to fish from the bridge.
Well, it was my first time there and when I was shown around I wasn’t told anything so assumed it was just a nice way to get into the fish.
@@robertalp3878 You had a good day. Coltsford Mill is a lovely place to visit.
@@markosborne8784 yep, was a little crowded the day I was there, but will give it another go at some stage
@@robertalp3878 I’ll be going back there soon. I travel to Coltsford from Essex. Well worth the shortish journey.
@@markosborne8784 yep, my local is Albury Estates, off there this morning
Thanks for the video. I fish these streams quite a bit, and I wonder if your hit rate might improve if you kept a lower profile, fished a shorter line and started right at the pool tail before moving up into the streamy stuff. You can spook every fish in the pool if you aren’t super stealthy! But then again I’m no expert and it’s never easy… tight lines for next season
Thanks, John, we’d had lots of takes on the upper Cherrybrook the day before. The challenge here was the down stream wind more than anything, and it was the first time we’d fished this section. Will be back next year! Tight lines 👍
I agree: a downstream wind can make it nigh on impossible (unless you fish downstream wets or even a sneaky dry!)@@robertalp3878
Nicely done Rob, it looks like a pretty fishery. Tight lines
Thanks Chris, I will give it another go as it’s quite near to me. I think the weather brought out the angler’s desperate for their fix so it was a bit too busy for me.
Bob Mortimer's got nothing on you, Bro. Very interesting and entertaining. And I say that as a non-angler.
Hey man absolutely loving the videos, albury is my local. Give me a shout if you are going again soon, I’m always looking for tips.
I’m off to Coltsford Mill on Friday if I can get booked in. If not I’ll be back at Albury for the day. Always happy to share experiences and flies
Enjoy it either way!!!
A brace of nice fish to make all that walking worthwhile. Seemed like a beautiful day to be out
I also had my last trip on Friday. I expect that the rain Thursday put the fish off a bit. Nice take from the rainbow off the top👍
Yep, the hackle helped it sit high and proud 👍
Great commentary
The last fish of the year. Great views on the walk down and then the fishing itself was compelling.
Another angling triumph!!! Well done, Rob.
Well done Rob. Looks like you picked the best time to go as it became pretty unbearable later on. I love the way you talk to your fish...one day they might start answering back.🤪
Hope to get down a couple of more times before the end of the season 👍🤞
Hi Robert what a great place to fish after watching this I think a trip down there in September for a few days did you stay local at two bridges
We camped at The Plume of Feathers, a pub in Princeton which is about 1.5 miles away. You can stay at The Two Bridges Hotel, or there are other places in Princetown.
I believe all the rivers that flow off the moor are ‘spate rivers’ they rise very quickly after rain so something to be wary of
Hi Robert thanks for the info I’ll check out the camping at the plume of feathers also I’ll checking the weather before hand 👍@@robertalp3878
Great stuff Rob. Thanks for taking the time and effort to record this...happy memories and we've improved 200% on our previous Dartmoor trip. Looking forward to next time already, hopefully without wind and bulls.
One of my favourite places on the planet Robert, I must get up there again soon👍 I don't know which camera you use for filming, but if it's a gopro type thing, I'd highly recommend a foam windslayer. Completely changed the standard of the audio on my videos 👍
Thanks, Chris, it’s an AKASO, a much cheaper version. All the GoPro accessories seem to fit so I’ll try that. Cheers
Can't help with the wild or stocked debate, but looks like a good session nonetheless
PB well done.Nice video.Lovely little stream.Subbed
Thanks Martin-what do you think, wild or stocked?
Wild
Def wild, I fish albury as much as I can and still have evaded the bloody wild browns!!! Lovely fish that!!!
Well done Rob...What a great session. All that practice casting on small streams paying off now. Looking forward our Dart trip...watching the master in action!
Lol, and the best thing was I didn’t lose a fly. On that beat of the river I’m always expecting to lose some, as the small hooks sometimes break when I’m trying to get them back out of the shrubbery! 😂👍
That weather...right on cue!
So pleased I caught the lightning too!
