Unveiling the Beast: Breaking Down a Special Effects Hydraulic Power Unit
"The Green Beast" is what I first thought when I first saw this Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) Getting Dropped off at the Gold Coast workshop for a clean up, overhaul and some modifications.
Wow, what is all that "Stuff" bolted and connected to it for !!??
So... I told my brain to "Calm Down" and after I carefully studied each section, and pipe, and connection, and valve, and I eventually worked out what it was all for.... I think.

That’s an extremely great video and also, do you guys have a location in the US?
Very informative video
Do I need to use a gasket if bulkhead material is Aluminium, is there a thicknesss limitation for bulkhead?
Using a Gasket Is Probably a Good Idea, especially if the material the bulkhead is made from is not Aluminium, thickness will be limeted by the length of the bulkhead and if you can get the lock nut on as well as connect the hoses or pipes to the end of the remaining bulkhead threads.
Thanks for showing what's involved.
Glad it Helped you.
Thank you for the physical demonstration. The place I took my Case 90Xt to ,wouldn't explain anything to me about how the pump either worked or how to fix it locally. They just pressered me into getting a rebuilt / re manufactured pump . They also told me that if I didn't want a re man pu p ,that I could wait 8 to 10 weeks for an new OEM pump. Which I agreed to. I was much happier to go with a new one as opposed to something that might not be 100 %. Then 2 weeks later they fired the mechanic who kept me informed and after that they canceled the deal . So much for trusting people.
Sorry to read you have a bad experience, Strange that they cancelled the deal does not make any sense to me.
What size is that hose ? 3/8 ?
mm mm 3/8 " hose is actually referring to the internal bore of the hose not the external diameter, 3/8" 2 wire hose manufactured to SAE 100R2 Specifications will have an Outside diameter of around 19 mm or 3/4" inches, hope this helps you.
Does it have an internal relief valve?
Yes it Does, it is set to 680 bar
Hi, I have the engine off my log splitter for some other work. I was turning the pump by hand (just fiddling) and noticed it would turn freely then stop (almost like a notch) in the same place once per revolution. I can easily rotate it through the notch though. What would cause that? It was fine all hooked up to the engine last time I used it. Thank you
Could be one of many things such as residual oil in the pump or you may have a slightly damaged gear or a bent shaft.
Can u get lift and crush on the same remote
Sure can
Your videos are very informative.
Glad you like them!
Master where do you buy the kit ?
Sorry No kit available, you measure the seals and O rings and then call a seal supplier, Some sizes of Seal are not available and have to be custom made.
awesome detail, thanks!
Glad you like it!
which material is used for each part?
Generally in medium to high pressure Hydraulic Gear pumps, the Gears and Shafts are made from Heat Treated High Carbon Steel. The Casings or pump housing, End Plates and Covers can be Cast Iron, Aluminium Alloy, and or Steel or any Combination Of the above mentioned metals. Depending on the design and cost there may be roller, ball, bush or just no bearings at all.
I need pictures of BSP flanges.
Try Searching for Plumbing or Pipe Line Suppliers. Also Some Manufactures use a bolt on flanges with BSP treads for the Suction Side of the Pump. Sorry I do not have a way to send you any pictures.
Why didn’t you split the boom swing circuit instead ? This would allow qty(2) circuits working at the same time for when they upgrade to tilt / Rotate .
Good question Steve, Not sure is the honest answer, it is an option will will investigate next time we do an install. Perhaps it was to do with how easy it was to access to the supply hose for the circuit.
You cut the cylinder open ? And it's the seals and the nut piston ? you ruined the cylinder there is no way the seals or the nut coming loose would not allow the shaft to be locked in one spot.
John, if you watch till the end of the video, the rod was slightly bent as well, causing massive internal stresses that did not allow us to even loosen the gland nut.
I have a question, i have a unit similar to this, what would be the most likely problem when you connect the air fitting the pump automatically starts pumping without moving the pedal in either direction?
Sounds like the air inlet valve is broken or is Stuck in the Down position.
What is the full meaning of BSP?
