I don’t have a scientific answer to your question but I’m my own experience for the viewer to see. You can check out my progression, if you like what you see, maybe I’m doing something right. If you don’t like what you see, then my method may not be effective.

@@kenancatrules i can see from your progress that you had a leap of fate in your art after the 2 years you stop posting, and i can say referencing works for you but for me it kinda didnt click, im still searching for a method to help me improve, im stuck at the semirealism art with hard edges looking like a cardboard stand poster and a really bland poses

So I’ve never stopped drawing since I started in March 2020. There was a time I dabbled in RUclips but wasn’t serious about it until December of 2023. There are improvements that’s very noticeable to me and not as apparent to views. Keep in mind my main strategy to grow my RUclips presence is through live drawing, it’s something I could strike a balance between drawing (what I truly passionate about) vs producing videos (less passionate about). Drawing in a live setting in front of an audience requires high confidence in performing what you do, therefore every live performance is something I feel very confident in drawing. I don’t know how apparent it is to the viewers but I can feel the big progression in my confidence that when I started in December last year vs now. Doing creative things live is a high risk act, the 2B drawing based off a real life reference wasn’t something I could pull off months ago because I had to make lots of micro decisions about the design on the go, especially doing it in ink pen where is very minimum room for error. When you copied a reference 1 for 1, you mostly worry about forms and rendering, there is very little design decisions required. Maybe some small low risk design alterations but if you don’t want to mess up the work, it’s better off working on a 1 for 1. I’ve seen and also done it in the past where artist get creative here and there, in the end, the final product turned out to be a much inferior work compared to the original reference, that’s not what any artist want. We want to be at least on par with the reference if not better, that’s the goal since the reference already made all the hard decisions for us. We picked the reference in the first place because we liked it, that speaks for itself in terms of composition, coloring, lighting, the reference is already a success. I personally believe all my recent work I’ve done the reference justice where either I finish at the same or different style but same quality if not better than the reference. Nowadays I’m starting to experimenting with deviating from the reference a bit more, it is the countless copying off reference gave me the experience and built my confidence that I know once I locked in the design (composition, coloring, lighting etc), I can take the artwork to the finish line. Also there are lots of muscle memory and feel about producing consistent artwork. It’s like shooting a basketball, you can understand the science and the technique, but if you don’t practicing shooting balls 100000x times, you aren’t gonna be a good shooter. Copying reference to me is to build the muscle memory to make those shots.

If you are talking about creating a human character, especially female one, the steps are simple, same like you play a RPG game that allows you to create characters: you learn different hair styles, different head shapes, different facial features, different customs, mix them all together and you have an original character. The next level is to learn what characters that go with different features and so on
