Afterlife Guitars
Великобритания
Добавлен 19 июл 2020
A man on a mission to take his passion for woodworking and guitars and turn it into a legacy. My aim is to build a peer mentoring program where I can teach people how to build guitars. But in the meantime I'm learning my craft and getting the name Afterlife guitars known across the world
Let's see how this sounds on my Marshal Amp #jurgscup #jurgscup23 #cigarboxguitar #3stringguitar
An embarrassing video where I test this guitar out on my Marshal Amp. I'm not the best on open tuning and I don't have a glass slide. I used our blender instead lol
Thanks for watching the support is very much appreciated 🙂👍

We did it 🤩🤘 thanks to all those who watched throughout and if you're just joining us for this episode. I'll do a proper demo for you guys soon I'm doing an event with a group (peer mentoring teachers) next week and I'm bringing this along. For those of you who don't follow my Instagram account.... I'm currently on Peer Mentoring training as one of my dreams is to open up a school. A charitable...

We're getting close to finishing this one woo hoo 😜 I decided to use my guitar top like a scratch plate. So you access your electrics by unscrewing the top. I still need to smooth out the frets at the ends. But apart from that I don't see too many jobs left to do. Obviously I have to do a lot of sanding before applying finishing oil. But once you get to that point 👉 you know you're well on the ...

I said in my last video (in the description) I was only working on the traditional Cigar Box Guitar Build. For the rest of the month, however I need access to the planer, at the workshop. That's currently only running on a Tuesday between 10.00am and 1.30pm. Today is a sunny 😎 Sunday (too hot for me) but I'm in the home workshop anyway, I dragged my fan in with me. So I'm installing a piezo pic...
Traditional Cigar Box Build

Today's episode includes me installing some springs on the neck. I've seen @PuckettCigarBoxGuitar do it and it looks super cool. As soon as I got them attached I could tell the neck was carrying more vibration so it could help with sustain? I also drilled out my jack sockets.... yeah you heard me correctly. I'm not using a switch so I need two Jack sockets for each pickup, one being a piezo. It...

I flatten a piece of cocobolo for a fretboard It's for another cigar box guitar but box shaped this time. And I talk about the jurgscup progress. I recently lost footage so couldn't share with you but the good news is you didn't miss much. There's plenty more to do but I'm waiting until I can afford to order the hardware. Piezo pickup is going under the lid so I can't glue the top on yet. So it...

Thankyou I'm jurgs sister in law
Good. Eu fiz uma também 😅
Have you? Can you send me a link?