BSP is a type of thread, it means "British Standard Pipe"
Thanks mate good video
No problem 👍
Wat is the name der fittigs

Thank you! @christianmitchell1450 where in the world are you?
Only hydrologic pump is working in this ?
Sorry I dont understand your question?

@Hydraulic.Online • 0 seconds ago Sorry I dont understand your question?
Good job sir
Thanks
What to do about plow hydraulic line connections to ram coming loose, leaking. Plow Is new. Is there a lock nut or jb weld option to keep fittings tight? Leak empties fluid res, making plow inoperable. Simple stuff, suggestions?
Johnny try checking the following, because it sounds like there may be a twist in the hose, or the hose is slightly twisting on connection, or the movement or articulation of the connections may be causing a twist, if there is any twist in the hose as it is pressurised it will try and straighten out cause it to loosen.
hi i own a machinery which is controlled with levers, i'd like to ask if there is any way to convert it to electric joystick with the solenoids pulling/pushing the existing distributor without the need to swap the distributor with one with solenoids preinstalled on it, the machine is an "imt 802" just so you can grasp the size of it and it's hydraulic flow/pressure and guess if there is any way to convert it, it operates at about 300 bars
Interesting Question Jack, you would have to find out the Brand and Model of the valve and then find and contact the manufacturer to see if any other parts are available to fit that model of Valve, chances are that there will be, if the Valve is not too old. An electric Joystick with proportional controls could also be possible, but you would also need to have proportional hydraulic Pilot control valves to actuate the main valve bank. Where in the world are are you. If you and machine are in Australia, send us an email to sales@mhfgc.com.au or call us on 07 5563 1982 .
Price plese
Sorry currently we are sold out. Depending of size and number of functions between AUD 3,000 to 5,000 email us at sales@mhfgc.com.au or telephone +61 7 5563 1982
Best u project i like,see u projet nex time
Thank You.
What is R2AT?
R2AT R2 = Two layers of Braided Steel Wire reinforcement, AT = Usually meant a higher OIL temperature resistance, 120 instead of 100 degrees Celcius. But it does not seem to be the case any longer because many manufacturers add the AT but Oil temperature resistance is still stated at 100 Celcius.🙄
*thumbs down* you talked but nothing else. and only a glimps of fitting types let alone explanations of fitting types for adapters and fittings
Sorry Its a "Short" 1 minute Video, it was meant to make you curious not annoyed.😳 Try these full-length videos all about adaptors , ruclips.net/video/ciZ0EDLlIik/видео.html ruclips.net/video/9960ooh6IhA/видео.html ruclips.net/video/L60ereWBPec/видео.html ruclips.net/video/qAs62e_A1yM/видео.html
Just started a new job and I’m using a newer version of this machine to show my kids what I do now. Thanks for the video! Well done!
That is awesome!
What if they are transgender?
That's why they are called adaptors / adapters, they are designed to adapt.
perfect explanation . thank you
Glad it was helpful!
how are you charging the 24v system from a trucks 12v system?
Most Japanese made trucks in Australia have a 24 Volt DC Electrical system.
5000 psi
Available in a range of pressures from negative 1 bar to 1,000 bar (14,000 psi)
Qual bateria usar numa unidades dessa
You need to use 2 x 12 Volt DC Car or small truck batteries in series with 70 Amp hour capacity or more each. 24 Volt DC is very common in Commercial vehicles in Australia.
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Ive bought (from you guys) and had great success for about 30 of these at 3/8".....but the last ones I bought 1/2" have leaked between the fitting and hose,on one hose only ,out of three (also a pin hole spray out of hose when dead headed, reliefs at 2000psi)....I redid the fitting and again leaks between fitting and hose (is the delivery hose from pump.....I know I'm not doing it wrong, could a faulty hose cause this, don't know what else to try....love your online shop, keep it going.
