I had the same problem. You have to change both drive belts at the same time with only mtd belts. Aftermarket belts did not work for me. Then, adjust tension to suit you.
Maybe your variable valve timing pulley isn’t disengaging 🤔☝🏻🙏🏻💯

If you have replaced the belt... get the brown oem belt. That should solve your issue. It did for me. Now it runs and drives like new.
Love this better than hook method could you fill.pvc with cement. I already have quickcrete then don't have buy sand .

It turned out to be the Kevlar belt I purchased on Amazon. I went with the brown oem belt and it runs like new.

I bought 3 different belts. 1 OEM. Took the body off to get to the nut to adjust the tension on the belt. I took a step bit and drilled a hole above the nut while i had the body off. Put on a second OEM belt and it worked great for about an hour and a half. Took it to 2 shops no real fix. The first shop push the peddle down it moved 1/4 speed. Second place it worked about 2 hours.
If anyone can give me an idea on whats going on with the mower feel free to leave a comment. Thanks.
