    This story goes back further than that ...A strong percentage of Appalachia were from one violent region on the Brittish Scotish border where there was little law enforcement. So they often took the law into their own hands. And there were the Scotch Irish as well ... who were widely know for not being civil minded ...this violent heritage immigrated and became rooted in the new world ...this Libertarian culture still survives today.

    I have this blood in me. A fellow I worked with years ago loaned me a book he had and I read it and about halfway through there was a picture of my great grandmother. It was spooky because I remember seeing her picture in the family album. I must have that blood because years ago I got the urge to distill my own liquor. I got pretty good at it, but I will tell you that it is a lot of work. Anybody that tells you that there is nothing to it doesn’t know what they are talking about.

      At the 2:40 mark, the historian interviewed very clearly lays out Devil Anse leaving the war and clearly says he was considered a deserter. At around the 3:20 mark, the historian also clearly states that Acsa Harmon McCoy was tracked down and killed by the Wildcats. I'm not really sure what truth you think isn't being told. As those two points you took issue with are very clearly stated within the first 5 minutes of the video.

    These very interesting but some would say distasteful episodes in American history should be discussed. Not to lay blame or guilt but just to give us a deeper understanding of who we are and why, for example americans value highly the right to own a firearm and be able to defend your home. I think as a society we are mature enough to look back on these chapters without getting uselessly emotional about it.

    I was born in West Virginia. My dad's side all grew up there. In 1980, my dad took us away from there. I grew up in Arkansas but spent summers with my grandparents in their little town in West Virginia. I have fond memories of riding around that town on our bikes with my cousins. The last time I was in West Virginia it was for a funeral. Most of the family I have there is gone. West Virginia is literally a dying state for me.

    I dont appreciate that you say being illetrate in thst day (90 percent of people were all over the country) or being pregnant or barefoot or as impled poor are negative! Those arent negative things. Being hardworking settling where you had to make what you had as tgere were no stores to buy shoes and reproducing and thriving! Those are positive things! Things that settled and made this country! Brave strong people.

    • @RecordWestVirginia
      @RecordWestVirginia 6 месяцев назад

      We never said those things, those were the things the New York papers wrote about the people here when covering the feud. Stereotypes that still persist today. Stereotypes there were also untrue then and untrue now. Nearly all of the the people involved in the feud had shoes as did most people in the area at the time and Devil Anse was highly literate, also you're way off when you say 90% of the people in the country were illiterate in the time of the feud. The literacy rate in the 1870s was about 80% and that was also about what the literacy rate in southern WV was at the time as well. Meaning only around 20% of the population was illiterate then. We were not behind, despite the way the New York how the New York papers covering the event tried to portray us.

      His real name was William Anderson Hatfield.. But he went by Anderson and was called Anse for short. The exact origin of the nickname "Devil Anse" is not known as there are several likely stories however, the most widely accepted is that it was given to him during his time fighting for the confederacy in the Civil War.

    I just found my biological fathers family last year. Sadly he and my two siblings have passed so I cannot ask them My aunt told me that we are related to the Hatfields in some way. I teach high school history and actually had a debate with my students who were saying the Hatfields are no better than the street gangs. An eye for an eye. Smart kids. Now three years later I find out I am related. My dads family lives in upstate Wisconsing, Michigan area. I see online some Hatfields did live there in MIN. But I lost the link and now cannot find it. The rabbit hole was very deep that day. Can you point me in the right direction? Thank you
