NES Shadowgate playthrough w/ EXPERT LORE commentary
Просмотров 5 тыс.5 лет назад
My New Year's stream of Shadowgate for the NES. PS. I am incorrect in a few places, there IS a Shadowgate universe, and a "second quest", with the Shadowgate Comics and "Beyond Shadowgate", among others. I should have made my homework, but take this run for what it is, only focusing on the NES game. INSTAGRAM: @gamecalendar TWITCH: twitch.tv/gamecalendar

    Growing up in the late 80s and early 90s, Legend of Zelda (OG and LTTP) and this were the basis of most of my outdoor adventures. Also Platoon (movie & game) and Tour of Duty (TV series). I had many grand adventures in the forest and ridge behind my house. Even had a creek with two huge boulders that was like a gateway or something. Better times for sure.

    Oh, and my favorite 'funny text' is if you try to "Use Self". The game scolds you for your proclivities, haha. There actually is a way to beat the game without the cloak. If you save the game in the fire room, and then die, you basically respawn in the fire room but it doesn't push you out. I think there's also a way to get past the sphinx by just immediately using one of the items on it BEFORE it asks the riddle - I don't remember which object it is, but basically one of them will always work if you do it before asking the riddle. So, if you care about your inventory staying slim you can do that. You can also dump a bunch of stuff in the burning oil, and I think in the acid fountain as well. I heard of a Kickstarter recently I am wanting to check out where they got the info/files for a planned sequel that never got made and remade it in the old school style. My son is also really into retro games and we play this game together a lot, so I think I might get it for him (as I think it did end up getting made).

    For me the part I got stuck on (and had to finally look up) years ago was the fact that the sphere is a multi-use item. It never even occurred to me that you could go back and get it, or that the torch would be powerful enough to melt the lake. Regarding the references, 'Philistines' is a reference to David and Goliath. 'Gehenna' is also the Hebrew world for 'Hell' and is sometimes mentioned as a fire/furnace.

    You forgot to drink the liquid from the green pot in the laboratory with the mutated dog. I think after you do, you grow blue hairs on your hands, but it doesn't kill you. You can also TORCH the tapestry hanging in the banquet hall room, the one it says you can't reach. Or you can jump into the lava in the "Motari Riseth" room (brings up some funny text). ALSO you can press SELECT in each room and it will give you a hint of what maybe to do.

I went through the entire game like that (I even lit the black oil in the Firedrake room back up and it did me in, LOL. There are other things I found out you can do. You can try to drink the green pot liquid TWICE, but it won't let you and it'll say something different. And you can use the HAMMER on the MIRROR, then LOOK at the mirror, heh heh. Peace out!

    58:03 It's very realistic that you got caught up in reading at the library until your torch started to go out and you were reminded there isn't much time. I really enjoyed reading through the books, thank you for the lore! 1:19:08 Today I learned there is a stone called black sapphire. I thought it was as oxymoronic as a blue ruby or a white emerald. 1:35:48 Your mom used to watch you play this game? Did you play together or just in the same room? You know, if you run out of torches, the logical thing to do would not be to fall on your face and die but to crawl back to the last place where you stole a torch. Since they apparently last about two hours, it is probably somebody's job to make the rounds and replace them. Perhaps that person gets scared and goes home once they see someone has been going around breaking mirrors and stuff.

    • @gamecalendar187

      I think it was mostly to help with the english walkthrough that was eventually needed to beat the game :) I agree, I'm thinking the hero has some kind of severe darkness-triggered balance issue.

  • @karlk5801
    @karlk5801 Год назад

    47:45 You got it right with your David and Goliath reference. Goliath was a Philistine, making war on the Israelites. I like how they skip right from that classical reference to a cyclops pun on "Bulls-eye!" There's a theme in the game that cleverness is more important than might; the sword is never useful except for this coup de grace, the spear only gets you through one time. I thought you made the best moral choice by giving the cyclops a second chance before murdering him. I was surprised to see the troll come back; I thought that the lack of a hitting the bottom crash meant that the Grim Reaper was there to catch him. 49:54 If the Castle Shadowgate now looms before you, where have you been all this time? The waiting room? 51:14 That's really funny about opening the bucket. I already watched an entire walkthrough of this game but I am enjoying yours much more.

    • @gamecalendar187
      @gamecalendar187 Год назад

      Thanks for the comments, that cyclops pun went right over my head. :) That's an interesting take, you also don't fight the gargoyles, hellhound, wyvern, werewolf, dragon or Warlock Lord "head on". Instead beating them cleverly with the spell, holy water, star, arrow, shield and staff respectively. I'm glad you felt I gave the cyclops every chance to stand down before I offed him, feels like I can sleep with a sound conscience now. In my mind, the cyclops is guarding the main castle (looks like he's in a courtyard after all) while the part before that is a minor, less epic structure. Or a complex that's built like a wall around the main castle.

    • @MasterZebulin
      @MasterZebulin 7 месяцев назад

      @@gamecalendar187 You're close about the castle part: The part you just went through before the courtyard is actually the passageway through the Gatekeeper Mountain. That's why it has so many defenses. I mean, it's called _Gatekeeper_ Mountain! What did you think it was!?

When I was younger, I read a complete walkthrough of the game in an issue of Nintendo Power (when the game was remade for the game boy color) and it sounded like the coolest damn game, ever. Just today I rediscovered Shadowgate. Interesting lore and a badass castle. Good video.
