Hagwil Yin — Walk Softly
"The Gitxan and the Tsimshian people - we have stories about how the salmon saved us. They came to save us when we were starving. All we have to do is look after them. Look after the habitat and be careful about how we walk.
In our language, we say, hagwil yin. That means, walk softly. When you're walking on the land, you make sure that you walk softly. Don't destroy everything that's behind you."
- Kirby Muldoe, Hup Wil Lax A, presenting at Sharing our Knowledge Conference "Building Our Connections with Elders from the First Nations", held at Chief Shakes House in Sept, 22.
