Project Crystal Jane
Добавлен 4 апр 2010
Hello beautiful people!
In 2018 I set off around Australia with nothing but a cheap bike, a trailer made out of a bathtub, and some camera gear. I was setting off on a 20,000km cycle in support of beyondblue and mental health awareness. The year before, I had a breakdown and lost everything, and this was my recovery ride. Unfortunately I only got about half way around when Covid hit.
Now I’m starting a new chapter along with my brother and nephew restoring my dad’s yacht ‘Crystal Jane’. Dad built her when we were growing up and she needs a lot of love after He struggled with maintenance in recent years.
Hope you enjoy the journey!

First I have to confess to know nothing about restoring steel boats. When there is masses of rust and some with obvious considerable lessening of the structural thickness worry how that can be restored, and equally important brought back to a safe thickness and surface, Why do they not sand blast it, or is that what follows after welding the holes and stuff? What would then be the finish process and sequence to hold off corrosion in the future?
Welcome! Yeah there are areas that will need re sheeting, and others that can be welded or filled with epoxy. Once the welding is done we will have it sandblasted. Unfortunately the boat was left in the water too long and all the anodes were eaten which caused heavy pitting in the hull. A steel boat really needs to come out if the water for new anodes every few years.
Hey Mike! Man, hats off to you boys! That welder and hammer are sure getting a workout! Great way to start my day as I wait for the sun to appear and I head out for a week on my bike! After watching you two, somehow the 1000+ kms in front of me seem way easier than what you’re doing! Great job brother, loving the series and the videos! My very best to you both! Cheers from a sunny warm part of Canada! Rick
Thanks brother! Great to hear from you. Hope your trip goes well!
I remember that day we put the masts up. I had some money coins on me and put some under the mast.
Yeah that was a lifetime ago!
It’s going to look fantastic!
Slowly slowly
Rust and more rust. But if you don’t start you will never finish. And now you have started the end is going to be there.
Yeah lots of rust. Baby steps.
Hi Michael it Aunty Jenny S Venema , I’m enjoying your videos gee the boat has got old ,just like me
Glad you like them! Yeah she’s needs some tender loving care.
So you are going to paint the deck pink ?
With purple polka dots!
Don't underestimate the welding footage. People love seeing restoration of boats. Keep up the great job. Love from your cousin Stephen. ❤ And tell your dad and mum not to be shy and on camera. I would love to see them. They have a great personality.
Good on you guys, doing a great job.
Hi everybody! If you have subscribed and viewed the channel videos please do click on the like button . It helps the creator, encourages more publishing and is a thanks for is effort. Good day folks!
I like what you say because you just see other people just welding and they say there it is but you explain why you do things the way you do and it’s great information. Yes must first find all the holes in the deck then move on to inside. Are you putting something on the new Weld plates so they don’t start rusting ?
Thanks. Yeah we try to explain why we do certain things. I’ll grind the welds tomorrow and treat them with fish oil which will keep it rust free until we’re ready to paint.
Great job boys!
Thanks brother
One step at a time!!!
Yep. My mum said the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time 😆
If I was you,I would move my car away from the boat.
Yeah might have to
Love what you are doing for your mum and dad. They deserve a win. Love from your cousin Stephen.
Great work guys. The Samson post needs to be a lot bigger, ( if you are using say 25 mm line)what I mean is considering say doing three turned around and then more to finish it off. I will show you what I mean when I come down.
Sounds good mark.
I remember taking out the old washer when the boat was at Pittwater and it was so heavy. So we decided to just take it apart as you did with the fridge. What we found in side the washer that made it very heavy was two concrete blocks. Which we took then out it so just so easy to left out the way you did. I thinking of coming down on Monday, will call Sunday night.
Well done!
Thanks brother. Your videos are very calming btw.
@@ProjectCrystalJaneI’m rethinking the entire RUclips thing honestly, I’m glad you feel that way for real! Take good care Micheal, love the name change, cheers brother wish I could help you guys, that’d be a real adventure for me!
What can I say, good on you boys and see you on Sunday night and not looking like that in the video. LOL
Well done boys!

No I was back home for work. Joff and I are sailing with dad to lakes entrance.
What are you doing for your dad and mom is great. I hope they take the opportunity once it's done up and just enjoy life. They definitely deserve it.
Outstanding
Bon voyage!
The camera doesn't show the true size.
Yeah she’s a big girl lol
I’ve been waiting for years to see Crystal Jane set out from The Cove under sail! Where will she go for repairs? I’d love to follow her progress.
We’re heading for Hastings in Victoria.
He built that? Wow, very cool! This will be a great revival! Looking forward to it Micheal!
He sure did. We helped a bit too lol. Yeah lots of work ahead of us.
Hey Micheal! Great seeing another video upload! I was thinking about you last week, I was wondering if this was going to happen. This could be a very good series for you, for the channel and obviously for you and your dad! I’m really looking forward to watching, I love watching other people work ;) Cheers brother, drop me a line anytime man, you know where I am, Rick
Thanks brother. Yeah I thought so too. It’ll be lots of fun! Hope you’re well
That sounds fun and good family time also. Can't wait to see what it looks like.
Hey brother. Yeah looking forward to it!
This sounds amazing! After I hurt my ankle I took up kayaking instead of hiking and it has really helped me cope with loss of every day mobility. The water is my happy place!
Kayaking is so fun. I used to kayak a few years ago. My best experience was sitting about 5km off shore on a perfectly calm night. I couldn’t see the horizon because the water was so calm, which made the stars reflect beautifully. A top 10 life experience for sure.
Have had similar experience, makes you feel real small when all you see 360 degrees is water that fades into the sky! But I think my favourite so far has been with bioluminescent algae either a calm evening bracing in the water looking at the northern lights and playing with the algae or that one time the whole ocean was glowing with every breaking wave - seems like a fairytale!
Anymore Camper videos coming up?
Lots of videos coming up!
How are you doing on your sobriety?
Pretty good. The occasional hiccup, but nothing major. Thanks for checking in!
Happy New Year mate. This is your year. Go get em. I know I'm excited to see what you get up to.
Thanks brother.
Happy New year! May it bring you lots of simple things to enjoy!
Thank you. Happy new year!
Happy New Year Micheal!
Happy new year!
Wow Micheal, beautiful!
Thanks Rick. I used to have a lot more. I’ll have to get the camera out.
Beautiful! I'll check back and watch it again when youtube has finished rendering more than the 360p quality.
Could be that I used some low res thumbnails. Whoops!
