Dave Dudley is the singer who put Six Days on the map. A lot of people thought Dave got rich off the song. However nothing could be further from the truth. Six Days on The Road was written by Earl Green & Carl Montgomery. The song was initially sang by a dude named Paul Davis. Davis’ version of the song went nowhere real fast until it was offered to the leader of a band called The Dave Dudley Trio. Dave Dudley struck Gold and the tune went to the top of the charts in multiple countries. A million unit seller which reaped millions of dollars for the original writers Green & Montgomery, but without writing or publishing credits Dave Dudley was paid a flat rate to cut the song, The only way Dave could see any money from the song was to tour. And tour he did. Dave Dudley played one nighters and variety shows from Boston to Saint Lou, Seattle to Miami and every gin joint in between, He didn’t get rich but between his touring and the albums he did cut he was able to carve out quite a niche for himself . Often considered the Godfather of Truck Driving music, he was able to provide a comfortable life for himself and his family. At one time he owned his own little club in the middle of the woods and would perform there often. What a true American success story. Dave Dudley died on December 22,2003 of a massive heart attack in his home state of Wisconsin.
