    Great story with powerful lesson 👏. The truth of the matter is that we all see 👀 things from our own personal perspective, understanding, and experience. Trouble is that we all have different perspectives, understanding, and experiences. So, none of us can claim to be right all the time and about everything!

    With this guy I always wonder if its just Japanese that has fallen out of use, or at the time of writing, romanization of the Japanese language hadn't begun yet. Stuff like "Kwaidan" instead of "Kaidan" or "Ojouchu" instead of "ojouchan" Either way, Hearn is really good at drawing you in with how he wrote.

    • @ShubertReads
      @ShubertReads 6 месяцев назад

      There are a bunch of different romanization systems (and many variations). The most common one nowadays I believe is called "Hepburn", but I'm not sure exactly what system Hearn used. It would be interesting to find out!

    • @TotemoGaijin
      @TotemoGaijin 6 месяцев назад

      @@ShubertReads Well, Perry forcing the country open was only about 50 years give or take before Hearn got there. I guess that's plenty of time to figure a system out? I don't even know how you go around sussing out a language that hasn't been seen in something like 200 years, lol. It didn't take us long to bastardize Nihon/Nippon to Japan after all, haha. Edit: Seems Hepburn made his system in 1867

      @@ShubertReads Apparently its based on an archaic version of the word where it was spelt as "kuwaidan" instead of "kaidan" or something along those lines. Since the stories were historical, he thought that version would be more appropriate.

      Thank you so much for reading this, Shubert. I've been intrigued by this story ever since I heard it. I still can't seem to settle on a final answer. For me that is the beauty of this story. How can we presume to know the heart of this stranger we are reading about without putting our ourselves in her shoes? If we put ourselves in her shoes and answer the author's question, are we not projecting our own desires and biases onto the Princess contrary to the intentions of the author. Perhaps that's why the he left the question unanswered. Maybe that's the point of the story itself; that we can never truly know the heart of another. I'd be interested to hear what you thought.

    • @ShubertReads
      @ShubertReads 6 месяцев назад

      @@kanotrust4991You're very welcome! Glad you liked it. I agree with your interpretation, the point of the story is to be open ended and force the reader to decide, it's not a riddle that can be solved by one correct answer but an exercise in story analysis. All stories allow this to a certain extent but this one decided to blatantly highlight the agency of the reader to make a choice for themselves, which makes it a really good one for students. If I had to choose an answer: the lady spends very little time thinking about how much she loves the man and spends much more time thinking about her jealousy and rage, so I reckon she's justifying why she's about to let her lover be eaten. 🐯

    • @kanotrust4991
      @kanotrust4991 6 месяцев назад

      @@ShubertReads Wow! This is such a good perspective. I am inclined to agree with you. I hadn't paid enough attention to how focused she is on her jealousy rather than her love for the man. are there any other short stories you'd recommend, that are as captivating/thought provoking?

      @@kanotrust4991 I'd like to think a lot of the stories I've read on my channel are similarly captivating and thought provoking but it depends on your tastes :) I think you might enjoy Kafka's "Before the Law", it's the kind of story you can read over and over and continue meditating on its meaning forever! Thanks for the recommendation! I'll take a look for a version of 'The Scorpion and the Frog' in the public domain. According to wikipedia it was originally from a 1933 Russian novel, but based on a much older Persian fable. There is a very similar, ancient story called 'The Frog and the Mouse' from Aesop's fables.
