I use a pair of closed scissors 👌
Or pilush the needle in, thread it, push the needle out of the opposite side, and leave the thread running through the middle. If its too long and comes out the other side with the needle, pull the threads *slightly*, cut them almost flush with the padded part, and then let go, pulling gently on the side the threads came from to make sure its inside the padded part.
