    Happy 2025 Rachel !!! Let me put it this way. Whenever you get the Sunday Scaries of the looming Monday after break always remember the kind of Sunday Scaries that some children get for the fact that they will return back to being forced to go to school everyday under penalty of law again. Granted, if your students love you or are on the same page as you are and look forward to seeing you everyday then start knocking on wood and also it's probably a sign that you are doing something right. It is what it is and you are not alone and remember that you are half way there to the end of the school year. "Keep moving forward". - Walt Disney - Dwight

    • @kcm7134

      Um…what? I have never known a kid who ever felt like that.

    • @djthereplay
      @djthereplay 17 дней назад

      @@kcm7134 Well, some of them. It depends on who you've got and what their family/personal dynamics are and where their interests are. If they are on the same page as the teacher then if you are their teacher start knocking on wood. I may need to reframe a few things I said but we live in a compulsory educational system and that means that at a certain age, children have to get some sort of schooling or education and for the parents their is choice for them in there but still kids must get some sort of schooling either at home or they must go to school by law regardless if they are on the same page with it or not. Basically what I mean is that adults have choice where kids don't. - Dwight

    • @kcm7134
      @kcm7134 17 дней назад

      @ Based on my 30 years of experience, the vast majority of kids enjoy coming to school. Some may claim they don’t, but that is usually not true.

    • @djthereplay
      @djthereplay 17 дней назад

      @@kcm7134 Then you must be doing something right with them. Also, it's amazing how things have changed over the years. Behavior Management in the classrooms ad in the schools have become more about recognizing the positive and also trying to help kids and empathize with kids more and as messed up as the system is that is a good thing and also, today's kids probably haven't seen a good funny cartoon on television at home nowadays too.

    • @kcm7134
      @kcm7134 17 дней назад

      @@djthereplay I work very hard to make school a positive place for kids. This year has been more challenging for various reasons. Behavior management in public school is a joke right now. Focusing on the positive is fine, but the empathizing is taken to a point where kids are often not required to take responsibility for their behavior or experience any consequences for poor choices. This leads to out of control kids and an epidemic of teachers leaving the profession.

    I feel your pain of TRS not recognizing some years of your teaching. When I bought back some of my sub years I had missed one day for a stomach bug while longterm subbing, it cost me a whole service year. It didn't matter that all my other years were well over the required days because it was calendar year based not average of days worked. And in what other profession do you paid for service years when the district should have paid you?? I am in the retired rehiring process and the details are arcane. They can take your TRS check if the district abuses you by keeping a retired teacher in a vacant position but the district gets fined if they rehire you.

    Public school is just babysitting not about academics. Kids get moved on without needing to attain academic standards. There are many kids in high school that can’t add subtract multiply or divide, but they were moved on to the next grade level. Just shows public school is just babysitting. Parents enroll their kids halfway through the quarter and not have to do all the work before that while the other kids have too, which is part of the course and essential to understanding the concepts because public school is just babysitting not about academics. Parents treats teachers as babysitters not professionals. Telling them what to do like they don’t know their job who has their degrees.

      I don't think she is saying give up. She wants you to understand how it affects us from the teacher's end to keep trying and not always blame ourselves if a student is not responsive to our approach. Everybody is going through something. I think she is saying learning and effort can't be achieved without interest, motivation, and effort. It can't be one sided. You can't keep expecting of someone what they don't care about and are unwilling to expect of themselves. That doesn't mean we don't keep hoping, trying, or praying. It just means that at some point, our efforts may be best served not beating ourselves up or believing we are failures if we have tried our best and there is still no change.

      I get the written plans completed on Tuesday. The rest of the week I work on gathering materials, making copies, etc. My grade level team splits up the planning, I am only responsible for planning Writing & Word Study. I will say anytime there are new standards or curriculum, it takes longer.

    I have the second hardest group I’ve ever had this year. The difference is that this group was intentionally put together this way by people who should have known better. I was also given a schedule with no time to build community. The last time I had a hard class, I left my school. This time, I’m working on leaving the regular classroom for a resource position. I can’t sacrifice my life anymore and the stress is affecting my health.

      It’s definitely hard to feel like your needs are being met when you are being asked to work with a group that is beyond what is reasonable. I'm glad you're making plans to find a better position. You are so right about not being able to sacrifice yourself for a system that doesn't support us.

    Planning ahead? That’s hilarious! They changed our math AND language arts curriculum this year.

      Oh that's so hard! Our language arts curriculum changed so we are definitely not planned ahead in that. But when both change...I can't imagine. I'm so sorry!

    I can’t teach math in small groups because we have just under an hour and I have 28 students. This year I can rarely get anything done when the kids are working because I have so many kids who don’t stay on task and/or won’t stop talking. Also, I have kids that are constantly at my desk for the tiniest thing. This group has the shortest attention span and the least focus. Every day is exhausting and frustrating, and I have been teaching in public school for 25 years.

      I know how frustrating that is! Some years are like that where the group you have doesn't allow you to get anything done.

    I’ve been teaching 23 years and everything you said is spot on. Thank you for your honesty.

    Thank you so much for posting this. I am a first year teacher and needed to hear these things. I teach 5th grade Science, which got a new curriculum this year. I try to plan ahead, but I'm still developing strategies to do that while trying to keep work-life balance. When did you feel you got good at planning ahead?

      To be honest, anytime there is new curriculum, new standards, a grade level change...getting ahead is really hard. Each year you teach the same grade level, subject, curriculum it gets easier.
