This year The Bedfordale Kazoo Orchestra in Perth, Western Australia, went to the great expense of recording two songs at their musical event this year! The second was for my good friend John Worth (aka Les Vandyke) who had a No 1 hit with this song, that was sung by a fella called Adam Faith way back in 1959. It is given a new lease of life by The Kazoo Orchestra - and it might become a hit ag...

Interview with Geoff Stephens - Part One
This is FAB! I was 11 years old . Seems like yesterday . Could have done without Bruce butting in on “poor me” much as l love him anyone remember Adam s non hit “green finger “ ? So funny !
Columbia label and Jerry Lordan Tremendous!
Old Bruce would have tried anything to increase his profile, Adam faith was probably the most successful pop artist in the UK when this was broadcast or join biggest with cliff richard. Whereas Bruce was on TV for 5 minutes comparing a show once a week for a season of the show.
SorryI found this painful!🇬🇧 Glad music has moved on successfully
Thousand of guitarists the world over. including me, have been trying to reproduce hank's sound from the early 60s Shadows records. Some of us have got quite close but no cigar, despite 60 years of effort and no small expense. Only one has got it absolutely spot on - and that's Gary - with some technical help from Paul Rossiter in Australia.
Agreed Nigel. The late Paul Rossiter was a genius in electronics, and his TVS amp was a masterpiece. With that, and the genius of Gary's playing, it would be difficult to find an audio difference between the original Shadows sound and the 'Gary sound'. But I bet you sound great too! I tried Gary's strat once, and couldn't even get my old fingers around the neck (of the guitar that is, not Gary's!!)
@@mikeperth1136 Many thanks Mike for your reply. I did not realise that sadly, Paul had passed on. For me, his videos with Gary were riveting and incredibly detailed and informative. And I agree that even in a sort of "blind taste" comparison between Gary's Apache etc. I could not tell which was which. I have an original 62 slab board Stratocaster which I have owned since 1965 and I have had quite a few comments now from "Shadows" guitarists about how close it comes to the original Marvin sound but of course the guitar is only one part of the chain.
Thanks for that info Nigel. I lived in Perth when I did the chats with Gary & Hank, but I now live in Norfolk, UK. Gary used to play for a group of my friends in my garden when I lived in WA - there are a number of videos of the events over the years - here's a link to one of them: ruclips.net/video/VV0595FTUVk/видео.html
@@mikeperth1136 Thanks very much Mike, I shall look at the videos. I am also in the Uk, if I haven't mentioned it, and, as you are probably aware, there are lots of Shadows clubs here. I have been a member of about 6 since 2009 and still go to one of them down here in Devon. Unfortunately, of course, we are mainly but not exclusively, a lot of old men. But we can still manage to belt out the tunes, notwithstanding!.

