Red-shouldered Hawk eating a Vole
In this video, you will see a Red-shouldered Hawk snacking on a Vole that it just caught before I was able to get my camera set up. If you watch the video entire, you will see the hawk: eating, cleaning its talons, fluffing its feathers, calling out, and finally flying off with it's new prized possession!

    I have a 1949 Model 12 Skeet with a Cutts and a buddy has a Browining A-5 with Cutts. We shoot Skeet every week. I shoot reloads, he shoot's factory rounds. Never any hint of a problem. It's not about plastic shells and wads blowing it off the barrel. Has to be a stress fracture or something particular to the installation or this shotgun barrel. My 2 cents.

    Hey Missouri, terribly sorry that happened to you! Beginning of last season, I noticed the sets grew at the front of the choke had come loose on my my 1958 A5 12 gauge. I Felt darn glad that I caught it before it started to fall. It would not have had to come much more loose to have a bad out come. Sense Plastic wadding replaced paper about 45 years ago my dad shot them for 30 years and I have done so with the same gun for about 20. For sure quality of plastic wad could have change in recent years [I seen some odd Ball stuff] Anybody else had a screw cause a problem?

  • @dennismeyer3425
    @dennismeyer3425 2 года назад

    The Cutts was installed incorrectly. There was too much metal taken off of the barrel to mount the ring. The barrel ring for a Cutts came in multiple sizes. The barrel is cut down to allow the ring to fit, or sometimes the ring was cut. You should be able to go to a gunsmith and mount another Cutts done properly.

  • @dennismeyer3425
    @dennismeyer3425 2 года назад

    I have quite a few Cutts comps, I reload, and I do quite a bit of pattern testing. Don't use the extra full choke with modern wads. Paper wads can deform through the choke, plastic have a much harder time with it. In 12GA the wad OD is 0.70 to 0.730. The extra long range is 0.68. The wads may catch. Full choke just matches the wads. Some wads have 8 petals for quick pattern expansion, like Lightning wads. The fingers on these separate from the shot within the Cutts. Then when they go through the choke they mess up the pattern, worse with a tight choke. Don't consider steel except with a spreader tube. With steel shot the wad is supposed to keep the shot from touching the barrel or choke. When the wad / shot is inside the Cutts there will be a slight expansion of the shot column. Then suddenly confining it in the choke probably would tear up the choke. The nice thing with Cutts is they throw a very good pattern. You can get additional patter control with wad selection. Wear lots of ear protection.

    It looks like there's a machinining mark there where the end was turned down to fit the bore of the compensator.. In which case there's a weak point . And if the gun was dropped or just tapped over time could have started a small stress fracture which expanded til the point of breakage. You can send the barrel to a gunsmith and have it squared up and tapped/reamed for a nice screw in choke ... Depending upon the thickness of the metal .

    Think they offered a Mohawk model in addition to the Apache with a different color stock. I got to shoot a friends Nylon 66 at a NYC range (West Side Pistol and Rifle) in the early 1980's. A slick rifle that looked like something outta Star Wars. The gun was accurate and stayed amazingly clean after several hundred rounds. He offered it for sale for $100 and I shoulda bought it. Scoping this rifle is easy and really brings out it's potential. It's similar to the Browning .22 auto in magazine feeding and takes some getting used to. A fun gun for sure, nice video.

    Bending likely is not your problem. Keep in mind the cutts is wider than the barrel, so having the bead on the cutts instead of the barrel can tend to make the shotgun pattern low. So, one of the things they did was to braze the compensator on, and then thread a bar the same size as the brazed on portion of the cutts and bend the Cutts down. It sounds horrible, but one really couldn't tell without a straight edge. Also, I heard about guys "fine tuning" this with the crook of a tree on the trap field. When you think about things like that you wonder how the braze weld held on as long as it did.

  • @j.c.delich5520
    @j.c.delich5520 4 года назад

    I believe the original procedure to install a Cutts was to turn down the barrel with a lathe and then braze or silver solder the Cutts to the turned-down portion of the barrel. Well the part of the barrel that had thinned walls was never supposed to see shooting pressures without the additional support of the Cutts around the thinned wall. Unfortunately it looks like your braze weld failed after many years and this left that weakened portion of the barrel unsupported and kaboom. That would be my first thought. My next thought would be a barrel obstruction that you didn't notice. By the way the screw that they guy mentions on the Cutts is a set screw to keep the front portion of the cutts threaded to the back portion, it is not a fastener that keeps the compensator on the barrel. The compensator itself would have been braze welded or silver soldered. Thanks for being from Missouri. Clearly it is the best state in the union.

