LOL!!! I was a teen in 1978 in fact I graduated from High School in May 1978. When I graduated the floods had stopped and the Southern Arizona summer was almost here. Yes, this is outside of Phoenix, Arizona in the metro area. A year later the winter of 1979 (Jan - April or there abouts) saw another flood only worse than the year before. To everyone's chagrin, a year later the floods returned for a third year in a row. Now I'm saying floods, they weren't any kind of simple flooding of the dry Salt River no Climatologist said these floods were 100, 500, and 100-year floods in a period of three years. Arizona State University built a golf course in the dry riverbed that never floods two years in a row only to watch it wash away. Bridges had their trusses lose their base and start to sink. The trusses were not built on bedrock like they were supposed to but instead on hard packed sand that was washed away in the floods. Bridges designed to take 100,000 cubic feet per minute of water (CFM) were withstanding 130,000 - 150,000 CFM for weeks at a time. I understand the storms and cold in Iowa during that winter, and having served in the Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas I understand the kind of weather that can come through and I'm not belittling anyone who died or injured but you want a wild set of years, look at the State of Arizona from 1978 - 1980 and find a story that over 40 years later I still wonder when it might happen again since I still live in the metro Phoenix area.

I've seen the picture of Sampson's house before. Amazingly the entire first floor was covered with a drift. My family was snowed out of our house. We spent 2 or 3 days in Gibson with a couple that lived near our hardware store. I walked from Gibson to my house near Thornburg to check on the house. I rode a 3-wheel ATV back to Gibson on top of snow drifts. I remember seeing one drift that had been cleared on my gravel road. That drift was higher than the cab of a tractor. Thank you for the reminders of this wild storm.