My mum took my sister and me to see Adam at a cinema in Cheam. We never heard a note because of the screaming! But he was tiny, even with heels on. They gave me a cork board for my bedroom wall and i covered it with pictures of Adam. Didn’t realise i was gay yet!
Geoff wrote a _Kind of Hush_ which the highly successful American due the Carpenters recorded and also named one of their albums after. It is amazing that some unassuming, unknown English guys were behind US music. Rod Temperton wrote many of the top US disco songs including _Thriller,_ and others for Micheal Jackson and also a song or two for Karen Carpenter and _Always and Forever_ by Luther Van Dross. Many thought he was a black American - he had a north of England accent from rural Lincolnshire, and was very white.
This is truly fascinating and the background information and coming to Perth, Australia and just happens to be the same city that Hank Marvin had moved to a few years earlier.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, Gary is now very much part of the Gypsy Jazz Quartet, having worked for Hank for some 20 years now.
I went and watched them in Sydney only a few months later, November '15 in fact, in Sydney The Basement. Gary was so laser focused on the rhythm and drove the band on, like he knew what his job was and for Hank to do the more fancy stuff. I was struck by his unselfishness and committed attitude. I know a good and fully dedicated musician when I see one. But as a group, they are really tight and I credit Gary a lot for that.
@@D800Lover I'll pass your kind comments on to Gary - thank you.
Nice music
This was the theme tune for the news on Border TV in the 60’s……Carlisle rocked back then 😂🫡🇬🇧🏴🏴
I still miss Amos Avaczyk-Daley .
Gary's playing and sound is great on P Walkways. Any idea of the amp/overdrive used (remarkable for a Strat)?
Thanks for your query Ernie. I contacted Adam and he very kindly sent the following information: Hi mike not a problem gary used his Alessis echo for the echo and for the over drive I think it was a Boss Adaptive overdrive Distortion DA-2 pedal - it was an orange red type I shall see if I can get you link. We have also used Boss metal zone also to get that Gary Moore sound. Sorry that I could not attach Adam's photo of the Boss DA-2 to this reply. Hope This helps. Best regards, Mike
@@mikeperth1136 Thanks very much Mike. I have just completed a re-learn of Petite Fluer based upon Gary's fine example.
I thought I was the only one who remembers Geoff Stevens. Whenever I mentioned him to other popular music fans I get a blank look. I rate as remarkable just for ' The Crying Game'.
Thank you Lawrence. I agree with you that The Crying Game was a superb song that deserved to get very much higher in the UK charts than Number 5. Geoff was a real gentleman too, and his collaboration with Les Reed was truly wonderous. The late Big Jim Sullivan was the guitarist on the single, as I'm sure you know - a great session musician. I believe Dave Berry now runs an antique business in deepest Derbyshire. Thank you for taking the trouble to comment, Best wishes, Mike
Just read Vic Flicks book, I you have been in a band you will completely get it.
Excellent
What great talent gary has,and a hypnotic voice to go with it Lol 🎶🎸
Great interview, after he was in Fox I didn't know anything about what he was up to, I was a great fan of The Herd, I must have been about 13 or 14 when From the Underworld came out. My friend and I went to see them in St Thomas's Hall Brentwood Essex which was very local to me, my friend was totally into Peter but Gary was my 1st love (still get butterflies in my tummy when I think of him) silly woman haha you'd think I'd know better at my age , well you never forget your 1st love do you So lovely to know that he has led a very varied career. Give my love and best wishes to him please ❤❤❤
Many thanks Lesley. I have copied your message to Gary, and if I get a response I’ll post it here to you. I am now in UK, Gary remains in Perth as a part Of Hank Marvin’s Gypsy Jazz Quartet. Very best wishes, Mike
@@mikeperth1136 Thank you Mike, oh boy is my face reddening up lol, it will be nice for him to know that he made my teenage years so happy listening to The Herds music oh and for having the mother of all crushes on him 🤣😂🤣 take care of yourself

Apache con il ventilatore ?🤪
NIVRAM the opposite of MARVIN. One marvellous piece of jazz musical played by Hank rest of the Shadows. Yes I followed the tune from 1961 album
Gary is the closest you’ll ever hear, to sound like Hank..🎸🎸
If anyone wants a great read, get hold of Vic’s autobiography. It’s brilliantly written, informative and hilarious into the bargain. He’s a brilliant musician.

Sad to think that John Barry,Adam Faith and good old Bruce are no longer around.
The early hits of Adam Faith were by today’s standards mediocre. However, Adam Faith back in 1960, represented something new, and although the quality of his singing left a lot to be desired, indeed his nasal tones and his occasional flat notes, were over overlooked because his hit songs from 1960 to 1963 were tuneful and easy to listen to. With the rise of the Beatles and other Mersey groups, Adam Faith was wise enough to change the type of songs he had been recording, and introduce a more dynamic dimension. His two top 20 hits, ‘The First Time’ and ‘We are in love,’ were in my humble view his best ever recordings. But Adam, before he went into acting, recorded a ballad ‘Message to Martha’ which also reached the top 20. Adam Faith was a ‘show biz survivor’ as he realised that acting was the next logical step as he couldn’t go on forever being a pop hero.
Agreed - it's all a matter of 'right place, right time'. Go to my interview with Johnny Worth (Les Vandyke) to hear more about Adam's first number ones. Regards, Mike
I loved Adam in my youth I'm now 74 I keep playing message to Martha it's lovey he wernt a healthy lad I heard he died from kidney or heart failure x
Two great musicians , we are lucky to have PERTH.🎸🎸🎼👍👏👏👏

