Gabrielle's Story: Making online meetings more accessible with Caption.Ed
Wow I am a 66yo man when I was at school my teachers did not even no about dyslexia I left school not being able to read or write at all but was good at maths and with a bit of nepotism long story got a job as a apprentice electrician and through time and a lot of it taught my self to read but not spell l consider myself one of the lucky ones I went on to have my own company and a big one and was lucky to have a secretary I was a good dictator ( really ) hopefully kids are not falling through the net as much to day as in my day there is so much more I could say but still find it to hard to put in a text glad there is help out there now thank god for spellcheck this still took me 30 minutes to write
Our schools should be the same. Start early and allow this idea to grow from childhood to adulthood!
Thank you, thousands of people these days saying "im neurodivergent, I'm autistic" suggests they've diagnosed themselves on the internet and don't understand "neurodiversity" or actual autism diagnosis. It disturbs me because people diagnosed on the autism spectrum sometimes need support from providers and I don't think everyone should just be going around saying "im autistic." Know what I mean? It's like pop psychology - it can make recieving care more difficult for mentally ill people.
Whats this? New content? OOoOoOOoooO Yumyumyumyumyum!
Awesome. Thanks for the explanation. I could see using the term to describe my own or others' unconfirmed or suspected neurodivergence.
In Asia with speech therapist from USA, Hong Kong, and New Zealand and UK, everyone though I am from Singapore
Self-advocacy is key. For many of us who were born long ago, there was no awareness in the UK when we were at school. Once awareness grew it was considered a condition only very active boys could have. Eventually, it was understood that ADHD manifested itself in other ways - such as inattention. Now it's recognised that girls too can have it and that many boys and girls have it for life. Throughout all this not only were many of those affected by ADHD not in the frame, but with no systematic screening, self-advocacy was the only way to be considered for assessment. I am not optimistic that national screening at an early age will happen within the next ten years. Like several other life-limiting conditions, ADHD is a Cinderella condition at the end of the funding queue. Until the current backlog of cases waiting for assessment is significantly reduced - I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation that from making a request of a GP through to the end of titration should take no more than 12 months - the prospects of the NHS being able to undertake national screening seems unrealistic. Until this improves self-advocacy is the only option.
shows that its all a spectrum and that everyone on it is different and may not be diagnosed or seek diagnosis because they dont show stereotypical traits
Nope. It's infantilizing and caters to the neurotypical gaze.
Woah ❤
