I'm from South African so-called Townships but I heard Randy Weston when I managed to emigrate to Europe in the late 1990s.

I may be wrong but I never heard Randy playing fast piano as a demonstration of his skill. He always play to augment what other musicians are doing in his band.

Wow, what an interview!!! I met Dr Randy Weston in Cork Jazz Festival, in Ireland and I had a chance to talk to him because master of ceremonies for the whole festival. I saw that he was a black or Afro-American and i became excited because I'm black and always wanted to know about black music in America. He said to me: " Tell people that all music comes from AFRICA." I went on to discover that classical music maestros or geniuses like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven etc were all BLACKS called MOORS at the time. As a young African saxophonist in that festival, that year, I felt that I have met a GREAT black American philosopher that changed my mind about music and what is called JAZZ. It was like I was talking to my Ancestor about what i should do in music as a saxophonist interested in Jazz. I didn't know that a piano is classified as a percussion instrument, he told me that it is and I heard it in his playing and it sounded AFRICAN with all it RHYTHMS. He absolutely opened my mind about music. I subsequently did more research about him and I recently bought his Autobiography. AMAZING FANTASTIC musician and African music HISTORIAN!!! I'm not great as a saxophonist but I respect Jazz and I love Africa.

This made my tears appear. I had lesson from The Master from 2002 until he past away, it unsettled me for more then ten years. I never had such a bond with any music educator ever as I had with Sir Calvin Jones, The Master❤

I played in the trumpet section with Tom in junior high school. We all knew he was destined to play professionally, but he was super low key about being so much better than everyone else. He and I, with two other guys, played a piece for trumpet quartet in the Solo & Ensemble Festival. Tom's dad came in to work with us a few times and in the end we crushed it at festival. Sure, it was 8th grade, but... yeah, I played with Tom Williams!

Yes He was! I first met Mr. Jones in about 70-71 when I was in the DC's All City Wide DC Band and then when he taught at a music summer school at Bertie Backus Jr. High. He was also a upright bassist too. Those were two great summers. Our student teacher was a cat named Davy Yarborough and in a classroom around the corner practiced the DC rec band called the Ambassadors.
