Your description of every movement...it is just absolutely on point. I was trying to think of the best way to teach my girls the tosses that I've been able to do for 1000 years (I'm kind of a fossil. Lol) but I haven't had to teach tosses in a long time. Got hired as the color guard coach at my son's school....and I'm struggling to teach tosses. I'm going to recommend your videos to my ladies. They will definitely get it with your explanations. Thank you for making my job easier!
@@heatherkearley4975 Thank you so much! I am so glad to hear how helpful it was. Wishing you all the best with your new coaching gig!
Wow! The toss is at 5:00
What if we are doing this but lower down? Like we call it behind the back horizontal and I was told that I am a scooper/sweeper doing the move and I have trouble throwing without my feet lifting at least a little bit. Do you have any recommendations? I’m just starting my second year of colorguard/ a senior now and wanna do this in college perhaps
@@lilybethkuhn9650 Definitely have some tips for you! When it comes to trying to correct the scooper/sweeper pathway, think as if there is a table in front of you that you are trying to sweep over the top of. When it comes to lifting in the feet, there are a few things you can try to help with that. For starters, make sure you’re engaging your core muscles on your release and your catch. When you go into your release, also exhale a big breath. Both of these things will help you with grounding your feet. Something else we do at practice if you’re catching consistently and have a friend who trusts your catches, they can put you in “heel jail”. Essentially they would lay down on the ground behind you and hold your ankles down and in place to help overcome that muscle memory of you wanting to lift your feet on the releases.
@@crystalzaragoza okay thank you so much!
Pls toutorial 🥺 How can i make this 🥺
@@lycienne9689 No prob! I’ve actually got a tutorial here for this toss. You got this! ruclips.net/video/4zpB-R84jBU/видео.htmlsi=y-Zc_4R8cHM-OkA8
What do dance with a flag for?
This was performed on the field before the halftime show started for a fun little routine that some of our alumni band members joined us for!
Brilliantly explained. Thank you for breaking dowm the steps as you did!
You’re very welcome!
Rifle is my favorite piece of equipment in guard
Mine too!
Thats beautiful n would b perfect with an American flag
Thank you! When the team performs this, they actually do use some red, white, and blue performance flags! This is just my practice silk. :)
@@crystalzaragoza yup I know n I know it looks beautiful
Honey, that girls out there tossing flags by the cars again Lol no jkjk
😂😂
@@crystalzaragoza lol! You're clearly a pro to even attempt this lol
@@scorpiocara6798 haha thanks!
You're a great instructor but it would help if you did it about 5 times first so we can see what it is and what it's supposed to look like before you go into instruction
Thanks for the feedback! I’ll keep that in mind for future videos I create.
Nice beautiful

