I am passionate about the history of the UK, and all the odd, little places you can find hidden away. For years I have visited castles, ruined abbeys and churches, stone circles and follies of every shape and description .. but only recently have started recording some of them.
Expect short, fast little videos appearing at irregular intervals .. with little commentary, as I loathe just getting information wrong and then feeling like a tit afterwards ;)

Air Raid Command Centre, Hull
Not my usual type of video, and my first attempt at narration, so forgive any awkwardness.
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to get access to the basement of Crown House Jobcentre in Hull.
Crown House was formerly Shell-Mex House, built in the 1920s by the Shell Oil Company. The basements were handed over to Hull Corporation to be used as both an air raid shelter and as air raid command centre during the second world war, and remained so until it took damage from a bomb on 31st March 1941.
Myself, Mike Covell and Nick Holmes were given permission by the DWP to look around the basements and examine the uses they served to Hull in the second world war.

Tunstall ROC Post, E. Yorks
Просмотров 4404 года назад
Think it may be time to invest in a microphone for my S8. Forgive the wind noise, it was gusting to 15mph. This post was operational from 1958-1991, making it one of the longer serving posts in East Yorkshire. In 2002 it was subject to serious vandalism, when the hatch was forced open and the post set on fire. It was finally capped in 2015. Now it's only a matter of time before it falls off the...
Communal Air Raid Shelter, Old School House, Hull
Просмотров 9414 года назад
In 1938, the Hull City Council decided that available spaces in the city were to be used as air raid shelters and so across the city available basements were put forward. Lots of these buildings have seen been demolished, but archives showed one still extant beneath the Old School House on Witham in Hull, and the owner kindly agreed to let us go and have a look. Cheers to Nick for the drone foo...

Last Surviving Public Air Raid Shelter, Hull
Просмотров 17 тыс.5 лет назад
Constructed in 1939 by the Yorkshire Electricity Board (not the Marfleet and Drypool Tram Steamway Co as mentioned in the video), this could well be the last surviving shelter in the city of Hull, East Yorkshire. That it hasn't been demolished is just a freak coincidence. We managed to track down the owners, Northern Powergrid, who were happy for us to visit. The future of the site is uncertain...
Ruck Machine Gun Post, Lincolnshire

Tetney Lock, Nth Lincs. A rare surviving example of a ruck machine gun post. During the early 1940s, Lincolnshire would have been awash with sites, being built at a rate of 3 a day at one point.
RAF Wellingore Battle HQ, Lincolnshire
Просмотров 1725 лет назад
Little remains of the former RAF base, apart from a loyal scattering of pillboxes and a great aircraft dispersal area, most of it having been lost to agriculture, however it was the Battle HQ I wanted to see. Out of the ten or so BHQs I have visited, this has to be the one in the worst condition - partially exposed, an attempt made to demolish the steps, partly flooded and filled with rubble an...
Welton Mausoleum, East Yorkshire

.. actually it's proper name is Raikes Mausoleum, built in the early 19th Century by a wealthy banker. It's a nice stop off on the Wolds Way for anyone who may happen to be foot-plodding that way.

I was going to upload these as two seperate videos, but since they are in the same area thought I would just do them as one. I learnt about them from a video from the Fell Wanderer channel ruclips.net/video/ryjguNHnYqc/видео.html .. and just had to come and see them. They are somewhat off the beaten track and it was nice to have the place to ourselves, though maybe the dodgy weather had somethi...

St Wilfrid's Crypt, Hexham Abbey

A short tour of the wonderful 7th C crypt in Hexham Abbey, Northumberland. The story is basically thus: Wilf went off to Rome, to have a bit of a mooch around and liked what he saw of the stone shrines and temples and came back to muddy and thatchy England and took a look at all the Roman rubble laying around and thought 'I'll have me some of that', and constructed this stone crypt out of it. Codger Fort, Northumberland

The wonderfully named Codger Fort, not a billion miles from Rothbury in Northumberland. I spotted this high up on a crag (hence the wind, and loss of my voice at the end - not necessarily a bad thing) and went to take a peek. Though I didn't know it at the time, it was built in the 18th C, around the time of the Jacobite rebellion by Sir Walter Blackett and there is an argument to say it was co...