Should hire an orchestra and done those herd hits lol , great listening .
The 3 hits they had in the uk were very good and I enjoyed them a lot then and now .
Did he ever play with frampton after the herd ,I know Andy bown did .
Not that I'm aware of Raymond, but I will ask him the next time we speak.
@@mikeperth1136 many thanks , enjoyed the chat although I was a bit late to the party lol ,
I thought that this should only once again make me imagine just how incomprehensible to me it is that a personality cult's allure is so poweful, if properly promoted, that it can hide the worshipped object's vastly inferior talent from an audience's eyes and ears, even when it's on display for all to see, not hidden in a studio, within a record, and loaned its talent by the unknown studio enginneers; and, that again, how resentful I'd become if I were one of the unapplauded musician's, creating the sound, yet was still invisible to everybody, my music being lower than the star's monotone, no matter how loudly I played; especially if I were in the pits, playing a violin. But then, Forsyth appeared, with his moves, his effortless comic demeanour, and more pleasant voice, and it was all re-emphasised for me. This adoration of youth for youth's sake,, even if whatever potential merits it may have unseen by me are visible to others, is so strong that when Brucie and Sammy Davis Jr. staged that incredible gun-twirling and dacing act together, years later, I think too, at the London Palladium, not a single female shriek was heard. Is it because they are imagining having sex with the youth, is that all that's necessary ?
Simply wonderful ! As a dedicated Shadows fan and disciple for 60 years I love the sound of this pair. Same Fiesta red strats too !!! Amazing music .
One wonders why the horn players bothered turning up.
Agreed Tony! But they were part of the 7 and without them being there they'd only be the JB 4 and without John Barry Prendergast himself! Bet their mic didn't even have a lead attached! Regards, Mike
@@mikeperth1136 I can’t process the fact that Adam was only 19/20 in this video, and yet I still see him through the eyes of a 9 year old fan, such that he still looks older than me!
I was 14 at the time and Adam was one of our 'idols', along with The Shadows and Dusty. Many years later, we became very close friends with John Worsley (aka Johnny Worth and Les Vandyke) who wrote all the early Adam No1's, along with hits for many other artists like Eden Kane. He died around 18 months ago in Consett. Regrettably never saw Adam 'live'.
@@mikeperth1136 That’s fascinating. I had a single by Lance Fortune (Be Mine) which I think was another Vandyke song
Hi Tony. 'Be Mine' wasn't one of John's compositions - I believe it was written by the late Trevor Peacock, of 'No, No, No, No - Yes' fame in The Vicar Of Dibley. Trevor wrote quite a number of very successful songs. Sadly, by the time I got round to asking for an interview,= he had advancing Alzheimer's, so it never happened.
I could listen to these boys all day. Reminds me of 1963 when I started playing these strat instrumentals thanks to Hank. I hope these boys keep on forever. Thank you Adam and Gary.
I'll pass that on Norman - thank you, Mike
Adam faith I grew up with him as well .he made some good songs. I love the next bit that's coming up .When he is singing with Bruce Forsyth. They were so FUNNY. Dawne

Thanks Ken. I'm sure you're right. Decca did release it as a single, Catalogue number F,11809, released in 1964. While I'm talking of dates, I was horrified to realise that the interview I did is now 14 years old! Still keep up with Colin by email. Thnaks again, Mike