This helped a lot! Before this video I tried the toss and hit the back of my head but now I almost got it haha 😅
Boo for it hitting the back of your head, but yay for the fact that you’ve just about got it! Go you!!!
This helped me a lot! I just started color guard as well! I have a really bad problem of catching it with one hand and it falling into the other, and i dont know how to stop it. I also cant reach the top of the pole the same way i do when i start and i dont know why 😭😭
You can do this!! A couple tips. Think about reaching your left arm further across to the other side of your body than you think you need to in order to get that hand on the pole at the same time as the right hand. Also, to get your left hand high enough on that grab, think about opening your arms wider, which is called “boxing out” your arms. One good way to think about this is as if you’re trying to let your armpits breathe. If you keep your elbows too tucked into your body, it will make the re-grab tougher and will make it harder to grab at the proper spot as well. Hope that helps!
@crystalzaragoza thank you so much! That makes so much sense thank you!
@@AndreaRose-g7x You’re very welcome! Happy practicing!
i swear this toss is impossible😭
This one definitely takes lots of patience, practice, and perseverance. You can do it!!!!! Is there anything in particular you’re struggling with on this toss? Happy to offer up suggestions to help you master this thing!
@@crystalzaragoza the hard part is putting your hand behind your head and then catching it while it's on the side of you
@@allieblue4219 I can definitely understand that! I have a few tips for ya! I would recommend playing around with your hand placement of the right hand that comes up in front when you release and the left hand that goes back. If you’re finding that the flag isn’t quite getting to the left side of your body for the catch, move your right hand a little more to the left when you release. That will help direct it to the right place. Putting the left hand behind your head can definitely be scary early on. My recommendation for this is to actually think about sending that left hand even further across the back of your head than you think you need to. Think about trying to reach your left hand all the way across to the back of your right shoulder in the prep, and that will help ensure that you’re not letting go too early before you get that good 45 angle established. So overall, I would say to play around a bit with the hand placement for both of your hands, but in any case, be sure in your release to let go with both hands at the same time and don’t hold on longer with one hand versus the other. That could definitely lead to some funky things happening with your tosses. I hope this helps!
@@crystalzaragoza thanks you so much
I really enjoyed the video.😊
This is my first overhead toss and im really scared of letting go... any tips? Its specifically the fear of getting hit on the head and getting a serious injury
Yes! I've definitely got some tips for you. This is probably going to sound silly, but when you're first starting out and practicing at home, put on a bike helmet as you work to build up your confidence in those tosses. Also, you can start by releasing the toss and then running backwards away from it, and let the toss fall to the ground many times until you get the hang of the release first. Once you're getting some good height and technique on the release by itself, then you can go into working on adding in the catch with the bike helmet on. For this particular toss, you'll know your rotation is right where it should be when your silk is landing to the right when hitting the ground. If it's not landing there, then you're either under or over rotating, and you will want to make sure you get that proper rotation amount down before trying to add in the catch. The last piece of advice, which is going to be tricky, but try to not let your fear of the toss come through in your release. If you timidly release the toss due to fear, you won't get enough height in the toss, and it increases the chances of it coming down on your head. You want to try and release with confidence so you get the right amount of space between the flag when it's in the air and your head. I hope this helps! This is definitely the perfect toss to try out for your first overhead toss, so you're on the right track. You've got this!!!
@@crystalzaragoza Thank you!! For some reason, the bottom of the flag always comes close to hitting my face as it falls down and lands with the silk on the right. Now I realize that it is because I'm too scared to throw it high thanks to your help.
@@reveluv4everluv You’re welcome! Toss with confidence, and you’ll have it down before you know it! :)
@@crystalzaragozaUpdate: I've got it! And I can do 45's now too! I can sort of do helicopters, but I'm practicing them. This helped a lot!! Thank you!
@@reveluv4everluv Love hearing that! Way to go, and keep up the awesome work!!!
Thank you so much im trying to get into an independent guard and my guard in hs did no dance at all. I love you
Best of luck at auditions!! You got this!
I'd love to know how you created this?
We made this with PVC pipe (although, I would recommend using something lighter than PVC), broomcorn, twine, LOTS of hot glue, and some wood grain contact paper. We cut the PVC to size to just fit over the flag side of the pole and covered the PVC, as well as the flag pole in wood grain contact paper. Also used lots of hot glue to attach bunches of broomcorn to the bottom portion of the PVC pipe and wrapped the broomcorn tightly with twine as well to keep it extra secured. When we placed the flag inside the PVC, we show-folded it so it would open up nicely once the broom was "shucked" off the pole and not get a sail. It was definitely lots of work to create, but was a HUGE hit!
I need so advice my hand has a habit of turning over when I do a pull hit and I have no clue how to stop it
It sounds like you may be holding onto the pole too long before letting it go. Avoid turning your wrist. Instead, think as if you’re pulling your flag to a flat sharply, but let go of the flag before you get to the flat. Work on opening up both of your hands at the same time and opening them nice and big so you make sure all of your fingers let go of the pole at the same time. Let me know if that helps!
Thank you so much I needed this😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
You’re so welcome!!
This is one of the first moves I learned, we call it a carousel though
Cool! It’s always fun to hear about the different names people use for the different moves!
This was my first year in colorguard. I think this routine was wonderful. I was smiling from ear to ear trying to follow along.
Aww. Love hearing that! Hope you have absolutely loved your first year in color guard!!
That ending! 😊👏 What are those spins and that toss called?
😊 It’s called a double fast toss! The spins just by themselves are called double fasts. I have tutorials for both on my channel, but if you’re interested in a breakdown of the spins into the toss, you can find that one here! ruclips.net/video/Hoo96s6_FrI/видео.html