Brandesburton Air Raid Shelters, East Yorkshire
We spent a very hot sunny day on the beach at Spurn many years ago, with my wife and kids. We had a fantastic day, the kids loved it, we could see them wherever they went. You couldn't have had a better time anywhere else abroad ? We packed up in the evening, reluctantly going home, kissed by the sun and the salt air. Kids exhausted but slept like logs full of fresh air.
There's a shelter / gunners point at spurn point near the cafe/visitors centre
Very cosy for 50, must of been built by the same people who build caravans these days, and tell you they sleep 10 'comfortably' .....
It's great that you got permission to film down there as this is a part of Hull's history.
Hi from sunny hessle rd,
Where's St Wilfrid's Needle?
fun fact me and my mates put the pallete there
Nice video. That really was a basic shelter and just to keep people safe from shrapnel i imagine as its not deep and only brick so wouldnt have taken much close explosion
Interesting to see.. If you're interested in air raid shelters, there used to be lots of them in Brough, between BAe Systems and the Humber at Brough Haven , one lays behind the Buccaneer pub on a piece of waste land to the left of the car park also..
Where are the others in brough please? I beleive some were knocked down near the airfield where the houses are being built but are there others?
Thank you for your post, it was really interesting. I remember sitting on top of this structure in the early sixties. I was about six or seven. ( I am sixty seven now). It was clearly visible and a great place for kids to explore. There was a English Electric Lightning and a vampire carcass a bit further to the east near the end of the runway that was used by the Station fire crew for training. I spent many weekends there, my Dad was the CFI of the Lincolnshire Gliding Club as it was known then. T21, T31 Olimpia, Dart were the aircraft that were flown at the time. Happy memories, but things change beyond recognition after my last visit there (60 years ago). Once again thank you.
I dont live far from there. Never knew it was there.
Looks very atmospheric
I believe this is actually a OP ,the battle hq is on private land on south end just before you leave the village, you can see the watchtowers through the trees
Great stuff. Keep up the good work...
What an amazing survivor, and a tribute to the citizens of Hull who suffered so badly back then.
We lived at Anlaby Park and as a teenager I helped my dad demolish our air raid shelter. It was easily as big as this one.
My family lived on Beverley high Road. There still is an air raid shelter in the garden.
Yo James. I noticed a thread on Hull: The Good Old Days last week which mentioned surviving air raid shelters so went for a little stroll around and noticed a half dozen or so surviving 'domestic' shelters, mostly put to secondary uses now, sheds and such. Was yours a concrete cube type?
@@Sorme1001 It was brick with a very substantial concrete roof. It was still there when I last visited Hull about 12 years ago, and was in very good condition. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't still be there.
@@Sorme1001 I think I have replied already but in case I haven't, it was brick with a very thick concrete roof. When I last visited Hull about ten years ago, it still existed. The address is 723 Beverley High Road, now a medical practice. My grandfather built the house and the shelter.
Can anyone go down into the crypt?
Hi Hannah, yeah it's open to the public without needing to book or pay. It's a lovely place. 👍
How do you find this place?
It's Sunk Island Battery, in a large clump of trees next to the Humber. Pretty sure this 'bunker' has been demolished now though.
not even close very small I really think I need to Very depp with the interest not be visible to anyone and then I have a corridor yes some few doors inside the storage food and nice size to family. Living room beds and toilets and off course a kitchen
I big good Endra to make I really good size Bunker
Good morning, I would love to check this out to see if it's still there is there anyway of getting InTouch bud
Hiya Chris, sorry for the long reply. You can message me on FB under MADSketch (my page for little sketches I do), but am pretty sure this place has since been demolished. If you check out ALW Research Team's video on Sunk Island Battery, am sure they filmed a snippet of it as just a hole in the ground now.
@@Sorme1001 il get in touch bud
Very cool mausoleum
Cracking video, thanks guys