    Spolier alert! my comment will be terse with repeated unseen looking your direction with a countenance of, "have you lost all cognitive thought? I am seriously dubious of your saftey with a pack of gum at this point" Alreight.. You have a Beautiful 72 Browning. You say it came with a compensator. but you are uncertain the manufacturer. ( first look) , really?? I apologize, I am assuming you are capable of reading English and comprehending the collection of letters in order as presented to form words. THAT, I apologize for. My bad everyone.. ok.. bceause., you now. not every firearm.. oh yea that is my second point.. this is an instrument designed for one purpose, tto send a battery of metal from your shoulder to a point directly in front of you, altering the composition of any matter in its path, from cohesive to chaotic desolation. ( I could have said, designed to kill, but not EVERYone hunts, and itIS a sporting gun.. ) anyhow ( another look at you) So, you have a killing device, beautifully carved receiver, that doesn't draw our attention.. It the wonky beer can at the end of your boom stick. and you dont ever READ the engraved name on the beer can attached tothe end of your boomstick. Not ever once since acquiring said broomstick.. .. ( look) ( here's the clue)... IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS ONTHE END OF YOUR BOOM STICK, PERHAPS THAT IS NOT THE IDEAL BOOMSTICK BEST MATED WITH YOUR MILLENNIAL STYLE GUN OWNER mindset. because.. ( looks) um, metal comes out that end... REALLY fast. Enough bullshit. Cutts. by 1975, Cutts not only has been making compensators for over 40 years. they are the definitive manufacturer of firearm compensators. Period. hands down. Seemingly simple designed, ( see the Tommy gun. ) Quality tempered gun steel , often as hard as the barrels themselves, people wanted something for the sporting guns, and cutts answered. While Remington Browning and Weatherby were working out designing in muzzle chokes, incorporating tight shot patterns, yes, but slower second and third shot follow, why? See Newton on equal and opposite.. especially when you make the barking end of the boomstick smaller the loading end. (look again) ( sings. 'pressure') Save that one for the next feedback. moving to the end .. The cutts compensator, for twelve gauge. is a massive thing. when I wrote "beer can" that is an exaggeration, however, mine, is eight inches long. My cutts compensator is six inches long. Thick steel, heave, machine thereads screw it to a even thick stronger ring glides over my barrel.. easy girls, it's just a story. glides snugly on to the barrel, locking in place with a set screw or two. depending how you rock. that external adapter and hte compensator add eight inches to my barrel.. and the beauty of the Cutts, is you're not done. the barking end is threaded too! the comp typically comes with three chokes, which are another three inches long. !! the cutts 12 gauge compensators has twelve e exhausting notches cut vertically on one side of the compensator, then the alternate side ( lets call it up and down) the down side of the compensaor, has the same quantity of gas exhausting notches, however, they are off set form the opposing "up side". Shooters find the offset recoil reduction quite organic, and unquestioning. allowing for fast, follow shots, fsater sight picture on target, and lead to paper than chokes alone. if you had a Cutts, compensator. You would KNOW you had a Cutts Compensator. It a no bullshit old school (grunt grunt) man device once installed, there is never. ever , ANY decisive reason .,I reiterate NONE, reason to remove it. It does what it is designed to do. forever. consistently. no fail. all go. no quit. I took my Savage 97. duck gun 30" barrel. To a skeet /trap indoor outdoor range. meaning, you park the truck, walk into a building, do your lane eyes and ears thing.. set up your waepon, and you are standing nside of a building, shooting out side, wher thee fourth wall of the building once was. you get me? Nothing between me and tree.. I pulled the Doctor out of the scabbard, and the range master looked at the ribbed 30 " barrel, ending in an 8 inch compensator, tipped with a 3 " long fully choke and says to me.. "mister. you can't shoot that thing in here. i don't even know what kind of license to ask your for, but you can't..... Bob? He's got some... I ... .. lI don't .. I thinking ZSU.. , Bob. " " Sir.. uh what do you intend to send down range with your 'platform' today?" not one exaggeration. hand to God, exactly how it went down... I squinted my eyes and said.. " don't suppose your familiar with... 'pheasant load'?" Cutts Compensators.. old metal, chunky. kick ass. get some.

      I just acquired a Browning A5 12 with a cutts and a 705 choke on it. Looking at the gap between the barrel cut off and the compensator and then the choke, I can see where a plastic cup could expand incorrectly and lodge in there. resulting in catastrophic failure. That's why I'm here, doing due diligence.

    A suggestion about your lighting for your videos. The windows behind you are providing more light than your ceiling lights in the basement. This causes your video camera to adjust the aperture to compensate for the bright window light in the background. This causes your image and what you are holding to be a "silhouette" and has no detail. You could either cover the windows with cardboard to block the bright backlighting situation, or you could reverse where you are standing to the opposite side of the table, and put the camera on the window side of the table. A third option would be to make your video after the sun sets and make your video the same way you made this one. It was very difficult to see what you were doing in this video. Good content, and good explanation of your idea and procedures. Thanks for posting.