Saya kira itu di masjid
It does kinda look like that, but this was actually filmed in the fieldhouse gym at our school, which just so happens to also have tall ceilings and some big windows!
This is what my sister wanted me to learn in a day-
Oh my! This one definitely takes some practice and usually takes well more than a day to master. Throwing on a bike helmet when you’re first trying it out though isn’t a bad idea to speed through the initial fear factor!
@@crystalzaragoza yep
Thank you I needed this! I am just learning and a pop toss is my homework and I needed a short tutorial!
You’re welcome! Happy practicing!

thx
Where did you get the broom part I love it
Thanks! We actually made them! We made them with PVC pipe (although, I would recommend using something lighter than PVC), broomcorn, twine, and LOTS of hot glue.
Oh! And some wood grain contact paper to put over the PVC pipe.
How many inches are the poles and where did you get them from? I love your videos btw!!!
Thank you so much! The poles in this video are 36” long, but homemade 4ft poles made with PVC and oversized swing flags are also a really fun option for swing flags. BandShoppe is where I got the 36” poles! www.bandshoppe.com/shop/color-guard/color-guard-flags/flag-poles-accessories/aluminum-swing-flag-pole-58110/gold/default.html

@@crystalzaragoza Thank you! We just started winter guard tryouts today and got so many new people. We're getting into competitions for winter guard ^^ I'm excited
@@大間幸吉 So fun!! Winter guard is the best!
thank you so so much!! I started color guard about 2 weeks ago and now I’m starting to learn tosses so this is super helpful! thank youuu!! ❤️🔥
That’s awesome! Welcome to the activity! So happy to hear that this has been helpful! 😊
i’ve been having so much trouble with this:/ i can’t get myself to let go
45 tosses can definitely be a little scary at first. My suggestion - if you have a bike helmet at home, try putting that on first and it will help give you that extra layer of protection and confidence to try releasing it. Once it’s going well with the helmet, try removing and see how it goes!
Same I actually gave myself a concussion with my 45 💀
@@madelynryan8492 Yup, trying to rebuild confidence after a 45-gone-wrong gave me a nasty cut on my eyebrow (luckily no concussion).

This video doesn't get enough attention. Everything was so clean. The video itself had so much work put into it and you can definitely tell. This is so cool!!! Also your guard is huge and i love how may weapons there are
Thank you so much for saying so! We had a ton of fun with it! We actually train our full team on rifle each year and started training everyone on sabre last year too. It’s neat to give everyone a chance with the extra equipment!
Well now I know why I got a pink flag and white pole it’s bc it looked so good with yours lol 😂
Haha. I've had this same setup for as long as I can remember! It's a great combo! I'm glad to hear you also love it. :-)
Gold (not real gold sadly I’m poor) pole purple flag for me. ROYAL COLORS
Mine I got from a marching comp, so it was old show flags, I’ve got a silver pole and a pinkish purple design for the flag
omg tysm this makes it so much easier. I just joined color gaurd a few weeks ago and we are now learning pole hits. they really hurt my hands though lol. Thanks a lot!
You’re so welcome! Glad to hear it helped! Pole hits are a really good one to do while wearing guard gloves if you’ve got ‘em! They can definitely hurt when you’re first starting out, and that extra padding can make all the difference.