I reckon if there ever had been an attack on theses places a few carefully lobbed hand grenades down the entrance, emergency hatch or even through one of the slits,m the compression would have taken out everyone inside or at least burst their ear drums. Fascinating history though. I have been exploring a lot in the Falklands and I have taken video of artefacts of the Falklands railway including about 10 littlemside tipping wagons, some rail and a complete set of track points along with some Bren Gun Carriers chassis (mini tanks) which were bought cheap after WWII any farmers, all lying in mud and slowly rotting away. I also found a lot of remains of the partly demolished ESRO satellite tracking system head gear and tower (a very early prerunner of ESA) which again was just left to rot away in the peat. Dine there they have so many amazing artifacfs like the big Iron Lady Elizabeth sailing ship just rotting away … they have no interest or money in preserving anything down there which is a real shame but saying that, they don’t destroy much and just leave things for 57 year old kids like me who love recording history to explore and climb all over. A bit like Britain was innthe 60s and 70s when there was so much shit to explore before it all got demolished and cleared away.
Great video me and my dad have been down to Kilnsea and spurn point quite a few times over the years we love it down there also we have been to see all the pillboxes up and down the coast
Nice find hopefully stays forever.
Lovely bit of film , thank you x
This the croxton next to thetford?
No, it's the Croxton near to Fakenham.
Go to the original craven St 'the railway arches 'where the embankment finishes 'the arch there was bricked up for public use as a air raid shelter during ww2
Think I know where you mean Daniel, will go have a look when am next in the area! 👍
I think there used to be one of these near West Bulls car park.
Well done, nice to actually see inside a BHQ for a change. Never saw one yet that wasn`t flooded to one degree or another.
Sounds like a woman says ''Hello'' likely human. However it sounds like it's down there with you. 0:58
I lived just round the corner in Crowle Ave. Hotham street,Ferries street and Crowle street itself . I delivered papers all over this area as a kid back in 1959/63. Mick Covill...mmm rings a bell?
Will do HB 👍
most interesting to see this as I have often visited Hexham Abbey in the past but never seen inside this crypt
I remember it having the metal lid (30 years ago) that was padlocked shut. Think it was similar to the one at Holmpton that's now gone
I was brought up in kinneff and know where this is but have never visited it. Thanks for the video.
How do you find it! I have tried twice!
I lived in Goxhill from around 1991 -95. Used to walk my dogs all around there and the old airfield etc. it was all pretty much intact, the runways for example had not been dug up, the control tower was there, air raid Anderson shelters, aircraft tie down points etc. That BHQ structure was completely visible and free of brambles etc back then, also dry. You could get in fairly easily. Shame it’s all gone and been reclaimed by nature.
very pretty. NASA cited the clip today
I've visited this same one. I know of another communal shelter in Bridlington that I'd be happy to show you. Really well preserved. It's a sensitive location so I shouldn't say much here publicly. Is there a way I can PM you?
In from bridlington and didn't know we had one where is it plz
Cheers 👍🇬🇧
Built as per History Bum's comment, but also as a memorial to his wife. From the top you can see the church were she and he aslo are buried. Charles Boot, a building contractor, built Pinewood Studios.
Cheers Simon. Forgot all about this video until it just cropped up again now. I seem to recall when we were driving through Sheffield we saw some signs for Boots contracting, or some of associated building contractors? Same one?
Very interesting. 👍
Where is this in Hull?
I guess that smells like shit
I went to Chiltern Street "Infants" as a tiddler. Long gone sadly, but looked much like this one, typically Victorian. Also my "Junior" school in Gordon Street around the corner, that's gone too. I think there is a brick column still extant with the legend "Girls" or "Boys" I forget which. The good old days of segregation eh? Even my senior school Riley High has gone too, and it was less than 50 years old. I started when it was brand spanking new, but sadly it is no more. Lived in Australia now for nearly 48 years but get back to Hull occasionally. Thanks for sharing these great reminders of the city of my birth....
Amazing great video
Thanks, nice of you to say.
Still looking for this place any advice many thanks keep up the good work
