Living In Hanoi Just Gets Better And Better + Birthday Gig!
Vietnam National Day was just days away so I decided to head to the Old Quarter to see if I could find out what was happening. I decided to walk and take in an undiscovered district for a banh mi and a coffee. The more I explore Hanoi, the more I love living here.
The day became night and I ended up at a local open mic night in a bar I'd never been in before where the beer cost less than 40p a glass.
BONUS: I played a short set at my local pub, The Snug, on my birthday. Enjoy :)

Shopping In Hanoi's Old Quarter - Walnuts, Coffee & Pork!
Просмотров 310День назад
As I live in Tay Ho and work in Long Bien, I don't actually get to the Old Quarter of Hanoi too often. But every now and then, I take a 10 minute bus ride to explore the most popular tourist district. I never get bored of the atmosphere and the busy streets. In this vlog, I explore the markets, enjoy some pork from Harold Baldr's favourite pork dealer and find yet another unique coffee shop. Jo...
This Is Tay Ho? More Exploring In Hanoi's Biggest Expat District

I had been living in the Tay Ho district of Hanoi for 4 months but there were still many parts I had not explored. I had been recommended a bun cha cafe in one of these areas so I headed out for an exploration. This part of Tay Ho is so different to what I was used to and there were some unexpected discoveries. Obviously, the day of exploring ended in The Snug and Whiskey Mystics & Men (my two ...

Another night out in the Tay Ho district of Hanoi took me to Hanoi Rock City for the first time. There were three bands playing. Unfortunately, I missed the first band but I was there in time to see Furr Cough play their first gig at Hanoi Rock City. I'd already seen them a number of times and they are always great. I had not seen The Hanoings before and I wasn't expecting a 10 piece jazz band ...
Crossing The Long Bien Bridge By Foot - Hanoi, Vietnam
Просмотров 224Месяц назад
The Long Bien Bridge was built by French colonists at the turn of the 20th century. It crosses the Red River and connects the districts of Hoan Kiem and Long Bien. It was repeatedly bombed by the US during the 1960s and now serves as a tribute to the Vietnamese resistance and resiliance. I had travelled underneath it many times on my way to work but in this vlog, I walk across the bridge after ...

In this vlog, I head out to Lotte Mall, Hanoi's newest mall, to do a BIG SHOP! I needed meat, fruit, veg, toiletries and lots of other essentials. All of these could have been purchased in my local area, but I wanted to check out the supermarket and see how the prices compared to buying from the street. I discovered that living in Vietnam is pretty damn cheap! Join me as I go shopping in Hanoi'...

Visiting An Old Village In Hanoi, Vietnam!

As I am now living in Hanoi, I wanted to find places that are not the usual tourist destinations. There are way too many more successful but vastly inferior vloggers than me making '10 best banh mi in hanoi' type vlogs. After some research, I decided to head to the district of Ngoc Ha where I was told I would find "a little slice of village life" right in the heart of Hanoi. There didn't seem t...

Typhoon Yagi, which had already devastated parts of China, The Philippines and coastal cities of Vietnam moved towards Hanoi on the evening of 7th September. Seeking The Hidden Treats Of Panjim, Goa
The Kinks are definitely up there with The Beatles. I sometimes worry that people will think I'm trying to be hipster by saying I prefer the former but I think I do. Village Green Preservation Society and Muswell Hillbillies are part of that eccentric English songwriting tradition that you played a part in introducing me to back in the day. Scott, I think Vietnam needs to hear you do a bit of Syd, if it hasn't already!
I have already blessed a few open mic nights with bike and the gnome.
Great to see you playing and singing again Scott. It brings back good memories. It's not easy to make a sincere comment that will be accepted as genuine after coming out with as much bollocks as I do but you play very well and you have a very good voice.
Thanks man. It's been a while since I've played and the vocal range isn't what it once was but I'm enjoying playing again.
Erm, a skipping rope made of lard, ah... crying the Bergerac theme from my kneecaps and then, um, something about Harry Belafonte pouring mushroom soup into a bugle. Sorry, I get a bit lazy sometimes and just start phoning it in.
That's more like it.
I'm sure Clob Dibland would have a few words to say about it.
Great vlog Scott! That banh mi looked nice too. 👍
Never been to Vietnam. I've considered it a bit of a third world country, and I've had my fill of them back in the day. Maybe have to visit though, looks really nice. PS. Love durian. I always try to get some when traveling in countries where it's available.
Vietnam will surprise you. Durian everywhere.
oh yes, you grab a scooter and see the town. Thanks.
Nah, I walk everywhere.
Scott what a refreshing and lovely blog hearing you sing you've still got it, you made my weekend, good job man I enjoyed it thank you for the pleasurable night out with you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Such a beautiful area you live in. All that wonderful scenery and lakes on your doorstep. You are so lucky ❤