Oh God. When I first started making guitars I sent the bearing into the output jack hole more times than I care to mention when adding a roundover, that's a great idea!
Thanks man, yeah I made that mistake on the pirate themed guitar I'm yet to put back together lol
What do you think about the two jack sockets 😂 I think it's lazy but ingenious. Can't wait to hear it with two amps one either side of me
@@afterlifeguitars Yeah, I like the idea. Could even run one through a octaver or something :)
This is my favorite build so far and it's a honor it's landed on the Jurgs Cup build. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to create a newish shape. It's based off an explorer with some modifications made. Also had lots of fun figuring out how to simplify a build so it's a similar construction to a cigar box guitar. It is after all a 3 string. I'm excited about getting it tuned up and intonated well......then we can hear this baby in action on the amp. Thanks again for watching and supporting this channel. Lots of super designs planned for the future also got a little business idea 💡 brewing so watch this space
Ok so watching this back I've decided what I'm going to do about access to the controls. Instead of creating cavities from the back. I'll just fit the top like you would a scratch plate with everything attached to that. So in layman's term screw the top down instead of gluing it and have the controls accessed by removing the top.
Looks awesome babes great job 🤩❤
Looks awesome babes great job 🤩❤
Looking good! 👏
Thanks man gonna have fun with fitting the piezo pickup. Can't do much now until the hardware has been paid for and acquired lol but I have other things keeping me busy so it's okay 👍 I need to sit down one day and binge watch all your Jurgs Cup videos. I'm not very good at watching when my phone notifies me of a video as there's too many to watch everyone. Me and the Mrs Afterlife guitars will probably watch it on the TV when we're feeling lazy and binge watching RUclips
You should be able to access Google drive from your phone (if you don't have access to a computer).
I do mate yeah but every time I try to download it it fails
I'll try to do it again and screen shot the results. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Not very tech savvy tbh that's why I got rid of the laptop.
Thought I’d pop this on before I go work on mine I dig the inlays
@saulgoodeguitars sorry mate RUclips studio let me know you had commented. Thank you even my mom's comment has gone unanswered
awesome! Youre a very talented Guy. And Hello Rusty, Meow! Lol ;D X
Ahh you’ve got love that UV resin! 👏👏👏
@kingbespokecreations I'm a big fan and it's thanks to having a partner that drabbles with this stuff
I’ve yet to make one of these but I’m going to have too
For sure I wanna try all types of instruments later down the line
That paduak is gorgeous
It really is that's what swayed me to cut it all into strips instead of removing some waste for weight relief
Looking good Ryan. Would you ever consider doing a voice over to explain what you're doing. What was that patch you used to piece the wood together? Xx
@Gemgemz26 yes I do sometimes explain what's going on in the video but sometimes I don't. Especially when my phone memory is nearly full which results in me rushing to get the video edited. So some videos I treat more like a short. That patch thing was a really strong tape it's super sticky 💪 I originally put that wood into clamps but it wouldn't sit straight and flat. So I glued it together on a flat surface making sure that where the glue lines were I covered the surface with plastic sheeting and that strong tape. So it wouldn't stick to the wood underneath. I Also used the clamps to make sure each plank was flat against the surface. Some people use those bags that suck the air out to keep their glue ups flat. Would love to buy something like that in future as it's fast and easy to use
Good work mate, construction is a bit like the crimson 2020 build
Thanks mate yeah I guess I get a lot of inspiration from Ben but try putting my own spin on it. The joints are not the best but nothing I can't hide lol. Not sure how I'm going to fit the neck yet? I'll get to that once I've built it.
@@afterlifeguitars ah don’t worry about the joints, have sound ports 🤣
@@saulgoodeguitars lmao 😂 or use them for pick holders
Well done! BTW, if there's one thing I learnt from my last two builds, it's that I should have much larger control cavities.
I hear that, I think I'll do mine similar to the way crimson do them in future
You have got me very curious now. How will you use that for the tele? Hmm....
All will be revealed 😉
Awesome can not wait to see wot they turn into
All shall be revealed one day 🤔😉🤘
A tele would be nice. I was actually thinking of a tele for my #jurgscup build too. :)
Lmao strange how things turn out, yeah I might change the shape at the bottom but keep the Tele signature shape up top
@@afterlifeguitars Should be an interesting build.
Thanks man
hi my man, thanks for answering comment love your intro, music is just so flavorful --and I love that p-bass. Sure do love your shows and what a great intro truly!
Aw man I appreciate that thank you so much. Yeah I try to make the video's as entertaining as I can with the music. It's all recorded and edited on my phone
Your music is fabulous!
Thanks but it's not my own music it's free to use from RUclips music library
@@afterlifeguitars great taste in sound. Love this name, I was designing none working THOTH Egyptian guitars. I can imagine you designing a bunch of DOGMAN, CAT, and others and doing display. Maybe even talking about the 16 notes of a 10 string with Egyptian style in rock American music. Wow, the crowds that would flock. It is not hard either, there is a lot of shape you ca put in hollow and semi-hollow, and even offer them after build. I just love your artistic stuff on this site, couldn't get enough.
