Sugar Coated Iceberg (The Lightning Seeds cover)

On this Easter bank holiday, surrounded by chocolate, we thought a sweet treat might be in order, so with thanks to The Treetop Horns, and The Aviary Quartet (well, three of them,) we bring you The Lightning Seeds’ delectable Sugar Coated Iceberg, with grateful thanks to Ian Broudie, for all of the music.

Three gifts to bring to the manger this Christmas Eve from your pals, The Wild Birds. Eschewing eggnog and sherry slammers, we’ve been jamming and jingling so you don’t have to. We hope these three covers make your days merry and bright. Have a merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Recorded at Sweet & Low, Nov-Dec 2023 Another Black Coffee Record
What Do We Do Now? (Just Joans cover)
Просмотров 132Год назад
As autumn finally arrives here in the UK after a weird heatwave, we offer a cover of the decidedly autumnal, deliciously bittersweet “What Do We Do Now?” by wonderful Just Joans, an anthem for anyone who has ever felt guilty for leaving home, and then misses missing it. Happy Autumn to you all, from The (not migrating just yet) Wild Birds.

The Wild Birds remember the first time they ever heard this jangly belter, when someone lent our shawm/crumhorn player an Indie Top 20 VHS when he was in lower sixth. The rest, as they say, is history. Imagine this in Peaky Blinders… wait, come back. Recorded at Sweet & Low. August 2023. Thanks to the Treetop Horns who appear courtesy of Orchard Records. Great bunch of gals.
Fear No More (The Heat O' The Sun)

The Wild Birds caught the recent RSC production of Shakespeare’s late, great, (slightly cuckoo) Fairy Tale Cymbeline on Saturday last. At it's heart is the famous lyrical death-lullaby "Fear No More". Inspired we decided set this much anthologised piece to music. Life is short, people. Find what you are good at and do it with all your heart (ideally for other people). Recorded at Sweet & Low Ma...
Rain (The Beatles cover)

It’s spring in the UK so this seemed a fitting cover for a wet April. This bouncy, poppy bagatelle has always charmed The Wild Birds. Our first exposure to it was the delightful 90s shoegaze cover by Chapterhouse, but we soon discovered it was by The Fab Four, released on the B-side of “Paperback Writer”. Both songs were recorded as part of the Revolver sessions but never made it to the album. ...
Climbing to the Moon (Eels cover)

One way or another we’re all climbing to the moon. One of the Wild Birds caught the Eels on blistering form last week and felt moved to cover this exquisite bruised peach of a song about doing the impossible, one step at a time. Good luck on all of your climbs.

The Wild Birds are devoted to this band’s bruised and fragile music. If we did not quite capture the delicacy and romance of their work, we sure had fun trying. Oh now I just love this. That Hammond meets Fairground sound again; it haunts me. It made me think of the opening bars of Lisa Hannigan on the "Sea Sew' album; sqeazung that harmonium thingy in and out. It floats, the echo, the repetition, the other worldly lilt that is so 'Wild Birds'; what a lush song. Is that Clara Bow in that pic; a beautiful movie star if ever there was one. It's as if the lead voice is on earth but the echo is on the moon like in the John Lewis Christmas ad. Have they thought of this one? Those ethereal voices man; no corvids in this track.