Not trying to hijack your work bro, just going off at a tangent, again. I don't know how else to be. But are you familiar with the songs of Father John Misty? I'm expecting that you might reply with "Familiar? I wrote that song, you Asda carrier bag full of withered scrotums!". I don't listen to music as much as I should these days and I'm severely out of touch. I really love this one though- ruclips.net/video/e-aPRow5Fi0/видео.html

@@mickfield5458 plenty more vlogs coming. They might be a bit repetitive but it gets me out of the house. 😄
@ I’m not complaining keep em coming 👍
I remember how much you loved Bryn who you rightly described as "the most chilled out dog ever". I fully understand that thing about which one should I save, what can I do and when should I stop. When me and my ex-wife were exploring Havana a few years ago, we walked down an alley one day and some little half starved kids came up to us. We handed out a few coins that were pretty much a few pence to us back home but they were astonished and acted like I would if someone gave me 50 quid. It felt right and nice. Then more and more people approached us, not aggressively I should add. There were mothers holding babies begging us for money for medicine. We were conscious that we were fat white Westerners though not financially secure back home by our own standards. It got a bit complicated, mostly in an emotional way for us. I'm aware how absurd and weak it is to say that. Their lives were very hard, ours involved having to buy Lidl pesto instead of Sainsbury's. What can you do as an individual? Pretty much fuck all in the grand scheme.
India was the worst for that. A lot of scams too. You're asked not to give any money as it encourages people to keep their kids out of school to beg instead.
@@globaltreats I've never been to India but my ex missus travelled round it for a few months in the years before I met her. She had deep respect for the place and its people but she was realistic about the problems that could face an unwary traveller. I used to enjoy looking at the photos she had collected in an album. Partly because some of them showed one of her hot friends in a halter top looking a bit sweaty! Sorry, no filter. Anyway, when we were in Cuba, there were scams going off but it was quite civilised. I guess the Policía Nacional Revolucionaria kept a stern eye on things but it felt like even the tricksters had some sort of self imposed limit on their behaviour because there were better social values over there. Perhaps I'm being a bit naive in saying that but I found that I could wander the back streets late at night with my camera and never run into any trouble. There'd be a gang of teenage lads in their Ed Hardy Ts and I'd start to become anxious but then it would just be waves, smiles and fist bumps even when there was no cops around. If I tried that back home in Stannington, I'd get the fuck kicked out of me, all my belongings stolen and possibly a couple of the local toothless knuckle-draggers pulling me behind a tree for some sort of Ned Beatty/Deliverance thing. Maybe I worry too much though. When we were in Havana, the only scam we experienced was when a local couple befriended us, offered to show us the sights and took us to a bar that did the 'best mojitos'. We sort of knew what was happening but we went along with it. An arrangement with the barman to overcharge us for a cut. Ended up with us probably getting charged several times the local price but spending less than a quid for every glass of very nice booze in a lovely quaint old place. We quickly learned that if someone appeared to be making polite conversation and said "Have you been in Cuba long? and you replied "Yes" instead of "I just got off the plane", they'd laugh and wink as if to say "Ah, you've already been got" and then they'd leave you alone. The only other time was when my wife was laid up in the accomodation with food poisoning in Viñales and I went out on my own to watch a band and get wasted on some potent honey liqueur. A really pretty young lass approached me and asked me to go to a nightclub with her. I didn't know the Spanish for "I'm sure you could do better than a fat, middle-aged bald bloke love" so I just smiled and carried on staggering down the street, falling over and banging my head on things.
Not gonna write another essay this time. All I want to say is, yet another great video man and walnuts, coffee and pork are a few of my favourite things! Hoping to see references to bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, perhaps even brown paper packages tied up with string in your next drop. No need to dress up as a nun though, unless you really want to add some icing to the cake.
you needed some dipping sauce with the pork 😅
I think I did discover a small bag of sauce after I'd finished it. Didn't need it. The pork is more than enough by itself :)
@@globaltreats That's what I tried to argue the last time I was in Mai Dong but it didn't end well. The authorities were involved and some form of lifetime restraining order. Sorry, there I go again. Whoa wo wo-oh.
I enjoy the casual nature of your vlogs, fuck em.

