Modern jets used compressed air to start. Passenger jets have a smaller engine in the tail called an APU or Auxiliary Power Unit, that generates enough compressed air to start the engine and enough electrical power for the planes needs until the first engine is started. I don't know about current engines, but a while ago when I was flying more, each engine had a hydraulically operated alternator. When 2 engine planes first came out, regulations required both alternators to be working to fly. That was before the days of the APU. Introduction of the fuel mixture into the compressed air from the fans is enough to cause the engine to start. I remember making a mad dash through the San Francisco airport to get to my flight only to find the plane sitting there with the cowling up and parts hanging out. About 45 minutes later a Delta tug brought over the replacement (for an American plane). I was one of only a few passengers that opted to wait for the repair as it was shown as a 2-hour repair. It was already late and I didn't have to work the next day, so I waited.

GE90's are used mainly on the Boeing 777 series of jets. First released in March of 1993 to current. Newer variants exist that increased the power. It is a high efficiency version of a 1970's NASA prototype.
