what I like most with francois weigel is that he uses the piano like an orchestra. all the different voices are clearly pronounced. you really can imagine the different instruments . Horowitz did use the piano similar. And you have a clear structure and this work is like a cathedral in front of you.

messiaen did superpose birdsongs which he recorded in nature. I dont personally like the idea and dont find enough logic in his harmonic system. I did listen at salle pleyel in the 80ties to the interpretation of yvonne loriod the wife of messiaen and did not like the turangalia symphony at all but when I listen to this here i do change mind as the great sound and interpretation of the pianist francois weigel changes a lot. I am sure horowitz if he would have been born later would have been interested in this work too but would not have done a better interpretation than this here

An excellent transcription that fully captures the spirit of this famous overture. I do have a few interpretive quibbles. He picks an extremely fast pace (not unlike some famous orchestral interpretations, to be honest). Fortunately, he definitely has the technique and interpretative skills to handle it. A few of the wonderful sonorities in some passages are lost in the blur of 1/8th notes. On the other hand, the wonderful waltz sections are taken at a better pace, but the classic waltz beat is at times overwhelmed by rubato. The restatement of this waltz theme an octave higher is always problematic on the piano, and while he does better than most, I don't think he fully solves this problem. Overall, though, it's one of the best two-hand performances of this concerto available. Bravo !

cet enregistrement des rhapsodies de liszt ne va pas etre oublié. Francois Weigel n' interpréte pas Liszt il est Liszt quand il fais sonner ces oeuvres.

That passage in 13:42 is just so lovely. How I wish Brahms expounded on that 'transient' theme and developed it further. But I guess that's one of the magic of the 1st mvt, you only get to hear it once so that you yearn for that passage everytime in this concerto. ❤️
