Just how every good D&D session should go 😅
How long does it take you - Jacob to set up for each session? And any advice for an aspiring dungeon master?
For session prep, some weeks it might be an hour, and others it might be anywhere from 4-8 hours of prep between sessions (most of this time is due to me often making my own maps or custom creatures) ~ As long as you somewhat flesh out the one or two directions you think the players are most likely going to take, you'll be fine most of the time. As for when players throw you through a loop (and they will) - as long as you have an understanding of your setting and where the narrative is progressing the power of "yes and" truly comes into play, let your players guide moments like that, its often those moments where the players take charge that lead to the most narrative development. Pre-campaign I did a lot of prep to create the world/setting and the possible events that might take place, my biggest advice is to not overprepare, players will always write more of the story as they play then a DM ever can during preparing a campaign.