@@globaltreats That might have been me but it was aimed at myself. Something about how 'Mai Dong' was last last useful in 1946. Apologies. One day I'll grow up...
Why the hell would you do that?
@@globaltreats What, admit my dong hasn't been used since 1946? I'm just too honest I guess.😉

the vietnamese cobain :) I was actually at the original MTV unplugged with nirvana in 1993, just by accident, and i also had a girlfriend a year later that was a spitting image of curt cobain so after that I always feel nostalgic when i hear them! one thing i am curious about is why there are so few people at all the live venues!!? It si the same here in europe. why is that?
Going back to the subject of music, I don't keep up with the new stuff as much as I should and I have no idea what I should be listening to or what Is considered essential now. However, I've always held that there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure, at least when it comes to songs anyway. I recently enjoyed listening to a track recommended by a kindly neighbour I hold in fond acquaintance- 'Mary on a Cross' by the band Ghost. I was surprised that it didn't originate in the early 1970s. A good lyric has always found savour with me- and you wrote some fine ones I have to say. I was delighted by the following line in this new offering; "If you choose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally and I see nothing wrong with that".
After watching your last video and realising that you still have a passion for music, I'm still feeling too emotional to comment at length or to give the deserved attention to this latest drop. To be honest, I watched about two minutes of this and got the impression it was going to be another one with you eating whelks fried in coriander and walking around pointing at bus stops. Normally my favourites but I thought I'd pause and come back to it another time. I'm sure it will be fantastic when I pay it due credit. There was a suggestion in your previous entry that you are still writing and performing. I'm glad to hear that as I was always a big fan. I'm not talking 'Annie Wilkes' level but I did have a couple of ideas about how to encourage you to write a follow up to Getting Scared. I don't think I ever fully expressed my appreciation but you you know how blokes are with feelings. As the young people say these days, it still slaps.
After 2 years of travelling and only having access to questionable hostel guitars, I've recently bought myself a lovely semi-acoustic. Done a couple of gigs but just playing covers. At some point, I'll be " putting on my writing head". It would have been good to see you at the wild garden gig we did for Tim's 50th.
@@globaltreats I wish I'd been there and would have been if I'd known. I slipped off the radar long before that though and around that era, I became an old and knackered father for the first time. I didn't have much opportunity to go out by myself and a screaming baby might not have been the best audience member! It must have been a while ago as Tim's about 10 years older than me and I'm older now than he was then. My maths isn't good but I'm guessing I've missed the Tim 60th gig if indeed it happened. I'm looking forward to 2033 though, just to watch him wrap his arthritic fingers round that bass and take the opportunity to change his incontinence pad during Jim's drum break in that one I used to say reminded me of the 'Blockbusters' theme. I regret my sarcasm of those days. Of course I loved the music of you 'funny people'.
@NicholasBerry-ku9rd it was in 2017. Was bizarre seeing some old faces like faz and big Dave. No Scouse Colin though. I wonder what happened to him?