You need to make sure that you are using "new" SAE 100 R2 Specification hose with 2 wire bodies, and new SAE 100R1 Specification hose with a 1 wire body. A "2 wire body" will have two thin rings or grooves machined onto the neck and a "1 wire body" will have one ring or groove machined into its neck. Also we do not recommend that you use Old or used hose to make assemblies as the rubber may have perised with age, temperature, and prolonged contact with oil. You should have been given the opportunity to download assembly Instructions when you placed your order. Please let us know if you continue to have issues.

What are the pros and cons of reusable fitting vs crimp type?
Very good question, I will make a sort video about it soon.
Greetings . What is the cylinder bore?
Not sure exactly about 3 inches (75 mm)
Terrible music and volume control editing. Had to turn it off, couldn't even watch it. You have to ask yourself, why did I add an alarming level of music to this vid when it didn't need any. Oh well.
Yeah you are right, we will need to do a new updated version without music? Still it has consistantly been our most watched video for over two years now, you could of turned the sound off and turned on the subtitles.
Will 12 ton do hardwood though?
It sure will split Hardwood ! To watch this one in Action please watch the "second video" in our listing titled Cox Chipper 12 T Short www.hydraulic.online/COX-12-Ton-Hydraulic-Log-Splitter-with-6-5-hp-Petrol-Engine-p618798277
Great video except for the assinine music that comes on at about twice the volume of your narrative....dump the music and i give it a 10 out of 10, anyway that said, thanks for the help.
Noted! FYI most of our new long form videos are now without music as you just can't please everyone about your choice of music. Now if only I could keep my staff and neighbouring mechanical workshop and Stone Masons quiet all would be great in the world of RUclips video creation. 😝
Brilliant explanation of what most people say can not be done!
Thanks for the feedback Kevin, I was told the same thing many years ago as well🤓
What if you want to rotate the lever at a perpendicular (90 degrees) to the valve assembly rather than a full turn (180 degrees)?
Good Question. On some lever boxes, this may be possible for example if they have 4 equally spaced bolts. In the model in this video, this is not possible as the lever box only has 2 diagonal bolts. Please be aware that it may not always be practical to rotate lever boxes through 90 degrees on valves with more than 2 spools or handles.🤓
@@Hydraulic.Online In the case of my application it is a single spool valve. In addition can the handle go on the opposite side, next the assembly with the red tip? meaning switching the cap with the diagonal bolts and the housing of the lever?
Hello, i have a jcb skid steer with a saeur danfoss series 40 m35 pump My question is i was operating the machine for about 3 hours everything was working normally, then something in the machine caused it to jerk and shut the machine down, now when operating for like 20 minutes or so it works normal, then after that when everything starts to earm up the machine hydraulics get very weak and slow( will barely drive or turn, boom lifts slow) any ideas what i might be looking at? Have you ever heard of a complaint like that?
Thanks for the message Andrew we have heard of this issue many times. There are no short cuts in fault finding hydraulic systems, they nearly always a logical process of elimination . The First things I would do is as follows, please try and do them in the order written below as they are all interrelated. Check your hydraulic oil level and top up tank if it is low, Check the type of oil you are using and if it is the correct grade for the conditions you are operating in. Next you will need to check oil temperatures. The best way to check oil temperatures is by investing in a Infra red Digital temperature indicator they are about $30 these days. They are also very handy for using around a mechanical work shop. Check the temperature of the oil when things start to play up, if the oil temperature is higher than 70 degrees Celcius after exiting your oil cooler, then check if the cooling fan is working, If cooling fan is working, then check to make sure your oil cooler fins are not blocked with dust sand and or mud if yes carefully clean out with compressed air and running water. Point the thermometer at the oil fittings exiting the pump as well as the oil cooler inlet and outlet fittings there should be a temperature drop across the oil cooler. If all of the above proves to be Okay then a Pump Flow against Pressure Test is required to check the condition of the Pump.
Does the the flow back to tank stay open when you have pressure on or just open when something is not right 1:24
Oil will Flow back to tank any time it exceeds the relief valve's set spring pressure. When pressure drops below the set spring pressure the bypass valve to tank will close.
Excellent knowledge and explanation way thank you.
Thankyou, Glad it was helpful!