Thank you
Is there a plan with measurements for this? Great work!
Thanks for the kind words 😊 I could get some measurements for you if you like? I came up with the design myself. The most important thing to bare in mind is the scale length (Nut to bridge this is a 23inch scale. Leave yourself enough room for a headstock and body and you can't go wrong
@@afterlifeguitars how wide is the nut and bridge also what is total length of guitar and width and length of fret board. Thanks for quick reply again great craftsmanship.
No problem, give me a day to get that info as I'm not home at the moment.
@@afterlifeguitars thank you take your time!
@mikepalmieri3375 Guitar length is 32 inches, width is 4 and a half inches, Thickness is 1 and a quarter inches. The fretboard I measured in mm for more accuracy. Fretboard length is 430mm, Width is 70mm, Thickness is 5mm The Nut length is 110mm thickness is 5mm height is 10mm The bridge is just a standard six string size 80mm, 40mm, 2mm
Very nice!
Thank you so much 😊
Really great stuff, man. Learning a lot from your builds. Thank you so much!
Thankyou so much, that means a lot to me. I tend not to make them tutorials as I'm still learning about guitar building really. Getting better every day! Thanks for the support
It is looking good mate, And, yep def put the ducks on. Great work folks. ;D
Aww thank you 🥰 so much I'm glad you're enjoying the episodes miss you. Guess what? We getting rusty tomorrow yayyyyyyyy yayayayayayayyyyyyyy can't wait to introduce him to Bear. Gonna get it on camera and make a video 😆 Xx
how do you reach frets 20, 21, 22?
You don't mate the client does...you know the one who asked for it to be customized like that.
I love what you've done there the blend and the grain matches so well. So proud 😊 Xx 👏
Thanks so much 😊 it was a lot of fun to
I just love this wood can't wait until u have finished this one.
I feel a Ben Crowe one day build....on day sixteen coming on though 🤣😁
@@afterlifeguitars 🤣😂 I can to
Brilliant first scratch build there, Are you staining it at all? I look forward to seeing what you do next ;D
This one isn't stained Mom are you on about the peacock one? Have you seen that yet? It looks great the crown 👑 wasn't coming through the dirt and grime and the white filler stuff. After sanding that off it became very dull and not very transparent. So I put glitter around. Thinking about outlining the body in gold what do you think 🤔
Lovely colours there that both match the peacock. I would have perhaps used both the blue and green to set the peacock off. So blue at the top to set off the green body of the bird then blended into the green for the bottom half to set the tail off. However the green is nice and its hard to tell on camera anyway as to what is the best, Keep up the brilliant work ;D
Thank you! Cheers! Xx
I enjoyed watching u build this one always do alot of man hours went into this and I'm so very proud of how it has turned out for u and can't wait for the next one ❤🎉
Thank you it was such a fun project to work on. I'll definitely build with bubinga again 🤩🤘
U gonna build with bubinga are u mad 😂 I remember all the moaning lol
Lmao 🤣 yeah that's true
What is the shielding paint called? I thought a special coating was used! Thank you 🤓
Hi thanks for your comment and for watching the video. I bought the paint from crimson and it's called shielding paint. It's got stuff in it to block outside interference.
Thanks for watching 🤩🤘
Nice. Cool use of scrim tape. I’ll tuck that one behind my ear
lol thanks man
Hope you enjoy the episode and thank you for your support 🤩🤘
Interesting idea for the fret dots.
Cheers mate well it's built on a bit of a budget. I don't have any other material and it also makes the fretboard detachable.
@@afterlifeguitars It's the fact that it's detachable that makes me wonder why it's not more common.
Yeah true. I think on a standard guitar you may slip into the screw slot when bending notes unless you use a flat head screw and put it at a vertical position to the fret dot. I wanted to make my own using a plastic straw and resin however we're out of that until a few weeks time
Absolutely awesome can no wait until it is finished 😍
You and me both! 🤩🤘😗 Xx
You and me both! Xx
very very good sorting the broken neck. Where would we be without wood? pun intended ha ha. ;D
Looks awesome Ur doing an awesome job.
We're getting there slowly babe
I understand this is a great unique model, but I would really like for a complete model of it it be played in a video just to hear how good it sounds. Great work none the less, keep it up
It needs a proper set up which I'll do in the new year. I'm glad you liked the design. It didn't turn out how I wanted it to but that's how things go sometimes
With the glue, the pickup ring and the neck in place, there'll be no sign of that break.
Yeah my immediate reaction was it's ruined but I got lucky with the fix
the last 'facet' is just do what feels right ;) looks great nice work!
Thankyou ☺️🤟
This looks like a pretty great first neck to me! I couldn’t see on the vid, what’s the problem with the dots?
It's the 17th fret that's a bit off. And 1 of the 12th fret dots
Thank you though, I'm proud of it
I love how you can laugh at yourself, and then ho on to fi d a solution to your mistakes. Most people just get frustrated and give up. Brilliant Ryan. Xx
Cheers Gemma 🙌 yes woodworking teaches Patience. Not always easy to find a solution when stressed out. But so far so good 🤘
The binding is a really nice touch, well done!👍
@tornelliguitars Thanks Gio 🙌