I know I have a tendency to go on a bit. My closest friend, Richard, pulls me up on it. He's tolerant up to a point but he'll often say "Nick, you're sending your late night essays again and talking in a strange way". He once called me 'a Poundland Leonard Cohen'. I'll take that! Best backhanded compliment I've ever recieved. I thought I was the B&M Bargains Nick Drake or the Kwik Save T.S. Eliot. That's why it's always better to get an outsider's perspective.
I always enjoy watching your vids man.Just a couple of thoughts I've had. I guess on paper, if someone was to say it's just a guy walking the streets, chatting about what he sees, occasionally stopping for a bite to eat and a couple of beers before moving on, it might not be the best way of describing it. What's the phrase? 'Greater than the sum of its parts'. You make it look effortless because you've got a great way of doing what you do. Hopefully not being too gushy or over-analytical but I feel genuine joy from watching your stuff. Always really nice to see you enjoying a good life. And when you said something about going for a curry and hoping it doesn't get too messy, I thought that it's a brave man who wears a pale shirt with that plan in mind! Jeez, those turmeric stains, even Domestos won't get them out. And psychedelic folk rock with jazz influences? Probably my favourite genre of music. I can listen to Bert Jansch all day long.
Big up for the Crust Pizza place
Good video. I liked the girl with the net skirt on the best.
💯What a voice. Wouldn't have thought Seven Nation Army would work in that style but she's crushing it.
I'm pretty sure I saw Spud yesterday in the 'Spoons beside Barker's Pool. It would be unfair to say he looked a bit haggard and though the years had not been kind to him. I look like a haunted compost heap or Brian Blessed with a catastrophic liver disease these days so it would be unkind of me to comment about the ageing process. I felt too shy to greet him. I'm not sure he would have recognised someone who appeared at Norfolk Park 30 years ago for a brief period and talked a lot of rubbish, It was different when I saw Mick in Shakespear's a few years ago. It just felt right and so easy to talk to him. Like no time had gone by. He's definitely one of the good guys and one of the nicest blokes I've ever met.
You're likely to find spud anywhere you can buy a cheap pint.
@@globaltreats A man after my own heart, that Spud! You do have to be a bit careful in those cheap pint places though. Some people are characters and others appear to be interesting and quirky but eventually turn out to be utterly deranged. I come out with so much nonsense, you'll think I'm making this up but here goes... That same day, I was sat out the back of the Benjamin Hunstman and a very drunk man came staggering down the alley and joined me at my table where I sat alone. He was cheerful and friendly and I didn't pick up on bad vibes from him. A man of Romanian heritage who introduced himself as a serial killer (I'm guessing that he wasn't as such people don't usually openly advertise their lifestyle choices) and asked if I was one too. On reflection, perhaps I shouldn't have said "I certainly am! What are the chances of that?". He quickly became an annoying pest who wouldn't talk about anything else though there was no genuine menace about him. He called one of his friends and said he'd met someone who wanted to kill him. His friend advised him to engage in certain practices with a close family relation that I will not repeat here. He suggested that his friend do the same, hung up and then started laughing hysterically. When he approached a group of belligerent young men and started rambling on in the same vein, I realised the joke had worn thin, it wasn't going to end well and so I took the opportunity to leave. My new Romanian friend clocked me and pursued me along the alley urging me to return. I crouched behind a Sainsbury's delivery van on Division St. to evade him and like in a scene from an absurd movie, it drove off leaving me squatting there as he walked by. I found another dark alley and thought about entering a bar from the rear in order to trigger an alarm and let the bouncers deal with him. I should have stayed in well lit areas when I think back on it but some kind of hunted rabbit instinct kicked in. The door I found was locked and my heart faltered but I was able to hide behind some bins as he ran past shouting unintelligibly. I'm glad to say that was the last I saw of him. I'm too old and anxious for this sort of carry on! I'm 52, wear cardigans and listen to Radio 4. Why did fate visit me with such an unsettling incident? TL;DR- In future, I think I'll only ever drink in places where the beer is more expensive and the patrons less unhinged.
I was sad to hear about the death of Toshiyuki Nishida who played Pigsy in the first series of Monkey. He was my childhood hero and a great role model in my formative years. I can't think of a day when I haven't based my everyday actions and judgements on the fine example he set. Although the role was played by another actor in subsequent incarnations, for me, Toshiyuki will always be the definitive Pigsy and I mourn his passing.
Very informative video with the real experience. It is very very helpful. Thankyou for making this video.
For some reason the phrase "colourless green ideas sleep furiously" keeps going round and round my mind.
I'm sad to say that I was unable to fully appreciate this video. I should add that it has nothing to do with a lack of passion or insight on the part of Global Treats and more to do with a stealth video game that has recently occupied most of my attention. I can't remember what it was called after taking some of my uncle's stroke medication and stealing a bottle of advocaat from the Co-op but it had something to do with being Fish from Marillion and having to drop off ledges and whisper poetry about girls finding you a bit socially awkward into a Greek policeman's ear, from behind.

My parents sent me to Gliwice to go to school .I was born in America but they wanted me to get a good dose of Polish culture and learn the language. That was 55 years ago. The Gliwice I remember was nothing like it looks today. In the winter if the snow fell at night in the morning it was covered in a black soot layer from the coal mines. In the summer the only reprieve from the heat was to go to a concrete swimming pool which always stunk of urine. Being an american I was bullied in school and shunned. But the thing that kept me sane was the incredible food. To this day Itry to recreate the dishes that I loved back then.
In Laos they have spotters they are not police they are spotters . Once they have you on the radar your in big trouble the cops will come and then your going to have to pay. Don’t forget it’s a communist country.
You're a legend mate hahaha
Prior to becoming an avid viewer of these missives from foreign shores, I assumed that the greatest insights into other cultures could be found in the words of an overlooked traveller and philosopher known as Apache Indian. I can't say for sure whether or not that's his birthname. I have been unable to observe for myself the German girls doing the boom shak a lak nor the Japanese girls doing the boom shak a lak either. The reasons for this are too complicated to enter into on this platform but at least I have been able to make my own contribution. Indeed, for my part, I have done the boom shak a lak til the dancehall fill up.
I would imagine that to be a most splendid sight!
@@globaltreats Thank you for kind words. It's not for me to say but I think it was until it wasn't, to quote the magistrate who cast his learned view upon the case.
