i'm so glad he came out of the closet and is happy now!! i feel like hollywood is the absolutely worst place for someone who is still coming to terms with their sexuality because the public is so vicious when it comes to the sexual preferences of male celebrities. I feel like the media turn the game of "who's gay in hollywood" into a ridiculous witch hunt.

I hate the way they had to debate whether to put him through based on his looks, as if a great singer almost doesn't even make the cattle call to Hollywood week. Shame on Idol. And shame on Simon for saying no to Daughtry and to Taylor Hicks too.. Simon's track record sucked. He said no to Norman Gentle too and had to think hard about Adam Lambert. Simon was a big dope at times.

What they are looking for is a complete package...someone with a voice, a look, a body, and incredible charm and personality...they only want to tweak what is already there.

at some points, the judges were really harsh, almost to the point of cruel, on appearences. I remember there was one audition where a girl who was "slightly overweight" had a great voice. They made her stand behind the idol backboard off the view of the camera and out of their view while she sang. It just seemed awfully blatent about "You can sing but if you don't look beautiful, oh well"

Ten years ago today! Congratulations Clay! It's been an amazing ride!

These judges are such fucking morons. They should get some actual producers that know talent and are actual musicians. They got lucky with Clay Aiken even though he was repeatedly bashed for his looks. Such a shallow society. :(

kinda irritates me that the first thing they judged were his looks lol. i love clay aiken!!!! he is amazing and my favorite american idol out of all 11 seasons.

Oh Lord! I didn't watch that show but just heard about Clay, all good things about his voice. It's a shock to see what a scrawny little guy he was. He has definitely become more polished.

I don't understand why people think great voices are only blessed on good looking people. I cannot believe how these judges judge talent. Idiots! Clay showed him and years later Susan Boyle did the same. Cass Elliot, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, and many more do not look like pop idols either. These judges really need to retire from judging singing contests and get into modeling so their opinions can truly be understood by the public

That's why I hate this country, looks aren't everything. You're almost going to hold back a talent like that because hes sub par in looks?
